Michigan currently leads list of schools with all-time appearances in Super Bowl

Funny... I don't see osu on this list.
February 6th, 2024 at 8:48 AM ^
It's not you--it's them.
February 6th, 2024 at 8:49 AM ^
THIS times 1000. And Alabama not on list. This needs to be a new general narrative in recruiting. This is very significant, considering how many OSU players are drafted yet never reach the big game, and it's telling. What's interesting is Miami. Wonder if that is residual from the Jimmy Johnson years. And Nebraska? Hat tip to them.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:20 AM ^
I read somewhere that a player who finished their career at Alabama has never scored a point in a Super Bowl.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:50 AM ^
I'm assuming TD passes don't count because Bart Starr was in Super Bowl I and II. It's insane to think that Bama has only had 49 players, and a very large majority of those are defensive players.
February 6th, 2024 at 10:15 AM ^
Correct, only the person who crosses the goal line (or kicks it through the upright) gets the points.
Tom Brady only has 168 career points for example, thanks to his 28 rushing TDs.

In that regard, this post (although a few years old), is not something we want in the hands of our rivals.
Although, it must mean that our O Line and Defense churns out lots of Super Bowl players.
February 6th, 2024 at 12:24 PM ^
and don't forget "Broadway Joe" Namath in SBIII, but no points for him.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:51 AM ^
Never forget that those late 90's early 2000's Miami teams always had a dozen+ future pro bowlers and another bucket of long-term NFL starters.
February 6th, 2024 at 1:23 PM ^
It helped the Cowboys drafted many Miami players at the same time they were playing in three Super Bowls with Jimmy Johnson as coach.
February 6th, 2024 at 12:05 PM ^
Credit for Miami has to go to Howard Schnellenberger even more than Johnson. He formed a nothing program into national champions in 1983 and they took off from there.
February 6th, 2024 at 8:59 AM ^
OR "It's funny butt I don't see osu on this list."
February 6th, 2024 at 9:30 AM ^
I see Ohio's SUPERBOWL
February 6th, 2024 at 9:58 AM ^
Is that the new addition to Ohio Stadium and SafeLite (Repair, Safelite Replace) Field that's been discussed to ensure that weather isn't ever a factor when they take the field?
There's a rumor - even with that sporty looking addition - factors can create a "swirl" effect inside - or under that wonderful movable roof.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:35 AM ^
Or one of their QBs
February 6th, 2024 at 9:35 AM ^
It's cool and everything but really if the Alabama's of the world have their players picked in the early rounds by the worse teams they're not going to be in the Super Bowl. Only those players picked in the later rounds by the ususal suspects who play in the Super Bowl. Really it's not much of a flex.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:50 AM ^
If the player is good enough to *stay* in the NFL for more than the first contract, they will get a shot at a SuperBowl team.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:54 AM ^
I don't think that makes any sense. Good teams get to pick at the end of the "early rounds." It's not like the Lions and Browns get to take the first twenty players in the draft.
If you're kidding, well done.
February 6th, 2024 at 6:51 PM ^
Alabama has the most number 1st Round picks in the NFL draft history. They also have the most current NFL players. Most all chosen early in the draft and probably signed long term deals with the teams that picked them. So the assumption that Bama players don't develop is ridiculous. And I hate Bama.
February 6th, 2024 at 10:05 AM ^
If NFL players had one-year careers, that logic might make sense.
February 6th, 2024 at 10:21 AM ^
They had the flu
February 6th, 2024 at 9:12 PM ^
And you never will .....
February 6th, 2024 at 8:47 AM ^
Is there anyway that both teams, minus Michigan players can both lose this weekend? Lions vs Ravens had some teeth. This game will be purely watched for the commercials.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:34 AM ^
swifties
February 6th, 2024 at 12:09 PM ^
Good time to go to the gym. And the game will be on tvs so you can check in if you want
