It looks like ND paid him through 2016. That's seven years after he was fired and three years longer than he actually coached the team. He also collected money from Kansas and a couple NFL teams in that time.
Yeah, the guy was an abject failure as a head coach, but..... he also grossed $64.5MM doing so.

Tuck Coming is hurt that people are forgetting about him already.
February 13th, 2024 at 3:00 PM ^
He didn't really fail upward all that much though, or for that long. Just a quick burst.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:15 AM ^
I'm sure Bama fans are meh over it. Given that the last 15 years they've had everything they've ever wanted, they got everything they ever wanted and more, and only ever had the best of anything and everything, I imagine having Nick Sheridan as your OC doesn't do much to inspire them.
But he'll get his chance to prove them wrong, so we'll see. Hope he does well!
February 13th, 2024 at 11:23 AM ^
They basically have Indiana's staff from a few years ago which is pretty funny.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:39 AM ^
That is funny actually.
Bama is so used to their coordinators coming and going from the NFL they will probably not be overly happy

Indiana has had some good coaches over the years. The difference is that I'm pretty sure Indiana doesn't cheat at football. Saban had some big wins at MSU, but didn't have a great record overall. He became pretty good with LSU money and great with Bama money. As per the Blue@LSU analysis (which you should read an upvote so that we get more free data analysis) Saban is a good/great coach even when you factor in the talent at Bama. DeBoer was at Indiana in 2019 and they went 8-4. 8-4 is probably the ceiling for any Indiana team. They lost to
#8 OSU 10-51
#25 MSU 31-40
#9 PSU 27-34
#13 Michigan 14-39
Sheridan was there during Wilson and Tom Allen's tenures. Wilson was slightly plus and Allen was on the bad chart.
TLDR-DeBoer and Sheridan are good coaches and will do well with the bama talent.
February 13th, 2024 at 2:01 PM ^
To be fair to Saban, MSU was under sanctions his first four seasons and only had about 70 scholarship players. He managed to avoid a losing season during that time, which was a decent accomplishment. The year they got off sanctions, in 1999, he went 10-2. He may have gone on to build something there, but LSU came calling and MSU thankfully was too cheap to match their offer.
February 13th, 2024 at 12:13 PM ^
I'm sure many Bama fans will be furious about this hire rather than meh. With their resources and tradition, they expect to get whoever they want. They have to be looking at OSU's move and wonder what's happening.
February 13th, 2024 at 1:58 PM ^
I'm guessing DeBoer might actually be calling plays in the short term.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:19 AM ^
Wow what a come up.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:19 AM ^
good for him!
Felt bad for him since he suffered the RR years.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:25 AM ^
Or you can think of it as he actually got a chance to play. And he'll always have the Minnesota win.
Nick: "Me, I'm here to hold a clipboard and to learn, in hopes of becoming OC in the future at a place like Alabama."
RR: "Nick, you're in."
Nick: "Wwwwwhhhaaaattt????"
February 13th, 2024 at 12:24 PM ^
Surprised I had to read this far before seeing a post that concentrated on congratulating Nick. Good for him indeed.
Quite a jump, though, and I'd guess that it would make Alabama fans a little nervous. DeBoer is no fool, though, and must believe in Sheridan.

SO. How we now feeling about OUR offseason all of a sudden?'
Not sure what this has to do with UM's offseason. I prefer Campbell over Sheridan as the OC.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:23 AM ^
Nick getting his due after suffering through the RR transition.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:25 AM ^
I think he'll do alright, but you have to wonder a little about someone who was broomed as OC at Indiana. I can definitely see Bama fans being underwhelmed with the hire, especially on the heels of Tommy Rees. My heart truly goes out to them.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:25 AM ^
DeBoer was the brainpower behind the Indy offense before he left to coach at Fresno. I think he feels Nick can thrive as long as DeBoer is still calling some of the shots. Give, how Indy imploded post Covid, Nick probably got a bad rap and was a fall guy for Allen until the next OC also got canned.
always happy to see a Michigan Man successful somewhere else as long as it doesn't hurt us.
February 13th, 2024 at 12:11 PM ^
Yep Sheridan kept things going in 2020 before he saw the Wile E Coyote dropoff in 2021. A reunion could be successful, especially with better players in place at Bama as opposed to Indiana (where depth of talent really hurt them).
February 13th, 2024 at 11:30 AM ^
He had a great 2020 as OC with Penix; a bad 2021 without.
I wouldn't be happy as a Bama fan, but as a neutral party, I trust Deboer. I don't think there is enough data on Sheridan as an OC. Indiana's Oline couldn't block a 3-legged puppy in 2021.

