I dont see the point. Michigan has already moved on with other kids in the 23 and 24 class that are similar projects. And it's not like he got any development in Miami so he's still at square 1
December 31st, 2023 at 3:40 PM ^
kid was chasing the bag...like Nolan. No reason to think that has changed with this next school.
Michigan, rightly or wrongly, doesn't offer them like other schools will, so I doubt they would pursue.
December 31st, 2023 at 3:42 PM ^
Did'nt he have a bad home situation and needed the $$?
Thought that is why ended up chasing it and decommitting
December 31st, 2023 at 3:47 PM ^
I have no problem with kids if they want to pursue getting paid - more power to him. I think the NCAA should be paying players.
Under the current system and AD however, Michigan does not front money to get kids to commit; their NIL kicks in when you are in school.
If the kid needs up front money, then he should go after it. Just saying Michigan does not (currently) do that and won't pursue him if that is what he is looking for
December 31st, 2023 at 7:43 PM ^
Michigan doesn't offer recruits because the Michigan NIL law (and NCAA regs) prohibit that. I'm not sure the Michigan legislature will go ahead and challenge the NCAA like some of the other state legislatures and basically place their football programs outside NCAA jurisdiction on NIL (or many of the NCAA's sanctions).
December 31st, 2023 at 10:34 PM ^
So it's Michigan law now that's prohibiting Michigan from paying 5 star recruits? Not sure I've heard that one before.
I figured Michigan wasn't paying recruits because it cost money.
It's going to be an interesting case study to see if Michigan's way works. We won't truly know until JJ's class is gone or maybe even Will Johnson's class....2025 at earliest.
Looking down the road at very few top 100 players does scare the shit out of me but as long as we retain Jim Harbaugh I think it will work. I think Michigan agrees considering the 10/125k report which hopefully gets the job done.

No offense, but this--to me--epitomizes the somewhat schizoid attitude we all share about the kids, NIL, and portal. On the one hand, we're pissed off that Michigan doesn't do it more or better, on the other we're proud that it doesn't. On one hand we celebrate it as glorious capitalism incarnate, on the other we deride kids as 'only looking for the bag.' The coaches can take a hard look at promising players and decide, I guess. If and when he enters the Michigan fold, we'll all assume he must be okay. :)
December 31st, 2023 at 4:32 PM ^
I have zero problems with kids chasing the bag..it just sucks cause we dont get the players we truly want...I wish UM was more aggressive
And, I would have no problems with us pursuing ..maybe he earned enough money and realized hey, this is not where I want to be and now I want to learn to be a football player and he can earn our NIL the way it is currently
January 1st, 2024 at 9:41 AM ^
We? Let’s not use “we” in a way that combines Coach Harbaugh and his staff with fan desires. Fans have different rankings than the coaching staff, while fans are beholden to the recruiting website blogger and reporters.
Yes, getting more 5 star guys would be lovely, but I’m pretty sure a lot of guys they are 4 stars in Rivals have been seen as 5 stars by Jim and company. But I’m pretty sure they were happy to get guys like Mason, Kenneth, and Rod Moore and didn’t think they were settling. Or Semaj Morgan. Or Loveland.
Ladd McConkey is a ball player. He’s Georgia’s top WR when Bowers is out—and right there when he plays.
I personally prefer 4 star guys that aren’t going to bail after one or two years if they aren’t starting than to go to the portal for projects. Michigan is using the portal to get players who’ve shown they can get on the field, not guys chasing quick cash and an easy path to PT. That’s how you build chemistry.
Dudes on the current team know they aren’t getting replaced in the two-deep unless that incoming dude earns it on the field.

Do individuals hold these contradictory views, or do different people within the fanbase have different opinions?
December 31st, 2023 at 5:19 PM ^
well, maybe its the nature of text on a messageboard, as there is no context.
I am not proud that Michigan doesn't offer up front payments, simply that this is a statement of fact as we understand it - what I 'feel' doesn't change this. Michigan does not offer up front pay for play.
"Chasing the bag" can be seen as a slight, so that's fair comment. Changing that to "the kid is looking for up front money" however is a difference without distinction. Sure the former can be read as slightly pejorative, but is not less factual than the latter.
Michigan should be paying players, and would be if the NCAA allowed it. Ironically, Michigan feels beholden to follow the NCAA guidelines, even though said institution has demonstrated that they apply those rules inconsistently and that it seems to make little difference purely based on the guidlines and is more dependent on subjective application of those rules based on who is breaking them.
December 31st, 2023 at 5:32 PM ^
Tangentially related to your response here, I noticed two comments below chastising people here in general for stating that chasing the bag = bad character. In truth, there are only two comments that suggest this ITT at the time of posting this. Most people are not saying that. The idea that MGoBoard posters are criticizing kids for taking the upfront money is way overstated IMO. It is, as you noted, simply a statement of fact as to what kids are doing and what Michigan is doing.
December 31st, 2023 at 8:33 PM ^
Yeah I’m not going to get into the “bad character” debate. I know for me personally, especially with my situation growing up, getting an up front 6-7 figure offer as a 17 year old would have been life changing for both myself and my immediate family. I’m not going to criticize anyone for taking the bag when it’s offered. As critical as some people want to be about it, 90% of us are taking 6 figures at 17-18 years old.
BUT there is a fine line between players getting paid and programs buying players. What Texas A&M and Miami are doing does not work. I’d much rather have Michigan’s current approach and get guys who WANT to be at Michigan. Where I’d like to see the change is a willingness to use that financial aspect to tip the scales with guys who want to be here but are getting enticing offers elsewhere.
December 31st, 2023 at 5:54 PM ^
I totally agree.
And not trying to get too political, but this is part of a larger problem with society. People are slammed from every angle. Yes, we all need to save money and be responsible, but I literally get at least one credit card or personal loan offer in the mail every single day. We are constantly hammered with ads to spend more money and get into debt. So when many people do get into debt, we all act like it's their personal problem, when really it's a very well orchestrated systematic effort to drive people into debt.
Some of us aren't really aware of that, and so we do it to these kids.
How dare they go to the school that offers them the most money today! But if they find themselves broke after choosing the university their heart desired, nobody is out there trying to help them. They're just bums who couldn't make it to the league and they have to figure out how to navigate an economy that is wholly designed to drive them into debt for life.