February 6th, 2024 at 8:49 AM ^
Tom Brady alone could almost make the list.
Nebraska may be the most surprising one on the list. Maybe one of the most surprising not on the list is Alabama.
This just shows how consistently good the Michigan program has been over the last LVIII seasons.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:00 AM ^
"over the last LVIII seasons"
Niiice.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:05 AM ^
Teams have “ebbs and flows”. Michigan’s consistency in development would be a great “take away” from the list.
Bama not being on the list isn’t a huge surprise since they had a notable “less than great” period prior to Saban.
LSU seems like a surprise - tough division / conference - and, that’s a credit to them. A positive on player development.
And - neither Texas or Oklahoma.
Thanks for posting.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:10 AM ^
I believe we had a notable "less than great" period prior to Harbaugh as well and we still made #1!
February 6th, 2024 at 9:59 AM ^
Touche... very good point..
February 6th, 2024 at 9:09 AM ^
Is it 130 players, like Brady counts once? Or 130 times, like Brady counts 10 times?
February 6th, 2024 at 9:19 AM ^
Given the year-old data in this article https://www.siouxlandproud.com/sports/the-big-game/15-colleges-that-have-produced-the-most-super-bowl-players/
Brady would count as 10.
#3. Michigan
– Total appearances on Super Bowl rosters: 122
– Unique players on Super Bowl rosters: 79
– Most prolific player: Tom Brady (10)
February 6th, 2024 at 9:37 AM ^
Thanks again Tom!
February 6th, 2024 at 9:43 AM ^
Hey, give Chad Henne his flowers too!
February 6th, 2024 at 9:40 AM ^
If you're trying to judge overall program presence in the Super Bowl, I think the most meaningful metric is number of unique players on SB rosters.
Michigan is #5 in that listing, behind Miami, USC, PSU, and Tennessee. Still damn impressive, esp. considering the 7-year decline the program had under RR and Hoke.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:14 AM ^
Do OSU and Bama recruits and systems lean into their players natural talents to get them through college?
And do they end up not developing further? That has always been my suspicion.
The super bowl list presents a sample size challenge. But if someone wanted to do a deeper statistical dive on players drafted/draft position/school and years/winning success in NFL that could be really informative.
I am sure UM would be right at/near the top.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:23 AM ^
Name the only player who was an OSU starting QB to take a SNAP in a Super Bowl as a QB? When did he play in the game and what was his passer rating?
Name the only player who was an OSU starting QB to START in a Super Bowl? (Hint: It wasn't as a QB!)
Hint hint: You gotta be old to remember these dudes.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:49 AM ^
I'm going to guess Mike Tomczak took a snap at QB for Chicago and Rex Kern started at safety for Miami.
February 6th, 2024 at 11:35 AM ^
OK, that was diving even more into the archives. You got Tomczak right--and he went 0-for-0 b/c he only handed off in garbage time of Super Bowl XX, Da Bears' win.
I actually was thinking of Tom Tupa, who was a punter in the NFL. Kern was before my time. So ok, OSU has TWO QBs who have started in a Super Bowl. Color me more impressed.

Guaranteed 12 with TB coming when he's eligible.

I can project Steve Hutchison at 13 and I want to live to see the day his parents see that.
February 6th, 2024 at 9:49 AM ^
Desmond Howard and Tom Brady have been MVPs as well.

leaders and best
February 6th, 2024 at 10:14 AM ^
The most surprising team for me on the list is UCLA. They've had maybe 1-2 good teams per decade over the past 30+ years.
February 6th, 2024 at 11:08 AM ^
That was the one that jumped out at me - along with the obvious omissions already noted.
February 6th, 2024 at 10:15 AM ^
Mike Lodish and his six SB appearances doing some heavy lifting to get UCLA in that Top 5...
February 6th, 2024 at 11:08 AM ^
Man, YTM's peak might have been relatively short but it was really high.
February 6th, 2024 at 12:00 PM ^
All college programs are technically tied with exactly zero appearances in the Super Bowl, so yeah, we lead the all-time list. . . but so does everyone else.
