Why didn't we take Shea Patterson in 2016?
I'm confused by something. If M was Shea's dream school, and he was excited by his 2016 offer, why didn't he end up here in the first place? Was it that Ole Miss hired his brother? Was it that Harbaugh & staff cooled on him? Wondering if anyone knows.
UPDATE: Some commenters saying "Well of course he was bought by Ole Miss." That may very well be, but I don't assume corruption from a kid that Michigan is reportedly interested in bringing on as a transfer.

Michigan really liked Peters, but they flat-out stopped recruiting Patterson. It wasn't a situation like this year with Tyler Shough, where they tried to keep an iron in the fire.

I'm going to try to put this delicately, based on the stuff I heard at the time.
Michigan offered a scholarship but wasn't willing to, um, roll out the red carpet for Patterson like some other schools.
December 2nd, 2017 at 7:34 PM ^
But we would take him now after he (allegedly) acted like that?
What changed?

He made sure the wire transfer was complete, now he can focus on winning.

I think it was deemed a lost cause at the time.
If you stopped recruiting any kid who ever had rumors swirling around him, you might as well get out of coaching college football.

That certainly helped us make the decision this year, but we would have taken him from the get go.

is that he and his family aren't expecting anything extra now. Instead of being a HS student, he's now one year away from the NFL if things go his way. Changes your priorities.

I know that there's a lot of snark about how *obviously* Patterson was on the take, but I wasn't sure if there were facts behind it or not.
December 2nd, 2017 at 7:39 PM ^
I don't have any facts, but I did hear those rumors a few years ago. It's not something that just popped up since the Ole Miss thing blew up.

I don't know if Michigan would ONLY be interested if he's eligible in 2018, but that certainly makes things more enticing. Michigan's in sort of a precarious position for 2018 with only one guy who has taken any snaps, and even that guy only had a few games under his belt. I think if his career would extend through 2020, that would certainly be more threatening to Peters, McCaffrey, and the like.

Only the coaches really know what they have in Peters and McCaffrey. You'd be trading a known quantity (Patterson) for a half-known (Peters) or an unknown (McCaffrey) if either one were to leave.

Harbaugh is interested in either scenario. Michigan would have taken him at the time if they would have been a serious contender for him. They weren't. But they were for other IMG players as well the schools playing them (obviously).
I agree with you though. If he is eligible, it becomes much more likely that he ends up here as opposed to sitting. However, I would not be surprised either way because Patterson is probably looking at the shortened college career as one he is going to have to max out in order to end up in a position to be drafted since at this point he would only have his Ole Miss association for the resume so to speak.

I have a recruiting update from June 2014 that discusses the offer to Patterson, so that was indeed during Hoke's tenure.

He also visited Michigan for the Notre Dame game in 2013.