Former Michigan committ. 6”7 270 Edge from California for those wondering. Class of 23 was a hooper as well is HS. He will not come to Michigan in my opinion.
December 31st, 2023 at 3:43 PM ^
Lmao. Got that bag for his family and dipped. Tbh I wouldn’t be against taking him. He’s got a great frame to build off of
December 31st, 2023 at 4:18 PM ^
Character is a big part of why Michigan has been able to do what is has done with somewhat lesser talent than its biggest rival. I don’t think anyone who makes their choice based on getting “that bag,” and then quickly bails on the school that provided said bag, is the kind of guy Michigan wants.
December 31st, 2023 at 4:27 PM ^
I get what you’re saying but at the same time there’s also the possibility that a player regrets being swayed by the bag and now wants a place to be developed
December 31st, 2023 at 4:47 PM ^
Agreed here. Spend a year at a school throwing money at you to get your family out of a bad situation, then transfer where you want to go to get developed. I imagine these NIL deals are 6 figures, which would be hard to say no to especially if that's life-changing money for your family.
December 31st, 2023 at 6:00 PM ^
So you’re fine with people whose only consideration should be what’s in it for me?
December 31st, 2023 at 6:18 PM ^
You know what those people are called? Rich.
Nothing else really matters anymore in this country, so I don't fault anybody for getting paid while they can.
December 31st, 2023 at 6:36 PM ^
I’m sorry your experiences have led you to the mistaken belief that getting rich is all that matters, but I don’t think that’s the kind of player Michigan is looking for or the kind of player they’ve built their success on.
December 31st, 2023 at 6:30 PM ^
Lol. I'm sure every decision you made as a late teen was completely about helping others.
Besides, what if "what's in for me" is getting to be a part of a solid team, getting great coaching, training and prep for the NFL, and plenty of academic assistance and tutoring to earn a degree from a world-renowned university?
I hope you have fun on your inane moral high ground.
January 1st, 2024 at 9:58 AM ^
You have a problem with a person maximizing their earning potential?
Separate moral character from football character. I’m okay with Michigan not going after kids who need the bag or make it their priority, because they may be more likely to flame out. That’s the only reason. These kids MAY be more about earning while they can.
But let me be clear—that is not a moral failing of the player. They aren’t inherently selfish or morally more questionable in character. Having grown up in abject poverty myself, incompletely get those young men who see quick money as a way to get out of poverty.
Yet, being impoverished and wanting money can instill in some guys the kind of “I will prove it on the field” mentality or the “You have seen my HS resume and my skills, so pay me if you want me to put myself at harm for you.” I’ll take the former player first for team chemistry and success, but Michigan fans often get themselves into the land of Hypocrisy when such talk is built with arrogance of moral superiority or “better” character.
Every single young man who plays D1 football is on a see-saw of ego-humility, and a lot of time decisions that factor into the imbalance is family class background.
December 31st, 2023 at 4:49 PM ^
It was reported last year he mostly needed the NIL to support his family. In what world is providing for your family a character concern?
December 31st, 2023 at 6:40 PM ^
Taking the money isn’t, but absent unusual circumstances, I think taking the money should come with some obligation to the program that was willing to give it to you.
December 31st, 2023 at 7:11 PM ^
You have utterly bonkers expectations about the maturity and decision-making of 17 and 18-year-old kids. I don't even think there are many players on Michigan's current roster who would live up to them if you saw the entire process.
December 31st, 2023 at 8:42 PM ^
The NCAA doesn't want that because that would mean a contract that would unequivocally make the students employees. Once that happens, it's only a matter of time before a players union and collective bargaining begins.
Using NIL as the only way that students get paid, they pass off the whole amateurism angle and continue to keep all the TV revenue.
December 31st, 2023 at 11:58 PM ^
This is true, however the NCAA needs to clarify what NIL is because because for many schools it's flat out pay to play.
