Borges was a horrible OC. Everyone hates their OC because of obvious reasons. Borges' problem was he tried to make Denard into a pro-style QB (never gonna happen), and he stuck too much to the pro-style stuff when he didn't have the personnel to do it. How much of that was Hoke? It wasn't like Nussmeier came in and immediately fixed everything. (RR ran a spread in 08 with pro-style players and we went 3-9.) We all know Hoke hated the spread and insisted on doing certain things.
The bigger issue imho was Darrell Funk. Dude fucked our OL in a huge way. Got worse every year, they couldn't run block, couldn't protect, so at that point it doesn't matter who your OC is.
Borges probably won't be hired by ND. But if he is - it's going to be fascinating to see a west coast pro-style guy like him mesh with Kelly, one of the most spready-spread guys around.
December 18th, 2016 at 6:19 PM ^
On top of that, Brian Kelly does most of the offensive stuff at ND. I'm sure he'll be looking over Borges' shoulder whenever it comes to gameplanning.
December 18th, 2016 at 7:34 PM ^
He should be used to that with Dave Brandon coming in to watch film all the time and probably diagramming plays weekly for Al to run. Perhaps Kelly will view his ability to have his shoulder looked over as a positive in the interview.
Kelly: Al, do you have any experience with others telling you how to do your job better? Potentially even by those who don't know what's going on?
Al: Tons.
Kelly: This is great to hear. Can we have someone show you around South Bend after we finish up here?

Last time I heard him interviewed he was mentioning that he had lost some weight..made a joke equating the amount of weight he had lost to being proportional to throwing patio furniture off a cruise ship.

We also can, I think rightly, speculate that there was a Brandon imperative enforced by Dave Branding on the team, and that all of the offensive woes were not his fault.
In fact, I think with better position coaches, Borges could have been a good OC.
But not a QB coach. Please god, anything but that.
December 18th, 2016 at 10:57 PM ^
What planet am I on? The play calling during his time was probably the worst coaching I have seen in any sport. We know Hoke didn't have a clue or a care about that side of the ball but lets blame funk for the shitty offense? Sure he wasn't able to develop young guys but he also inherited some real talent.
Play calling, play calling, play calling, thats all Borges and it sucked.

Nussmeier was even worse.

I'll see your Borges and Nussmeier, and raise you two Mike DeBord's, a/k/a De"Bored"!

We never saw Al Borges. All we saw was the version whose job description was to be David Brandon's secondary sock puppet. Brandon dictated the approach and probably called half of the plays.
It's not like the next guy under Brandon did any better with the same players.

And then Borges really lit the world on fire at SJSU, so... oh, wait.

The guy who wouldn't throw a bubble screen no matter how wide open it was? The guy who tried to run the zone read while apparently not understanding how to run the zone read?

Borges seemed so-so, probably a little better without Hoke's manball fixation.
December 18th, 2016 at 5:13 PM ^
Is that the University of Notre Dame or Notre Dame High School?
Question is, if offered would he accept it? Could turn out to be a one-year gig like Hoke out in Oregon.

ND probably remembers him for the 4th quarter of UTL1 and most of the '13 game. Easily the high points of his UM tenure.

Descent coordinator, atrocious recruiter especially at the QB position. Brian has outlined the history before. Obviously didn't develop the OL while he was here either. Strictly as a play caller he's average and can put some nice game plans together.
Every other aspect of being an OC (recruiting, development, etc) he is brutal.
