Why do people make the assumption that the old era guys wouldn't be better in todays environment. You have to account for growing up in an AAU culture, health, nutrition and training advancements etc.
The older players would be bigger, stronger and faster than they were in their era.
The Thomas, Jordans, Birds and Johnsons of the era would still be cream of the crop just because of their mentality

Elite athletes can compete in any dimension in sports and do well because of athletic ability not sport specific.
Good to great at a sport is about reps with intent.

It may be an model problem but I was beyond pissed as it is now not waterproof and my son is a swimmer.

No physical activity for 3-6 months.
So practicing and playing close to 22 or more games with 8 weeks between seasons is OK?
So stop everything to evaluate long term issues?? How long do you propose to evaluate.
What about the long term effects of a society that doesn't go to school for education or exercise with sports.
I get both sides but there is no way this goes away. We need to live with it like the normal flu.

I started my son in soccer, football, basketball and baseball. Football didn't take nor did basketball. Kid loves baseball and drags me to practice.

If I did it over I would do wrestling. My son would be much better if he had a more natural aggressive instinct.
For kids teach intent. In baseball for example tell them to throw as hard and swing as hard as they can. You cannot turn intent on when you are 15.
