OT(ish): Les Miles (a Michigan Man) is current fan favorite for Tennessee job
As a Wolverine (and Vols) fan living in Knoxville.....I can tell you that there seems to be growing momentum among fans here for a Mad Hatter hire. This coaching search has been a complete debacle, but I think a Les Miles hire would ease fan apprehension here. However, there is little faith that the Administration will do the right thing and give him an offer. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. With Miles' resume, it seems like a no brainer to many of us. Will he coach here for 10-15 years? No, beccuse of his age. But, he can coach here for 4-6 years and get the program stablilized. He is a proven winner and a proven recruiter in the SEC. He would bring instant credability to a flailing program. Many of us in Big Orange country want to see this former Wolverine get another opportunity in major college football. And yes, he is reportedly very interested in the job.

Les can recruit and has a good resume.
Tennessee will never hire him.

Though UT wouldn't qualify for the rule this year. Their firing of Butch Jones was not inexplicable, unless your only goal for your team is to be Champions of Life (TM)

Apparently Sumlin turned them down for no job at all.

They can give it to that bag of shit Fulmer. Ya bring Fulmer back. Vote us fourth again Fulmer and Tennesee. I love what has happenned to that university as fat ass fulmer cost us the out right NC. Every time I here half a championship since whenever from the scarlett pukes I think of Fulmer. So ya......choke on it Tennesee.

Much as we get mad at Nebraska for this, it was Tennesee and Fulmer that actually made it happen.
They can wander in the wilderness for another decade as far as I'm concerned.

I've said it before: Burn, UT, burn...

I thought they were getting on the Tee Martin bandwagon?
November 30th, 2017 at 6:03 PM ^
It's not so much a bandwagon in Knoxville as it is a cab that picks up and drops off coaches every few blocks, its headlights disabled and only able to navigate by the serene light of the dumpster fire atop Rocky Top.

LOVE that gif. It is the quintessential Brady Hoke. Kind of like a lovable mediocrity who married your sister.
November 30th, 2017 at 11:31 PM ^
Hey don't pick on Brady. Of course he had no business as our head coach, but if Michigan brought him back in some capacity in the future, I would have no problem as I really like the guy.

good pick-up... good grass to chew in Tenn. too.
Always liked him, good recruiter, not that great of a game day coach but many have that issue as well.

Why not just hire Joe Tiller.
Oh, wait......
November 30th, 2017 at 5:58 PM ^
Martin is among the fan favorites too, but is seems the Administration isn't (and won't) consider anyone without head coaching experience. Well, if that is one of the main criteria for a hire, then why not Miles?

I figured if they were desparate enough to call me its a job I won't succeed in.

Yeah, isn't it GREAT?!
November 30th, 2017 at 5:58 PM ^
Is there some reason Tee Martin hasn't at least gotten a long, hard look? I know he doesn't have head coaching experience. but with the way this search has gone, I don't understand why he wasn't the first call Currie placed after the Schiano thing blew up in his face.
November 30th, 2017 at 6:04 PM ^
Some speculate that Peyton is down-playing Martin because he knows if Martin were to have success as a coach he would cement his legacy above Peyton's in Knoxville. This seems ridiculous to me, but also something I could see happening.
On the other hand, USC fans are mixed on Martin. Obviously a great recruiter, but they seem to think he's inconsistent at best as an OC and playcaller. They promoted him to OC because he would have left otherwise and he's their best recruiter by far. He should probably be considered for the UT job, but I don't know that he'd be great.
November 30th, 2017 at 6:25 PM ^
Other than playing for Tennessee, it's a light resume that wouldn't get him a look at that level job anywhere else.

Quite a few Vols fans are pushing for him, but others not so much. One of the negatives I read about him on a Vols blog is that his Wonderlic score was 11. He must have some smarts, though, to be able to accomplish what he has.
December 1st, 2017 at 2:11 PM ^
Not to say he couldn't do it eventually, but the guy's got to succeed at a midlevel - HC job or be successful as a Power 5 OC for at least a couple of seasons before taking a job at a big Power 5 program. He's only been the Offensive Coordinator at USC for one season.

Google search "Peyton" and "Teabag" (preferably from a home computer), and sit back in slack-jawed amazement.
(After you get halfway through the articles, you'll actually sit straight and tighten up your jaw, because ... ewwwwh. But long-story short is that there is ample evidence that Manning is a total douche.)

I agree it sounds unpleasant. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's not
...
wait for it
...
my cup of tea.
(Also, the fog of time on this sorta masks that the underlying event is not at all funny and supports the premise that Manning - to the extent the claims are true - is an awful person.)

As a part-time and completely fair weather Vols fan (family from Tennessee, favorite SEC team I guess), I get that almost all the good candidates have said no or gone elsewhere before they were asked...but does anyone remember Les' last few years at LSU? After all the Saban recruits and momentum ran out? Miles reminds me a lot of Franklin - he's a great recruiter, he's a good personality, a good CEO, but the man doesn't know Xs and Os for shit. THE MAN'S NOT HOT. I'm not sure what Tennessee can realistically achieve at this point, but Les Miles is an 8-4 or 7-5 guy in today's world. He would need excellent coordinators, which at that point, why not just make one of them the head coach??
November 30th, 2017 at 6:04 PM ^
I agree with a lot of that, but at this point...beggers can't be choosers and Les would look like a homerun hire after all of this crap
November 30th, 2017 at 6:09 PM ^
True, and at Les' age maybe they could hire a solid OC with the understanding between all parties that Les is managing the ship and grooming that OC to take over soon. Les is 64, he's probably only coaching for 5ish more years. Maybe get Les and Jake Spavital or Josh Heupel or Will Friend who has a lot of SEC experience as a player and coach.
November 30th, 2017 at 6:14 PM ^
I'm not sure if Les's problem is Xs and Os or not, but he doesn't fill me with confidence at all. He got great players at LSU and mostly squandered them with baaaaad offenses. He has a track record that will salve the wounds of the Tennessee fans who must be looking for tall buildings to jump off of right now, but he'll wind up being just as unimpressive as everyone else they've gotten. Mediocre teams year after year; maybe one promising season where they flirt with a division crown, and then disaster to follow.
But at this point Tennessee might not have a choice. The only way this coaching search could get worse is if it dragged on for another two weeks after this, and/or if they actually started considering Brady Hoke because he is actually there. How epically bad is it? They try to hire someone who is basically unhireable, reach and agreement, and walk away when the entire fanbase rebels in fury. The guy the fans want is a coordinator that USC fans want fired. They're getting pwned by Lane Kiffin.
And they've been turned down by multiple head coaches. Not just at any schools, mind you. They were rejected by the coaches of Duke, Purdue, and NC State.
It's getting late early in Knoxville.
