Alright...the time has come. We're less than 2 weeks out, pick who you think wins the battle (for week 1 only, not the entire season).

I don't think he is in a position battle.

In the standard 4-3 I think Peppers was playing corner with Wilson and HIll running the saftey spots.
August 22nd, 2015 at 2:45 PM ^
I thought he had that spot all sewn up.

We have one quality CB in Lewis, who is good to very good, but not great, and a decent FS in Wilson. That's it. We have no one else on the roster at DB who has impressed at all.

He's a "saftey/LB hybrid" hes a swiss army knife so to say.
August 22nd, 2015 at 2:51 PM ^
Peppers will be on the field for every down that he physically can be, but that is going to be a S, CB, and Nickel. He can play every position in the secondary which is great because we have good depth at S and guys that need to get on the field
August 22nd, 2015 at 2:51 PM ^
Appreciate you answering the question honestly...interesting stuff.
August 22nd, 2015 at 3:16 PM ^
Between him and J. Lewis they wont ever come off the field unless they cant play.
August 22nd, 2015 at 8:30 PM ^
Which is why neither is listed.

our best defensive player? He's in his third year, and he's done very little, far less than a lot of other guys we're putting out there. If we have nobody better than him, that doesn't say much for our defense.

over the last seven years? Far more than have ended up being worth a darn. I don't believe a word of it any more. Practice buzz is meaningless. Only performance in real competition against real opponents means anything. That's the only thing that wins games
August 22nd, 2015 at 7:27 PM ^
If these "insiders" are right and Hill is a better player than Peppers... wow!
August 22nd, 2015 at 5:36 PM ^
Think this was also mentioned back in the spring...got to get Hill on the field.
August 22nd, 2015 at 5:20 PM ^
i saw this same inside chatter about most of these positions.. but i doubt Perry beats out Canteen overall.
I was surprised to see all the Delano Hill talk.. He was pretty horrible at times last year..
All i can think about is how he was horrible on that long TD pass at MSU last year and parts of the ND game getting torched.
But if he has improved that much im excited for it
August 22nd, 2015 at 6:00 PM ^
I was thinking the same thing about Hill. He must've really came around because I remember seeing him get embarrassed in the MSU game. Especially on the sideline for that long touchdown. Just seems to me that when there are three linebackers on the field I'd have to take Peppers at strong safety. I'd trust Lyons or Clark on the edge. I thought Clark looked like the stud last year before he got hurt. I guess I have to see Delano before I start popping off. I dont know what is going on there. I know its bad ass though that the secondary is being called the best group. Almost positive the linebackers and d-line were already very good.

that he struggled at times last year but players do get better. In addition, I'm assuming the instruction he's getting this past spring and in fall camp is way better than what he was getting last year.
I'm guessing there's going to be a few players who make noticeable improvements this year compared to what they have done in the past year(s).

I agree with this. They had a similar number of carries but Johnson had a better ypc and one more TD despite 20 fewer touches. Also, 1/3 of Green's total season yardage came from the App State game, which Johnson didn't play in. Johnson had to earn his yardaged against Indiana, Maryland and Ohio State.
August 22nd, 2015 at 2:57 PM ^
Did I miss the sarcasm? Cuz the kid proved it on the field last year, against Power 5 competition.
August 22nd, 2015 at 3:05 PM ^
August 22nd, 2015 at 3:07 PM ^
So Green and Smith racking up yards and TDs against the likes of App State and Miami Ohio is more impressive than Johnson doing the same against the national champs?
August 22nd, 2015 at 3:18 PM ^
Drake is a good cutback runner but he clearly cant be an every down back.
August 22nd, 2015 at 3:45 PM ^
August 22nd, 2015 at 5:32 PM ^
Hes not a very fluid runner his running stride is choppy which may have contributed to his torn ACL's. He can't stay healthy as well. He's not very good in pass pro. He's too small.
August 22nd, 2015 at 5:55 PM ^
20 years were small....you should watch more football before posting such absurd opinions.

Inside chat has Deveon smith as the starter and Green and Isaac won't play very much unless smith really bombs

He's not in the same stratosphere as Green and Smith, despite being far more productive than them? Not sure I follow your logic there
August 22nd, 2015 at 2:59 PM ^
When he was healthy and hd his chance last year, he looked every bit as good as Green and Smith, running behind the same O-line, if not better. He had more speed and better instincts than either of them. Maybe he won't start this year, but he's already competed as well as they have at a Power 5 level, so your post is more than a little silly.
August 22nd, 2015 at 3:06 PM ^
Drake was the best back on the squad last season. Staff just didn't realize it til late. He was far more instinctual and explosive than Green or Smith.

August 22nd, 2015 at 3:33 PM ^
didn't show any more than Johnson even when they were healthy. Were you watching the running game at all last year?
August 22nd, 2015 at 3:33 PM ^
Man, you really seem to dislike this kid. Is it because he didn't have those shiny recruiting stars you covet so much?

August 22nd, 2015 at 4:02 PM ^
I'd be upset if the most productive running back on the roster didn't get playing time (provided he's healthy of course). Fortunately, I think Harbaugh is smarter than Hoke and knows what he has in Drake. I'd also like to know how you know that Drake will never start over 2 RB's he's proven to be better than. Do you have any insider info that the rest of us aren't privy to?
August 22nd, 2015 at 5:16 PM ^
The inside chatter currently FWIW is that Smith is the clear cut starter and Green and Isaac will play sparingly only to spot Smith.
Even that baffles me as if our Oline plays as well as it was against OSU last year in the running game then i can't see how smith beats out green or isaac unless green still falls over by barely toucing someone.. and isaac is just hurt.
August 22nd, 2015 at 5:44 PM ^
Maybe Smith out worked the others and earned it....we all know he is tough as nails so he has that going for him and I'm sure Harbaugh loves that. As as for the flaws in his game....maybe the lightbulb has come on and he's finding the hole and getting the extra yards.
I mean he was the first back taken in the spring game draft so its not THAT surprising that he'd end up at the top of the depth chart.
August 22nd, 2015 at 6:19 PM ^
Curious to know if there is someone you hope to see win the job. Maybe I missed that post, as all I see is negativity toward someone who busted his ass to get back on the field and produced once he got a chance.
BTW, I'm not saying I want Drake to be the top RB at all. If we start out the season with a guy who has his injury history as the top option, we're in trouble. (Personally I hope Green puts it together, and the other guys all continue to push him and produce when they see the field)
August 22nd, 2015 at 4:01 PM ^
All aboard the crazy train! I think we have a ton of talent at RB, which could make it hard for Drake to see the field depending on how things ae playing out. That being said, the kid has clearly proven he can compete at this level. He has looked as good as any RB we've had the past couple years when he has gotten to carry the ball.
