"The Victors" --Victory Version?
Paging Bando/Wolverine Historian/mgousers
So i was just thinking about how the band used to play the Victors slowly and with different inflections as soon as the clock hit triple zeroes after a win. Then follow it up with the normal Victors.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
The last time I remember it being played was during the Carr era. I'm assuming a new band director came in and decided to take it out.
Should it be brought back? Did anyone notice it was gone?
I kinda liked it as it portrayed the cocky arrogance of "yeah, we just kicked your ass." Then again, nothing beats the classic.
EDIT: ok, looks like it's called "Victors Waltz." I say bring it back. Win with character. Win with cruelty.

I know what you're talking about. It can be heard at the end of this video.

WD, how in the world were you ever able to find this or know where it was???
/smh in amazement!

Because I loved this version when I was young and this was the only place I could find it. That video has been up a lonnnnnng time.
Back when YouTube wasn't infested with ads and the user interface wasn't complete shit. Ever since Google bought it, it's been a nightmare to navigate around.

Ah, and don't forget the "Minor is Major" call at 3:45.
Wish he didn't have injuries...he did some good things while he could.
Oh yeah, and Victors at end.

Posted the 2008 Capital One Bowl. That wasn't the right one, it was actually 2008 Wisconsin.

Played fast or slow, brings the chills.

For as much as people tended to complain about everything we ever did, the fact that I never heard any complaining about that tells me they were probably right.

Agreed, bring it back. It would be kind of nice to play it after every Michigan victory.

But now I'm annoyed! Bring it back!

Shut your whore mouth. It was a pretty much a band decision. We weren't winning much so we didn't play it as much, which for some reason resulted in us not having it memorized properly. It was starting to sound bad and most people just didn't really care about it at the time. I guess everyone was more focused on our football team's woes. I'm all for bringing it back now though.

Yep, it was the Victors Waltz.
Honestly, I completely forgot about it until this thread, but yes. I was in the band with both Nix and Boerma, and I think we played it in Boerma's first year. I really can't remember. Come to think of it, haven't heard it since.
There were a lot of things phased out or changed for basically no reason at all around then. But I digress.

Now that I think of it Bando, I remember playing it in the 70s at basketball games (and maybe hockey too). I think it was limited to sports other than football until the 90s.
January 4th, 2016 at 12:58 PM ^
We played it in 2008 for sure and Scotty B got rid of it the next year. We never really practiced it much and we only got to play it 3 times in 2008 :(, so I think Boerma figured it wasnt worth playing. They still handed out the music every year though lol.

No, 2009 was my first year and we played it all year, the next year it was phased out toward the middle of the season.

Of course it didn't help that we didn't win a lot at that time either, but I still blame the shitty director for fucking it all up

They should definitely bring it back. The piped in music people probably didn't think it was what Michigan football is all about - not enough fireworks.

Nothing is better than playing "The Victors"...the way God intended.

Victors Waltz is not an alternate tempo version of the Victors. It is a different arrangement in a different time signature (3/4 vs 4/4) with a slower tempo.
Same goes for Calyptors

I love the Victors Waltz. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think it is older than 97-98. My brother was in the band from 1983-87. I'll ask him.
My favorite variant however is Calyptors. Can't get enough of that one.

You are right for sure. I just went on youtube and watched the end of a bunch of games from the mid to late eighties and NO victors waltz.

Good stuff.

My favorite was always, besides the original, was always Hoover Street Rag. Credit to those backing Calyptors though.

It was played before the team started regularly coming over to the students/band to sing the fight song. There was one time I can recall (ND 2006) where the players came over to sing with the band and seemed confused that the slow version was being played, but they went along with it. I wouldn't be surprised if that confusion was related to the demise of the Victors Waltz.

Yeah, that makes sense and I can understand the awkwardness. When it was introduced, we were told that we would play it some time during the last 3 minutes of the game, when it was a lock. But as we all know, sometimes things aren't a lock until time runs out and I can definitely see it being awkward once the team was sent over to have to wait through Victors Waltz.
January 4th, 2016 at 9:00 AM ^
It works in kneeldown situations if you start playing it as time is ticking away. There's usually a little window there, as the players are shaking hands with the other team before they run over to the students.

Never heard it before. It's cool though for shizzle.

National Champions, hail to the victors valiant. Didn't get better than that.
