Jim and John Harbaugh coaching tree is sprouting
MacDonald to be the youngest NFL coach. Seahawks are getting a good one.
A youth movement in Seattle: Seahawks are expected to hire Ravens’ defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as their new head coach, league sources tell ESPN. They’re still finalizing the deal, but Seattle has its man.

You love to see it. I think Seattle going back to its defensive roots is awesome. And another branch of the tree to raid is great too.
Edit- also what a great pitch his trajectory is for us. "We hired this position coach, and got him to the NFL and in a HC spot by age 36 2 years later."

Couldnt agree more IF the dude responsible for hiring him was still around. Not sure Moore or the program itself can take credit for that one.
January 31st, 2024 at 2:12 PM ^
They can without too much of a stretch. And they should.
January 31st, 2024 at 2:48 PM ^
Moore is a direct continuity hire from the Harbaugh tree, so I think it's legit. This wouldn't be like Rich Rod taking credit for something that happened under Lloyd.
January 31st, 2024 at 3:04 PM ^
Meh, agree to disagree. Moore can absolutely still say this program did that, these players did that, these coaches did that. Doubt anyone is gonna retort "but did you personally hire him? 🤓"
January 31st, 2024 at 1:28 PM ^
I hope it works out well for him. They're a solid team, but seem to have upper management issues considering what happened to Carroll. MacDonald is a great coach so he should do well. I'll be rooting for his success against every team except the Lions and Chargers...
January 31st, 2024 at 1:29 PM ^
Do John and Jim fight for who gets Minter lol?
January 31st, 2024 at 1:51 PM ^
The simplest and most accurate thing would be to just call it the Jack Harbaugh coaching tree.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:30 PM ^
Curious why nobody in the NFL trying to hire Ryan Day.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:33 PM ^
I'll be your source that says they are, all of them, guy is in high demand and will definitely be leaving any day now with his whole staff and NIL dollars. Feel free to write a bunch of articles about
January 31st, 2024 at 1:50 PM ^
I've heard a rumor that every NFL owner is looking to bring Day onto their staff - either as head coach or GM.
There's an additional aspect of this. Several owners are rumored to have said (as they were enjoying a cup of coffee at a recent NFL soiree) - "I'd be willing to pay a bigger buyout than Texas A&M did for Jimbo if I could have Ryan Day as part of my organization. I'd give him carte blanche - and, would pay him at least twice as much as the Spanos' have signed Harbaugh for."
January 31st, 2024 at 1:34 PM ^
Because "I don't know is on third base"...
January 31st, 2024 at 1:43 PM ^
Because the NFL can smell a loser from miles away. They don't care about someone who can recruit high school kids. They want proven, smart X's and O;s guys who can also find really good assistant coaches. Third Base is all about the mountain of money behind him and buying mercenaries.
January 31st, 2024 at 2:07 PM ^
And no one knows what Day is when the rosters are more or less a level playing field. Yeah you can beat Purdue 63-6 with a bunch of NFL players but that doesnt mean much. Aside from the fact that Day doesnt exactly strike me as a leader of men with his penguin hopping
January 31st, 2024 at 2:19 PM ^
I'm sure you're being sarcastic, but I honestly had wondered that, at least previously (his star has fallen a bit the past year or two). If you had asked me ~2019-2021, I would have thought he and Lincoln Riley would be about the two most likely coaches to jump from college to the NFL, as they both fit the young, offensive minded mold the NFL seemed to be going to. I certainly feel like Day would have had a better case than a Kliff Kingsbury, etc...
January 31st, 2024 at 2:41 PM ^
Guys that do penguin dances with soft teams don’t coach in the NFL.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:31 PM ^
God, Minter's an old man at 40. Didn't realize how young MacDonald is. Curious to see if Seattle takes a hard look at JJ. Can't see hitching your wagon long term to Geno Smith despite how nice of a comeback he's had
January 31st, 2024 at 1:43 PM ^
Paying 34 year old Geno Smith 65M for the next two years or JJ (or another qb at 16) for 4 years and 16M total. NFL teams do love paying mediocre QBs a lot of money though.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:31 PM ^
We don't think Macdonald will try to pull anyone from our staff?
January 31st, 2024 at 1:51 PM ^
I'm more worried about another potential competitor for our open DC spot, now Ravens guys can be DC in Seattle, Baltimore or here this year
January 31st, 2024 at 2:43 PM ^
Everytime a Ravens groomed defensive coach gets promoted it thins our candidate pool.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:33 PM ^
On a side note, I keep checking Michigan Football's coaching page and, so far, they have not removed Minter. Maybe the webmaster wants to wait until all the changes are made so s/he can make the changes in one fell swoop.
AND wait...there's more.
Could Michigan then have a pipeline not just from the Raven and Chargers but also from the Seahawks?
January 31st, 2024 at 1:41 PM ^
I think some of it is just waiting till it's all official to make updates. We know for instance that Newsom is offensive line coach and that's not reflected on the website.
