OT: Olbermann on Hope Solo's Double Standard
I think sports organizations should stay out of legal matters letting the court of law decide unless it's like Hernandez level of bad...
However...
At least be consistent if you are going to react to social media and public opinion on these kinds of things...which also brings us to the initial problem... when is social media/public opinion EVER consistent about "outrage?"
Meh...
From reading the story it sounds like quite the mess. It is a huge double standard that Nike dropped Tiger but kept Hope.

Nike dropped Tiger? That's news to me.
I think he meant Gatorade?
Nike...ah...Gatorade, I can see how they are easy to mix up. Those new Gatorade basketball shoes are the real deal! Hope Hackett has us sign with Gatorade!!!
Seems like there's too little media attention on women's soccer for the 'outrage' to be loud enough and too much pressure on the USWNT to win. I think the WNT is hoping everyone will sort of forget about it all

I can only imagine the reaction by social media "activists" like Michelle Beadle and Rachel Nichols if this was said about a guy...

He could take the kickoff all the way back
He lettered, but I don't think it was for soccer.
still has man hands
The husband standing by her has also had numerous domestic altercations with her...
He is a serial shitbag as well. Convicted of numerous DUIs, assault and accused of rape.

They deserve each other.

I think it's more of a "see! everyone does it but different demographics get punished differently" anyone with eyes and ears kind of reasoning.
The argument is no matter who commits the crime, the punishment should be the same. If a white man and a black man both commit an equal crime, they should be sentenced equally. If a man rapes a woman and a woman rapes a man, each case should be taken as legitimately as the other and sentenced equally.
Hope Solo shouldn't get off of her punishment for any reason, whether it is because it is thought that men can't be victims of domestic violence or it is becuase she is a famous athlete with an important game to play.
It's not about "wins" and activism. It's about establishing a precedence of fair and consistent judgement, so that there are clear and ethical guidelines for the future of our society.
What? Your comment doesn't follow basic logic. If Olbermann's argument was a "see everyone is doing it" argument it would be a defense of Ray Rice or Solo. Clearly it is not. In claiming a double standard exists he is saying that the same offense - domestic abuse - is perceived by the public and more importantyl handled by the respective governing body differently based on an irrelevent attribute- in this case gender. Solo's offense appears to be on a level with Rice's but only because she is female it is ignored and unpunished. Rice wasn't convicted of anything either. Yeah yeah there is that ugly video. While no video exists to document Solo's alleged abuse the testimony of the officers on scene, the public statements from her sister and Solo's shadiness in not allowing police to examine or photograph her, but claiming she was the one attacked (hit over the head with a broomstick) is pretty damning. I'm not an Olbermann fan but I agree with him on this one. Whatever, there are tons of double standards and they are not going away.
involves playing surfaces. I think one is deserving of more attention than the other.
It is indeed unfair that they are using turf. That is beyond dispute. But do recall that the men will have to play in fucking Qatar. Nothing like playing soccer/futbol in an arid country located in arguably the most unstable region in the world.
Fuck Fifa.
which has been covered plenty from what I've seen--should receive as much attention as the violent acts of arguably the US's best player? Since when does playing surface issues equal domestic violence on the scale of social importance??
You also keep overlooking the fact that the men will have to play in a far more dangerous part of the world in 2022 than the women and in a climate not conducive for strenuous activity. Fifa doesn't care about men or women based on both of these decisions.
No one where is talking about "how only men have it bad in society". Not as all. You are making a dubious argument and your response to my challenging of that argument is to fall back on a purposeful mischaracterization of what has been said.Weak brew.
Pointing out examples of violence against man(perpetrated by other men) is not saying that "only men" suffer but rather expanding the field of vision. I'm complaining about the narrow view of how we look at violence caused by the narrow visions of activist groups representing segments of the population. America is the sum total of women, men, gays, straights, transgender, blacks, whites, asians, hispanics, etc. and all of her problems need to be viewed with that in mind. That is my point.
You're 100% correct that having the women play on artificial turf is absolute bullshit, at least so long as the men don't have to play on turf. (I've played on turf, and it's not that bad with the right boots, but MGoBrewMom is right that it's another double standard.) However, the turf issue is so far-removed from the Hope Solo issue. So very far.
There is credible evidence that she beat the shit out of her nephew and sister. She is known to be a bit of an asshole anyway (don't believe me? ask UofM's soccer coach, or any number of other people who've dealt with her). Hope Solo suffers from the same having "gotten a pass on any misstep because of her athletic skills" that the likes of Ray Rice/Jeyru Campbell/Ben Roethlisberger have "enjoyed". And what she seems to have learned is that the big lie, oft repeated, is sufficient to avoid the consequences of your actions.
I've written on Solo's character issues here before, and got a lot of "hurrh, hurrh, but she's got a great ass" witticisms in response. Olbermann's point is that the behavior that Solo's accused of should be treated just as seriously as if it were man-on-woman abuse. His most stinging point is his first one - the NFL is actually ahead of U.S. Soccer on this. That's just embarrassing.
I don't want her representing my country and my Soccer Federation. It's an honor to play for the USWNT, and she's fallen short in numerous respects. I hope she never suits up for the U.S. again, and that life finally forces her to look into the mirror and realize that she needs to change and change soon. We may not be able to find a similarly-skilled and competitive keeper, but that's secondary.
Finally, yes. Screw FIFA. But here, it's more screw U.S. Soccer and their tone-deaf defense of a loathsome person.
In Canada, where the old joke "Eight months of hockey and four months of bad ice" is pretty much spot on, I think a 3G FIFA 2-Star surface is as safe as what they could reasonably expect to provide with natural grass. It also allows play in an indoor stadium.
I have seen arguments on both sides; here is someone who thinks the risk of injuries is equal on 3G turf and natural grass. One of the more interesting arguments he makes is that old, 1G or 2G turf is what a lot of anti-turf people remember and are basing their arguments on old "technology."

The heck with injuries. It makes the ball too bouncy.
Weren't the games played at the Silverdome on turf?
