Not if he has to stop harboring rapists and thugs
That school-sponsored steroid regimen is about to get ramped up hard.
I'm still debating whether Dantonio is a great coach or rode his trusty steed Narduzzi to greatness.
Who knows though on whether Narduzzi would come back when/if Dantonio decides the headwinds are just too great.
That is 12 players off the team and doesn't include the two early departures for the NFL that UMbig11 said were not replaced with transfers or recruits. With a possible 1 more to go (with a whole summer left) that is 15 players that could have played this year that won't.
This is such a strange and fast fall. They could be hurt for this longer than PSU was hurt for their sanctions.
12 players gone. Wow.
Doesn't that make 3 offensive players and 9 defensive players gone? 3 and 9, right?
Sorry, I stand corrected.
That would be 2 and 10. Sounds about right for the coming season.
Very innovative of you. +1
Coupled with the dregs they had to scramble to fill their class with at the end of last year, and they are effectively entering the season with a 65 man roster after a 3-9 season. So they have room for a big recruiting class, and they currently only have 7 commits. If they don't overachieve this year and boost their recruiting it could be a humongous dig out over the next 5 years.
Yeah---that's the cascade thing going on here. Even w/ the new NCAA rules, they have an "opportunity" I guess to have a really big recruiting class the next two years or so.
But since they're in a major rut, it isn't like they'll be scooping up 60 kids in 2 years that are 4 star kids. They'll be likely scraping the bottom of the barrel with the occsional exception of a highly ranked kid that is sold on the "immediate playing time" sales pitch they'll get.
Compare that to, say, a team that just lost a huge senior-laden class & kids going to the NFL on coming off a few double-digit win seasons. That same "opportunity" allows for huge recruiting classes, but in that case the chance is to scoop up 55-60 kids who are relatively strong recruits.
Bottom line is MSU has this "opportuity" of some large recruiting classes at the exact time they're unable to full capitalize off of them. It's going to just be a giant grab-bag of kids & hoping that among the volume of 2-3 star kids, they find a few diamonds in the rough. I know stars aren't everything, but if you think of the average star rating of the entire roster as an average GPA, losing a bunch of kids & then filling those ranks with a ton of 2-3 star kids is really going to drop the average talent level of the team over a year or two.
But honestly, if I were an MSU fan, I'd be pushing for a total program reboot at this point. If the raw talent is going to drop anyway, go for the "character" kids and don't take any risks on high talent head cases. Priortize work ethic and character and at least stabalize the program to a 6-6 or 7-5 level. Then start pushing for your high talent difference makers at DE, QB, WR, RB, DB where one or two top kids can put an extra 1-2 games in the win column to get you to 8-4 or 9-3.
I feel like the process you're describing will take them at least 5 years to get through as they weed out the remaining bad apples and replace them with kids that won't be field ready for another 3 years. Hell, it could be 7 years before they turn it around.
Look how long its taken us to stabilize the OL since the days Carr left.
Dantonio won't make it through 5-7 years of this. And unless they get a Harbaugh type hire, that turnover will push it out further. Dark days ahead for Sparty.
That's the sweetness in all this... this shit is not a 1 year issue. Look at our 2015 class - it's more or less a black hole and if Harbaugh hadn't gone gangbusters in 2016 and 2017 it would have hurt us badly in 2018-2019.
Their 2016 class - the whole top of it - is not at MSU anymore. That's not even what is hitting them now. That's going to wreck their 2019.
If they end up losing Bowers and Cooper they will struggle to win 2 games (I'd be shocked if they dismissed Cooper). Dantonio getting this squad to a bowl game would be his greatest coaching feat yet.
It would be a pretty amazing job. They have no shot in four games and the rest seem like toss-ups.
If they are 2-2 when they plays us, they should be happy.
They went 3-9 last year and have now lost a pretty amazing amount of players from that team...how will they ever get to a bowl game with this squad?
This is actually a very interesting expirement from my point of view. He is widely thought of as a great coach and now we will know what a "great" coach is supposed to do when faced with a major talent drain. Last season and this season put our own 3-9 season in better perspective for me. Great coaches cannot win with subpar talent and no depth.
I agree, I would be shocked if they got to 6 wins. They have guaranteed losses to Michigan, OSU, Penn State and Notre Dame. Assume they beat Bowling Green and WMU (can't always assume, but give them benefit of the doubt here). At 2-4 in those 6 games, they need to find 4 wins among Iowa, @ Minnesota, Indiana, @ Northwestern, Maryland, @ Rutgers. I think 4-8 is the most likely outcome. I could also see a 3-9 repeat or even a drop to 2-10 if things get really bad and players/coaches mail it in.
