Follow-Up Article Regarding Jim Delany/Big Ten Officiating From Detroit Sports Nation
There was a forum post here yesterday about my recent editorial for Detroit Sports Nation regarding Jim Delany owing an apology to college football. Here is the follow-up article if anyone is interested.
More information has come to light about the crew for the game this past Saturday. One of the officials is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Furthermore, I take a look at one possible solution to the problem regarding compensation for officials.
Thanks for reading.

And this is from one of the more vocal "we got robbed" posters here. If you read the article there's absolutely nothing new in there. He says "new information has come to light" but in reality, everything he posted on his site was posted here by Monday afternoon.
I would love something actually new. But what he posted is old news IMO.

The only thing new is that one of the refs is from Michigan although he is nearly as far away from Ann Arbor as is Columbus.
November 30th, 2016 at 3:45 PM ^
oh come on
now we're parsing how far away the ref from Michigan's home town is from Ann Arbor? Cincinnati is just as far from Columbus and is known to be relatively disinterested in OSU sports, too, you know.

The difference is in Ohio, everyone is a fan of ONE school. In Michigan, people are either fans of Michigan OR Michigan State. As someone living in western Michigan, I can assure you there are as many MSU fans as Michigan fans out here. I'm not saying he should have been allowed to participate, I don't think he should have. But the assumed bias of an Ohio official is a lot more inherent then an Michigan official, which could go one of two ways, and if he is an MSU fan, that actually hurts us...
November 30th, 2016 at 5:46 PM ^
that there were more Michigan State fans in West Michigan...but maybe that was because of the dark years.
November 30th, 2016 at 11:52 PM ^
The only time there was more State fans in Michigan was when Bubba Smith was B.M.O.C.

My sister lives in Cinci and while there are Xavier and Cincinnati fans there, there are definitely tons of Buckeye fans. Also the Xavier and Cincinnati fans cheer for the Buckeyes. I don't think you understand their hold on the state of Ohio.

I live in Cincinnati and most people here I know are OSU fans, FWIW

you have season tickets.

That guy shouldn't have been able to ref the game either. Why did Big Ten violate its own rules on who can officiate the game?

At least he wasn't a self-proclaimed Michigan fan.
November 30th, 2016 at 3:07 PM ^
Plus, I'm sure that one Michigan native was able to just waltz into the ref huddle with 3 Ohio natives and at least one known OSU fan and be like, "hey guys, I'm pretty sure that ball was uncatchable, so we should pick up the flag". I'm sure that would've worked out - he must not have been trying hard enough to be impartial.
And to let it be known, nobody from either state should be allowed to ref The Game, and the process (whatever it is) is clearly broke and/or being ignored.
November 30th, 2016 at 3:11 PM ^
He is also the ref that spotted the 4th down play, so at least we can say the ref from Michigan was objective? Although he could be an MSU fan.

His Facebook banner is a picture of the JD INT return for a TD against Northwestern last year. But that's because he is the ref in the shot, not because he is a Michigan fan.

a rant that was all anti Harbaugh on his FB page !!! And he is a B1G official ... that's enough for me.

Put a camera on the chains, one on each pole. Part of the Chain Gang's responsibility is to make sure the cameras are facing the field.

Just point out a single camera that is wireless, h-res, waterproof, durable, lightweight and can be mounted on a stick. Hell, one of those would be a Hero.

Have you seen this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqifCqWWaAk
Looks pretty clear to me. I'm open to hearing why it shouldn't be trusted, though.
November 30th, 2016 at 5:44 PM ^
Because it's manipulated. If it was real why didn't anyone else see this broadcast replay?
December 1st, 2016 at 1:18 PM ^
Yes, but unlike the photos etc, it's much harder to doctor just part of a video (e.g., the ball placement). You can clearly see in some others that the hash lines aren't consistent, for example. Not in this one.
But let's just look at the undoctored original video, for argument's sake. Someone from your own blog did the most unbiased analysis I can find, and it suggests it was a good spot: http://mgoblog.com/diaries/resolving-parallax-error
At the minimum, you have to agree that the spot was PLAUSIBLE. If you don't, you are being a big ol homer, which, while it is your right, doesn't actually make you right.
Big picture, I understand why it's a tough loss to swallow. The refs def did miss a PI on your last drive. Missed calls happen, all the time, for both teams. Take a look here, and remember that zero offensive holding calls were made: http://www.elevenwarriors.com/forum/ohio-state-football/2016/11/77473/t…
I'm sure your guys got away with their share of defensive holding on pass plays as well, as it they happen on most plays.
I know unbiased logic isn't comforting for many, but hopefully it will be for some of you.
See you next season, and be happy that we are back to respecting and fearing your team. Looking forward to another long war in the greatest rivalry in sports.

The camera angle is distorted in this shot, which means that it is not accurate. There are no camera angles where the hash marks are perpendicular to the bottom of the screen. All camera angles were off 90 degrees one way or the other.
It is a distortion of a distortion and was only posted because it looked to prove the point of the person posting it.

Or maybe he's a dolt that got tied up in having 110,000 scarlet wearin' charlatans screaming into the back of his head?
November 30th, 2016 at 4:18 PM ^
Person went to high school with him and he is an a huge sparty. Said he has been telling Harbaugh and UM to deal with it and move on becasue they lost.
November 30th, 2016 at 3:12 PM ^
Also Ohio only has one major college football team. Michigan has two. So even if we're saying they might "cancel out" (they don't---it's still fucked), you could definitely say it's not equivalent. What I mean is, if you take an average CFB fan from Grand Rapids, you're maybe 50/50 going to get a MSU fan (notwithstanding small percentage of ND fans, maybe larger UM/MSU difference depending on the year, etc). But if you find an average CFB fan in Ohio, it's pretty much 90+% likely to be an OSU fan. So it's not the same thing at all.
November 30th, 2016 at 3:23 PM ^
if the GR ref is a sparty fan, i doubt he would favor UM against OSU. in fact he would likely be biased against UM. most my sparty fans root against UM against OSU.
November 30th, 2016 at 3:43 PM ^
One of my sparty friends admitted to me on Sunday that they were rooting for PSU to beat them, so that OSU wouldn't go to the B1G championship. I LOL'd.
November 30th, 2016 at 3:58 PM ^
There are 2 major schools, so if he's not a Michigan fan, he would be a Western fan.
November 30th, 2016 at 4:04 PM ^
I know this is a joke, but not at all. Ton's of people in western Michigan are MSU fans. I have to deal with it all the time.
November 30th, 2016 at 4:16 PM ^
Western side of Michigan leans pretty heavily Green and White.

I love bagging on the guy as much as anyone, but it would probably make your editorials a little stronger if you spelled Jim's last name correctly. It's Delany, not Delaney.
(BTW, love the Fletch avatar and sig.)
