Currently TE coach that came over with the Washington regime.

Linky.

SO.  How we now feeling about OUR offseason all of a sudden?

It looks like ND paid him through 2016. That's seven years after he was fired and three years longer than he actually coached the team. He also collected money from Kansas and a couple NFL teams in that time.

Yeah, the guy was an abject failure as a head coach, but..... he also grossed $64.5MM doing so.

I'm sure Bama fans are meh over it. Given that the last 15 years they've had everything they've ever wanted, they got everything they ever wanted and more, and only ever had the best of anything and everything, I imagine having Nick Sheridan as your OC doesn't do much to inspire them.

But he'll get his chance to prove them wrong, so we'll see. Hope he does well!

Indiana has had some good coaches over the years.  The difference is that I'm pretty sure Indiana doesn't cheat at football.  Saban had some big wins at MSU, but didn't have a great record overall.  He became pretty good with LSU money and great with Bama money.  As per the Blue@LSU analysis (which you should read an upvote so that we get more free data analysis) Saban is a good/great coach even when you factor in the talent at Bama.  DeBoer was at Indiana in 2019 and they went 8-4.   8-4 is probably the ceiling for any Indiana team. They lost to

#8 OSU  10-51

#25 MSU 31-40

#9 PSU 27-34

#13 Michigan 14-39

Sheridan was there during Wilson and Tom Allen's tenures.  Wilson was slightly plus and Allen was on the bad chart.

TLDR-DeBoer and Sheridan are good coaches and will do well with the bama talent.

To be fair to Saban, MSU was under sanctions his first four seasons and only had about 70 scholarship players.  He managed to avoid a losing season during that time, which was a decent accomplishment.  The year they got off sanctions, in 1999, he went 10-2.  He may have gone on to build something there, but LSU came calling and MSU thankfully was too cheap to match their offer.

I think he'll do alright, but you have to wonder a little about someone who was broomed as OC at Indiana. I can definitely see Bama fans being underwhelmed with the hire, especially on the heels of Tommy Rees. My heart truly goes out to them.

DeBoer was the brainpower behind the Indy offense before he left to coach at Fresno. I think he feels Nick can thrive as long as DeBoer is still calling some of the shots. Give, how Indy imploded post Covid, Nick probably got a bad rap and was a fall guy for Allen until the next OC also got canned.

always happy to see a Michigan Man successful somewhere else as long as it doesn't hurt us.

He had a great 2020 as OC with Penix; a bad 2021 without.

I wouldn't be happy as a Bama fan, but as a neutral party, I trust Deboer. I don't think there is enough data on Sheridan as an OC. Indiana's Oline couldn't block a 3-legged puppy in 2021.

Still annoyed with how many coaches we lost but I am honestly happy with the staff if the "rumors" of Scrugg, Jean-Mary, and Parker end up being true.

It is an upgrade from Tommy Rees.

Despite our complaints and quite honestly sympathy for Nick Sheridan (just didn't have the physical tools to be successful as a D-1 starting QB), at least he never fumbled the ball without any contact happening to him. That alone is good enough to put him above Turnover Tommy

Weren't IU fans pretty sour on Sheridan as an OC at Indiana? I can't imagine Bama fans are happy about this. Time to get Jamie on the podcast again to get his opinion

Still feel like Warde was incredibly penny-wise, pound-foolish not to give Herbert an extra 10% and extend him two years.  Would have been best ROI imaginable.

I harbor no ill will to Nick Sheridan and thought he was a serviceable backup during RR's first year...but he was a mediocre OC at Indiana and going from TE coach to OC seems like a panic move.  I get that DeBoer is the HC and will guide the offense, plus Grubb leaving was unexpected, but it's sort of crazy that Alabama is struggling to get an OC.

If Sheridan lights it up at Alabama and Michigan’s offense flounders the next few years, most of the people taking digs at this hire will be calling for Sherrone’s head and will be demanding that Michigan hire Sheridan as the head coach.

DeBoer is an offensive coach, and has been a play caller.  This may be a case of him bringing Sheridan along (mentoring/training) while he still has control of the offense.  Slow transition.  Isn't this what we all said about Campbell and Moore?  DeBoer has success at offensive development, game planning, and turn arounds, so that doesn't seem like a stretch.  I'm sure Alabama fans won't react well, and will get their torches and pitchforks at the first sign of trouble.  That could happen at Michigan as well.