I think in the long run it helps us have multiple NFL pipelines, but in the short term it means we are all competing for coaches at the same time.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:52 PM ^
I wouldn't count on a pipeline, but I see no reason that one (or multiple) couldn't possibly exist. Sherrone and McDonald might've gotten along really well during Mike's single year at Michigan. Mike could look back on that year and see the value of one of his people coaching in the minor league.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:33 PM ^
I am happy for MacDonald, but doesn't this potentially seem bad for Michigan? Since there appear to be a limited number of people who know the Ravens' defense, it seems like it will be harder for us to keep running the scheme if any more defensive coaches leave. If both Clink and Elston leave, it seems like it will be impossible to keep it going. MacDonald is certainly going to bring Ravens' staff defensive with him. JH is trying to build the same thing in LA. John needs to now plug holes in Balt (Oor as DC perhaps?). Who would Michigan have left to hire? We need to open the checkbook to keep our defensive coaches here or we'll lose some key players too.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:42 PM ^
Orrrrrrr, since they are all branching out they will all have new understudies that we can hire who know their system. Think positively!
January 31st, 2024 at 1:59 PM ^
I hope. I have no idea how deep the talent pool that knows the Ravens' D is. Maybe there are many guys out there.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:49 PM ^
Having your lower level guys go get experience coordinating at a place that isn't actively trying to beat you knowing that you'll more than likely have to replace your own coordinators every 1-3 years seems like a solid plan to me.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:36 PM ^
My guess is that Minter is either headed to Baltimore or Seattle. Hopefully John can one more coordinator our way for old times sake.
Edit: or the Chargers
January 31st, 2024 at 1:39 PM ^
I thought he was already going to LA with Jim Harbaugh?
January 31st, 2024 at 2:01 PM ^
I looked and there is nothing official. No contract signed. Suddenly he has three jobs to choose from. Minter is now the hottest DC on the market.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:39 PM ^
It would be "interesting" to see Macdonald steal Minter from Jim.
January 31st, 2024 at 2:49 PM ^
Works for me. Justice for stealing Herbert. Jim will just end up poaching Clink or Elston though and fuck us even more.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:39 PM ^
Good for Macdonald but makes it harder to the extent we are trying to hire someone for the Ravens tree as now there are NFL DC openings in both Baltimore and Seattle. I assume for instance that Zach Orr gets one of them and the other goes to someone like Anthony Weaver (who has himself had some NFL DC interviews already).
January 31st, 2024 at 1:44 PM ^
When one Ravens coach is elevated or leaves then they hire someone low level and new to learn the system, I think that 3 different NFL teams running the system will just give us more candidates down the road. Hopefully Clink picked up the scheme and can coach it close to the same level, for the short term.
January 31st, 2024 at 2:52 PM ^
It's a gift that just keeps giving.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:39 PM ^
Wonder what Raven Assistants will go with him or be promoted to DC now. Assuming Moore was even talking to Orr, I would think this could change things for him potentially.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:53 PM ^
Wouldn't the Ravens have to permit something like that for guys who are under contract?
January 31st, 2024 at 1:41 PM ^
Awesome. Can't wait for them to draft JJ.
January 31st, 2024 at 2:12 PM ^
Knowing Schneider's tendencies, it will probably be Penix Jr. in the second round.
January 31st, 2024 at 4:14 PM ^
As of now, I don't think they have a second round pick. They have the #16 overall. So, they either take somebody there or make a trade.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:51 PM ^
If a NFL team believes the risk is worth it in taking a DC and making him a first time head coach, I think this should give us a bit more confidence in the risk Michigan is taking in making their OC coach into a first time head coach.

January 31st, 2024 at 2:10 PM ^
I actually see far more Buckeyes desperately clinging to that narrative than MSU fans. I think its the only thing letting your average OSU fan sleep at night
January 31st, 2024 at 2:23 PM ^
49-0 ass whooping will mute most of your comments.
January 31st, 2024 at 2:25 PM ^
As delusional as MSU fans are, they don't think Stalions is the reason they lost the last two years. And they beat us in 2021. OSU fans legit think the last three years were stolen from them, and also simultaneously want to fire Day.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:52 PM ^
Pretty meteoric rise for Mike. Probably no available “next up” Ravens defensive coach available for Michigan after this.
January 31st, 2024 at 1:55 PM ^
Ravens vs Chargers @ SoFi sometime this coming season.
January 31st, 2024 at 2:06 PM ^
Then that means the ravens take the next best amoeba d coach. One less for us. Now more likely we change schemes with the new DC coach.
