Former 4 star Michigan Target Jameer Grimsley enters portal
6-3 corner out of Tampa that we were in on before Bama got him. 4 star, 189th in the composite, would be a welcome addition to the CB room.

Big fan of your username. It's always nice to meet one of my fans.

Upvoted the only opportunity you'll have to use this line.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:22 AM ^
So he's going to UGA or OSU
Ole Miss backup
We aren't paying recruits or unproven transfers.
Our recruiting problems pre-NIL have actually gotten worse post-NIL.
Not sure how much longer we can win on development and culture, specifically with bidding wars going on every year for all players on rosters, not just incoming freshmen.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:49 AM ^
If we keep the status-quo of how we operate, it will probably be a 4 or 5 year gap between really great years like this one. It will be having back to back classes hitting and retaining and also landing a quality QB in those classes is most important. Sort of like how the ‘20, ‘21, and ‘22 classes aligned so well and we had our QB and a lot of players sticking around.
January 19th, 2024 at 11:13 AM ^
I share your concerns. The last three years were a master class in talent evaluation and player development, but at some point the raw talent disparity between us and the top 10 programs will come back to bite us.
We need to start winning some of these NIL battles.
January 19th, 2024 at 11:16 AM ^
The last three years roster were built on recruiting pre NIL. It's only gotten worse.
January 19th, 2024 at 2:29 PM ^
Transfer portal also filled some important positions, which alleviated the effect of missing on some recruits.
January 19th, 2024 at 12:57 PM ^
I agree with this sentiment
January 19th, 2024 at 10:23 AM ^
Bama is leaking players.
I don't think this happens to us if Harbaugh leaves, especially if Moore is HC.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:27 AM ^
Seems like the implication is this would not happen to us as long as Sherrone is made HC. I think Sam maybe implied there could be an exodus if it's not Moore.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:30 AM ^
true of most coaching changes when assistant staff isn't retained...
January 19th, 2024 at 10:35 AM ^
That's right. If Lance Leipold gets hired over Moore why would these guys not take big ole checks and go elsewhere for a year?
It's basically the same concept - they're playing for a guy they do not know.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:38 AM ^
Most of our key talent on offense is already gone. The key factor is: can Sherrone's presence keep the defensive talent around? That was not his side of the ball, but he may still have a strong relationship with those guys.
It is imperative to keep that defense together.
January 19th, 2024 at 11:25 AM ^
Ok, just to think this through logically. Not making any predictions here, certainly not saying any are our best options or that they'd even be interested, but... what if UM replaced JMFH with, say... Vrabel? Carroll? Leipold? Do we really "leak recruits"? Especially those with NFL HC experience.
January 19th, 2024 at 11:37 AM ^
Mike Vrabel is an NFL guy and an OSU guy. Even if he doesn't get an NFL job this year, he probably has his eyes set on OSU if Day gets canned or decides to move on. Carroll is 72 years old and hasn't coached in college in almost 2 decades. No thanks.
January 19th, 2024 at 11:56 AM ^
Thinking it through logically, the rational move for every player after a coaching change is to re-open their market. They retain a valuable call option (return to the school) because the new coach will be desperate to retain as many players as possible, so they have an opportunity to re-assess their market value for free.
January 19th, 2024 at 1:20 PM ^
Any coach not named Prime would be desperate to retain players
January 19th, 2024 at 7:37 PM ^
Not sure why the negs….although I don’t follow posting history so maybe you made some enemies.
I think your point is well taken though. There are some really quality PROVEN head coaches out there. Carroll for example: national championship, Super Bowl, excellent offensive and defensive coach, and how old would you think he is if you didn’t know? Even if he coaches for another 5-7 years, I still think that’s a much higher floor than hiring Moore. You could argue that Moore would provide stability to our current players, but other than that, you can’t say he can match any of those other applicants on any other accomplishments. Other than being younger. Even if Moore turns out to be the real thing, you really think he isn’t gone for the NFL in less than 5 years?
January 19th, 2024 at 11:54 AM ^
I highly doubt it'd be anyone other than Moore, after this culture that has been built. Would be too risky at this point to risk wrecking it, even for Jeff Brohm, who I think is a great coach.
January 19th, 2024 at 1:32 PM ^
No more Saban NIL discount, Bama NIL has to pay up or lose players. Entering portal can just be a renegotiation tactic.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:27 AM ^
I generally assume any transfer coming out of the SEC is looking for a check to transfer and that means we're not a real option. Shrug.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:35 AM ^
That's on us. We have as much money as anybody.
We should not assume that just because Harbaugh's coaching regime could develop 3-stars into National Champions that the next coaching regime can do it.
At some point we are going to need to replace guys like JJ and Will Johnson with similar 5-star talent guys. We're not going to get it done without some of those kinds of guys on the roster.
And like it or not, these days you have to purchase those guys.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:36 AM ^
On the one hand, yes, and we need to get better in this space for sure.
On the other hand, I don't think I WANT to go full Ole Miss where every guy is just there for the check.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:41 AM ^
Yeah, there is a balance. But not wanting to be Ole Miss does not mean we can get away with being Dartmouth.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:47 AM ^
Truth!!!!
January 19th, 2024 at 4:10 PM ^
I'm not sure it's as much a money thing as much as it is a culture thing. The program has great culture right now. Bringing in a bunch of guys just here for a check is not good for your team chemistry imo
January 19th, 2024 at 10:48 AM ^
I don't follow SEC trends, but with Saban retiring a lot of podcasts have mentioned that players came to Bama at a discount due to name recognition and NFL draft potential. Without Saban that is gone so those that leave Bama are expecting a higher salary and an easy road to the NFL. So places like Georgia, Texas, maybe even Miami will land more than Michigan.