SO. How we now feeling about OUR offseason all of a sudden?
Still annoyed with how many coaches we lost but I am honestly happy with the staff if the "rumors" of Scrugg, Jean-Mary, and Parker end up being true.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:34 AM ^
I hope Nick has much success. I was a fan of his when he was on the team.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:35 AM ^
It is an upgrade from Tommy Rees.
Despite our complaints and quite honestly sympathy for Nick Sheridan (just didn't have the physical tools to be successful as a D-1 starting QB), at least he never fumbled the ball without any contact happening to him. That alone is good enough to put him above Turnover Tommy
February 13th, 2024 at 11:40 AM ^
Seeing as we will be National Champions for the entire offseason, I feel pretty good about it!
February 13th, 2024 at 11:46 AM ^
Mike Hart needs to be elevated or go somewhere that will elevate him. Nick and Hart were both coaches at Indiana.
February 13th, 2024 at 12:08 PM ^
Hart should have been made co-offensive coordinator. He would be the run side of the offense.

Weren't IU fans pretty sour on Sheridan as an OC at Indiana? I can't imagine Bama fans are happy about this. Time to get Jamie on the podcast again to get his opinion
February 13th, 2024 at 11:50 AM ^
Does he employ that R-Rod philosophy of lean 220lb OLinemen that can move quick = winning? Can't wait to see how that works in the SEC.
February 13th, 2024 at 12:06 PM ^
Way to go Nick! One day in the future you will be the Michigan coach.
February 13th, 2024 at 12:10 PM ^
Awesome for Nick! Always good to see a Michigan Man have success. Just don't screw it up and he'll have a shot at a HC spot sooner than later.
February 13th, 2024 at 12:18 PM ^
Still feel like Warde was incredibly penny-wise, pound-foolish not to give Herbert an extra 10% and extend him two years. Would have been best ROI imaginable.
February 13th, 2024 at 3:32 PM ^
Probably still less than the Chargers. The guy wants to be part of Harbaughs crew.
February 13th, 2024 at 12:32 PM ^
I harbor no ill will to Nick Sheridan and thought he was a serviceable backup during RR's first year...but he was a mediocre OC at Indiana and going from TE coach to OC seems like a panic move. I get that DeBoer is the HC and will guide the offense, plus Grubb leaving was unexpected, but it's sort of crazy that Alabama is struggling to get an OC.
February 13th, 2024 at 1:57 PM ^
If Sheridan lights it up at Alabama and Michigan’s offense flounders the next few years, most of the people taking digs at this hire will be calling for Sherrone’s head and will be demanding that Michigan hire Sheridan as the head coach.
February 13th, 2024 at 2:21 PM ^
DeBoer is an offensive coach, and has been a play caller. This may be a case of him bringing Sheridan along (mentoring/training) while he still has control of the offense. Slow transition. Isn't this what we all said about Campbell and Moore? DeBoer has success at offensive development, game planning, and turn arounds, so that doesn't seem like a stretch. I'm sure Alabama fans won't react well, and will get their torches and pitchforks at the first sign of trouble. That could happen at Michigan as well.
February 13th, 2024 at 4:10 PM ^
Good for Nick! That group of coaches at Indiana are pretty tight.
February 13th, 2024 at 4:54 PM ^
Good for him. Always good to see people who were once affiliated with Michigan succeeding post-playing time.
February 13th, 2024 at 5:23 PM ^
Alabama’s last two OCs being Tommy Rees and now Sheridan is proof that all empires crumble eventually
