An Interesting Jake Butt Quote from the Citrus Bowl
After going up 24-7 on the Gators, Jake Butt came to the sideline, looked at Jim Harbaugh, and pointed at his own eyes. He then turned to the defense and said, "You can see it in their eyes. They're going to quit. Go break their will."
Who's excited for September 3rd?

I like the multiple quotes from this year about breaking the other team (backs, will, passion for life, etc.).
Just a mentallity about these dudes now that hasn't been here in years. Jim has turned the guys into feral beasts.

I love that the players are taking on Harbaugh's mentality. Light years away from the "wins are just a statistic" attitude.

Whose quote was that?

As I mention below, that was Barry Zito. http://napavalleyregister.com/sports/athletics-break-losing-skid/article_ee919630-9b81-5beb-9d2e-bf692d94beb8.html

D. Funchess I believe.....and seeing how he's palying in the NFL makes me hate Hoke even more now. That guy is a beast who was completelt wasted on the previous coaching staff. Too bad he didn't come back for this year....would have made a huge difference.
January 5th, 2016 at 2:29 PM ^
Can you imagine if Funchess was actually used as the flex TE and Butt as the traditional TE. That would have been a pretty unstoppable offense right there. Next year shall be fun

Who was it that you think said "wins are just a statistic?"
Besides, of course, pitcher Barry Zito of the Seattle Mariners in 2001, which is the only example that appears (outside of blogs) in a google search.

In the space of one calendar year Harbaugh has changed UM from a team everyone wanted to play to a team no one wants to play. Guys like Butt are returning for a reason. They feel great things are at hand.

I also didn't hear any "We knew exactly what they were going to do" comments from Florida. (And even if they did know, there was nothing they could do to stop it.)

Bo's teams were strategically predictable, of course, in that they ran the ball a ton. But how they ran it was another story: I form, wishbone, using the QB, using the FB, etc. It was not at all just zone left and zone right.

For sure, but only because Bo spanned different eras in terms of formations. You still knew he was going to run the ball. And he preferred to do it with a 235 pound RB between the hashes.
Lloyd wasn't a helluva lot different, but his QB's were artillery pieces ("Henne, Brady, Grbac Navarre, all of these men could throw very far...") - not the option guys of the 70's and 80's.

played under Bo and Moeller.
January 5th, 2016 at 10:12 AM ^
Once Harbaugh/Drevno get the oline straightened out, there will be a heavy dose of running the ball down the opponents throat. It won't necessarily be that way from the opening snap, but once UM gets a comfortable lead. We saw it a little bit early in the year against the likes of Oregon St, BYU, etc.

And part of the reason the grinding run game happens in the 2nd half aside from just the strategic value of preserving a lead & eating up clock is that it just takes that long for the attrition to show up in the actual plays. Often times a greatly over-matched D-Line might be able to somewhat hold their own in the 1st quarter of a game by burning an enormous amount of energy. Anybody can "play up" for a particular play or a particular series. But as time goes on and fatigue sets in, it's usually the 3rd or 4th quarter where the 2-4 yard runs turn into 5-8 yard runs.

3 things I'd like to mention about this article.
The halftime interview with the Florida Coach seemed so different than anything we heard from Harbaugh's preparation for this game. His statement was something like 'we're going to go out in the second half and have fun and throw the ball around'. Seemed really laid back compared to Harbaugh's strategy.
During the Citrus Bowl trophy presentation on ESPN3, Chesson mentioned something about 3 roommates all scoring a TD in a bowl game being a record. That was pretty funny as I doubt anybody keeps track of that.
And last, it was brought to my attention recently that Doug Karsh is an MSU grad. Is this common knowledge? I had no idea. The guy is pretty professional and I've enjoyed his work for years.