January 19th, 2024 at 11:20 AM ^
I've been wondering what Bama is doing to try and keep these players. I know if this was an Alabama board, we'd be screaming about our NIL approach. If they are paying the new coach $12M/yr, you'd think they would put money into keeping the key players.
January 19th, 2024 at 7:41 PM ^
They are probably also looking for a coach. Let’s figure that one out first, then worry about NIL.
Did anyone leave the faucet dripping at schembechler hall? Don’t want those pipes to freeze.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:51 PM ^
Yeah but it looks like osu is willing to do so - shrug?
January 19th, 2024 at 10:31 AM ^
If he is not a mercenary than welcome him in.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:40 AM ^
I hope that your boss doesn't feel the same way... im sure you work for free too? We have a mindset that these kids should want to play football for the purity and joy of the sport. Its nice when guys have that mindset, like Corum etc.. but corum still is getting paid.
Calling them mercenaries makes it sound like they are only motivated by money. But there are a TON of schools offering money, so in fact, its not just about money, money is a given in most places.. its what else do you have. We aren't in the game because we're not giving money up front. They say nice things about us, but don't pick us because we haven't ante'd up
January 19th, 2024 at 10:44 AM ^
Switching jobs multiple times in three years to chase a higher paycheck each time will get you shunned in most industries. A mercenary is a mercenary.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:49 AM ^
It might, but your professional career isn't capped at 4-5 years. So wanting the most of every year isn't greedy or insane
January 19th, 2024 at 7:21 PM ^
Reading skills were the first casualty culturally speaking. Nice to see you get it.
January 20th, 2024 at 9:58 PM ^
But it’s the only way to get pay increases that exceed cost of living increases, generally. That’s why job hopping is so common - it’s incentivized.
For most people (since these days, getting a 4-5% or greater pay increase annually isn’t all that common), every year they stay with a given employer, their standard of living diminishes. The extent to which employees are shunned for making smart moves is indicative of cartel behavior. Do shareholders get shunned for trading stocks regularly?
January 19th, 2024 at 1:44 PM ^
Some guys take less up front and get stock options (future NIL and NFL futures). It's not wrong to focus on those guys.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:43 AM ^
It's not mercenary to take the bag.
Mercenary is going somewhere just for the biggest bag, and nothing else.
There are plenty of schools offering competitive NIL packages, and there are plenty of talented recruits and transfers choosing the best situation (combo of university, staff, development, compensation)
UM needs to add "bag" to their offering to be competitive and attractive to recruits and transfers.
January 19th, 2024 at 11:42 AM ^
Corum has long been driving around campus in a maize and blue camaflouged mustang with the money he has bagged. We have bag, but our approach continues to be to use it for the players that earn it. At some point we need to add a one time signing bonus approach, we have a big enough pool and really have no excuse not to play that game. Signing bonus are normal in most industries with people who have extraordinary skill and are in demand. This is no different and not an ethical conundrum as some would make this out to be. If we think players are being fickle and leaving after such program is set in place, then you structure it in a way you start doing incentives or triggers that happen after sticking with the program. You can still run a program that doesn't induce mercenary types, because you have due diligence and controls in place to avoid it happening en masse. Its weird that we immediately blame kids for being "mercenary" instead of the schools who just can't run a normal business model right. Just like great companies, a great university sports program like Michigan's in the NIL era, should be able to dominate and retain talent without losing culture or its identify.
January 19th, 2024 at 2:43 PM ^
A "signing bonus" is an improper inducement, at least as the NIL rules are written. Imagine the NCAA adding that to its vendetta against Michigan and Harbaugh.
January 20th, 2024 at 10:03 PM ^
It needs to be part of the repertoire. A lot of players are turned off by the fact that they’re actually expected to show up to class periodically and post decent grades. We can’t give them another reason to say “no” or we’re a non-starter
January 19th, 2024 at 10:44 AM ^
Problem is, Harbaugh is doing more harm then anyone thinks. Alabama just had a 5 star qb enter the portal. They won't come to MI if we don't know who the coach will be. If Jim leaves players will have 30 day to leave, no matter the time of year.
Does Jim truly love his school?
January 19th, 2024 at 10:46 AM ^
He's not coming to Michigan even if Harbaugh comes back. Maybe if Harbaugh had resigned earlier and we landed DeBoer has our head coach, but then again this player is transferring out of DeBoers offense, so no. This player wasn't cut from our clothe.
January 19th, 2024 at 12:39 PM ^
While it's unlikely that Michigan picks up guys currently in the portal no matter the circumstances, Harbaugh's current NFL interest certainly does remove significant opportunities to land any transfers at all.
Just because Michigan can't bring in an Alabama kid because of NIL reasons doesn't mean Harbaugh isn't also dragging those chances down as well.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:44 AM ^
Michigan wont be a destination for any of these players unless they can clearly state who will be the coach next season.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:44 AM ^
We need someone to help cover Isaiah Bond now that Wallace is gone.
January 19th, 2024 at 10:53 AM ^
I feel like these transfer portal posts are mostly chances for us to complain about our NIL program or the antiquated admission standards for transfers.
We've had some luck, but for every Hauserman, there's 10 Domani's that go to an SEC school. At least most are not going to other B1G schools.
January 19th, 2024 at 11:01 AM ^
Except for the 3-4 and counting going to Ohio St?
