George Helow hired by Alabama
December 14th, 2023 at 9:32 PM ^
I look at this as a good sign. Saban watched a week's worth of tape and realized he needs help.
December 14th, 2023 at 10:29 PM ^
but only after Partridge turned him down
December 14th, 2023 at 6:03 PM ^
I'm guessing he was probably given a one game contract.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:58 PM ^
Yeah, but sending some kid with a cellphone to the (checks notes) CMU game is the biggest scandal in college football history.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:03 PM ^
Gee, I wonder why?
December 14th, 2023 at 9:56 PM ^
It sucks, but it's a genius coaching move. Saban knows all the tricks.
December 15th, 2023 at 5:22 AM ^
Got that right. This mofo has probably already signed over his soul for one last national championship. I’m not worried about how we match up as much as I am about Saban having a month to prepare.
December 15th, 2023 at 6:08 PM ^
You think he still has a soul?
December 14th, 2023 at 6:03 PM ^
But remember Connor Stallions is a cheater
December 14th, 2023 at 6:04 PM ^
Anyone got Pete Thamel’s number?
December 14th, 2023 at 6:32 PM ^
1-800-877-CRAP-NOW....
CRAP NOW!
December 14th, 2023 at 6:41 PM ^
Curious how all of his sources went silent after the OSU game
December 14th, 2023 at 7:17 PM ^
Ryan Day has it.
December 15th, 2023 at 5:23 AM ^
He’s like fucking beetle juice. Say “vast network” 3 times and the little asshole will just appear.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:06 PM ^
Wow, what a coincidence!
December 14th, 2023 at 6:07 PM ^
I'm sure his time at Michigan is purely a coincidence.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:09 PM ^
Michigan should reconsider playing Alabama then. You know, out of concern for player safety and all.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:34 PM ^
Or, we should just kill them even harder
December 14th, 2023 at 8:11 PM ^
Let Murder Wolf loose in their locker room.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:12 PM ^
A weirdo, glorified intern deciphering shitty iPhone footage from 100+ feet away? Awful breach of sportsmanship. A danger to players.
Literally hiring a professional coach that knows everything about your upcoming opponent because he recently coached there, removing all need for deciphering anything? A-Ok. Totally safe for the players, lol. No danger at all. "The right way" to obtain all the signals that can put players in danger.
It all makes sense.
December 15th, 2023 at 12:49 PM ^
Quick, somebody put this on the Drake meme so we can send it out to social media pronto!
December 14th, 2023 at 6:14 PM ^
Are we not worried about the safety of Michigan's players?
December 14th, 2023 at 6:17 PM ^
Alright Tony Thimblecondom! Now's your big chance to show the world how principled you really are!
December 14th, 2023 at 6:18 PM ^
Great, now we're going to have to deal with Alabama's vast network
December 14th, 2023 at 6:20 PM ^
I am Jack’s complete lack of surprise.
December 14th, 2023 at 7:34 PM ^
I think I’m gonna have to be Jack’s colon on this one
December 14th, 2023 at 6:20 PM ^
That was convenient of them. Hmmm not trying to get in on stealing signs or something?
December 14th, 2023 at 6:22 PM ^
Honestly this should not be allowed by the NCAA and Michigan should protest it. They can hire him but he can't have any contact with staff or anyone else until after the game. That would only be fair.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:26 PM ^
Not really sure how this could even be allowed. Kinda bullshit
December 14th, 2023 at 6:35 PM ^
How could you disallow a team from hiring a coach that was let go 2 years ago?
December 14th, 2023 at 6:48 PM ^
He was let go in February if I’m not mistaken.
December 14th, 2023 at 9:35 PM ^
What's the difference? He didn't coach at Michigan this year.
December 14th, 2023 at 9:50 PM ^
...two years, ten months, what's the difference?
uh, 14 months? or is this a trick question
December 14th, 2023 at 10:43 PM ^
You know where else he didn't coach this year? Alabama.
December 15th, 2023 at 1:28 PM ^
The difference is the timing of the hire. Hire a former Michigan coach 3 weeks or less before a playoff game. What role is he exactly taking? I wouldn't care if they hired him 2 months ago because they wouldn't know they were playing Michigan then but they hired him after knowing Michigan is their next opening in the biggest game of the year so far.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:28 PM ^
This is another reason in my long list of why I hate Nick Saban.
Does anyone know if George Helow has been working anywhere else since he left Michigan in February 2023? My quick Google search did not show any jobs listed for him since he left Michigan.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:49 PM ^
I’m fairly sure he hasn’t. I looked it into last month when Partridge was fired.
December 14th, 2023 at 8:16 PM ^
Yep, he was let go so Michigan could bring in Partidge, so you know Helow is going to have a very personal grudge to address in this game.
December 14th, 2023 at 8:58 PM ^
I mean, this obviously further exposes the stupidity of the SignGate outrage, but it would be pretty soft to get upset at Saban/Helow for this. We fired Helow to hire a new LB coach. He took a new job when the opportunity arose. Fair. Beat Bama.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:28 PM ^
And this isn't advanced scouting? It doesn't violate sportsmanship rules?
Bama is skeered
December 14th, 2023 at 6:30 PM ^
This is a little shady. The only thing that makes this slightly less eyebrow-raising is Helow worked under MacDonald and not Minter. The defense should be different enough nowadays that Helow's intel won't be super helpful to Alabama's game planning. But still, this is annoying.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:37 PM ^
Except he did work under Minter…..
Helow only left UM last offseason.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:43 PM ^
I stand corrected then. OK well this becomes a lot more shady then.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:37 PM ^
No, this isn't true. He worked for McDonald for a year and for Minter for a year.
He was fired in like February of *THIS* year.
December 14th, 2023 at 7:18 PM ^
I thought it was interesting in the Super Bowl, Siriani & the Eagles hired DC Vic Fangio to help them with a gameplan to stop the Mahomes offense. Probably because the Broncos under Fangio always played the Chiefs really tough on the defensive side.
Obviously didn't work in the end for the Eagles, but it was probably helpful. But that's the NFL, where you've got high-end talent at every position. This is our own former LB coach who's been away from the team for less than a full year. If we're looking for actual rules that affect the "competitive balance" of the game, then this should be right at the top of the list for the NCAA. Not cheeseburgers in paradise & rando's with iphones.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:31 PM ^
Not even remotely a coincidence……
And yet somehow, what Connor Stallions did from the stands is a stain on the integrity of the game, and Michigan should be punished to the highest possible degree. But Saban going and hiring a former Michigan coach two weeks before they're set to play, a professional who coached for Saban's very next opponent, who’s been around all the Michigan players and knows next to everything about them, is totally cool and not at all a breach of sportsmanship.
If you want to hire Helow that’s fine, but in a fair world he wouldn’t be allowed to have any contact with the Alabama staff or players until after the Rose Bowl. You know, if the NCAA really gave a shit about sportsmanship, fair play, and the sanctity of the game.