Does Notre Dame really deserve "guaranteed loss" status here?
Notre Dame combined a lot of bad luck, dumb ass head coaching, and a horrible DC into a much worse record than they should have had last year. S&P had them as 26th (!) in the country last year, and Connelly fully expects a rebound.

After last year I beleive they'll hammer MSU
Yeah as Bodogblog said Notre Dame probably should have finished with an inverted record from the one they actually finished with last year. They were much closer to a top 25 team than they were to teams that missed out on bowl games. They should handle MSU easily.
I would LOVE to see Western beat State. I know that Franklin and Bogan are dudes.
Where does this put them?
Chip Kelly wouldn't like Michigan weather right?
Feel like Chip might wind up at Texas A&M
What if ND finally pulls the plug on their own Kelly?
Assuming some hot seat candidates fall, the openings include:
- Tier 1 (big time, blue bloods): Oklahoma, Notre Dame
- Tier 2 (if the chips, haha, fall just right): Texas A&M, Tennessee, UCLA
- Tier 3 (no way): MSU, Arizona
Oklahoma won't bail on Lincoln Riley after a year. 0% chance that happens.
Could be wrong, but I don't feel like Chip and Notre Dame are a fit.
UCLA feels like a terrific landing spot for Chip. Probably the best, actually. He used to recruit LA all the time at Oregon, would be back on the west coast, offense rules in the Pac-12...lots of things make sense.
Admittedly, I don't know enough about Riley and his relationship with Oklahoma's AD to estimate the likelihood of him sticking, as opposed to being a one-year interim deal.
I do agree that Chip Kelly and Notre Dame is not a very good fit. But I would also say that neither Chip Kelly nor Notre Dame have demonstrated the ability to make sound decisions as far as "fit" of employer/employee choices lately.
unprecedented 3 year deal in excess of a million per year last year. He's essentially the handpicked successor. Everyone in the OU program knew Bob would be gone soon, and they kept Lincoln to take over. According to Bruce Feldman, Stoops would have coached one more year if he didn't think Lincoln Riley was ready to take over.
Although I would love a formidable rival - Michigan State's downfall is a beautiful sight for UM's future. We must be able to dominate in state recruiting and with PSU now rising, its nice to only have two power players in the Big Ten East to worry about.
Lets beat them by 40 this year.
It is nice to have exciting games throughout the season, but now that we have the playoffs -- just win as many as possible and get there for the excitement.
Also if/when OSU is only major threat on our schedule, there will be scenarios in the next 10 years where UM & OSU go into that matchup 11-0 and the loser could still advance to playoffs.
Agreed. A good OSU program is better for Michigan. That rivalry is a major part of Michigan's identity. Its brand, pardon the Brandon-speak. (Though I'm totally OK if they have a couple 5-7 seasons in the near future, too.) A good MSU does nothing for us. Let 'em burn.
Sorry - fuck OSU too. The Rich Rod shit and Hoke crap didn't hurt OSU's brand one bit. I want them to go through the shit we've gone through for a decade too. Our brand will be fine thank you.
THANK YOU! Those are my feelings exactly.
OSU needs to go through a decade of RichRod and Hoke. That week after week helpless feeling of futility on defense, futility on O-Line, stressful games against the likes of Indiana, Akron and UConn, lose to Rutgers, constant blowouts against good teams and the misery over not even being able to qualify for a toilet bowl game.
Let America's worst fan base have to dread Saturdays where the only good feeling is knowing football season is over. It's nothing less than they deserve.
In general, yes.
In the context of now, no. It would be significantly beneficial to U of M football if OSU had 2-3 down years. If it was 5-10, probably not. But we are still behind in recruiting and they dominate national perception of the Big Ten.
He probably just didn't want to visit the white house.
does their APR get crushed? Any idea of what that will look like?
in a post yester (IIRC). It would probably hit them in another year and be a reduction in practice hours (20 to 16).
totally missed that - thats a HUGE deal shocked there isn't more being talked about that
presumably next year when they calculate APR? Or is there a chance for this season that their already decimated team has to practice less?
but it seems it would be a year out or so. I think they would have full practice time this fall but reserve the right to be completely incorrect. I do however know how to spell sh**show correctly.
They are a year or two out from penalties and they will face some.
appreciate the follow-up and answers
