OT: State of Florida Going After CFP
Florida is amazing in so many ways. This is not one of them - The State A.G. has decided to be a silly person and go after the CFP via the courts. https://twitter.com/AGAshleyMoody/status/1734683110363807769
This is clearly silly (I can't overuse that word in this context) political posturing, but some FSU law alum types I'm friends with down here have said that despite the politicking aspect, it's actually about the lost revenue from not being selected. I haven issue with that for a few reasons:
- It's a shakedown at best, because nothing will be actionable for remedy other than a payout
- It sets a bad precedent
- It's another lens into college football being nothing more than a state-run business, concerned more about revenue than anything else
But I am also a cynic.

“Florida Man sues NCAA for poor judgment.”
December 12th, 2023 at 9:14 PM ^
If this were true, the line outside the NCAA offices would be huge.. and, Mark Emmert would have more time in court than Judges Judy or Wapner.
I would love for the CFP Selection Committee deliberations being available via a broadcast..
December 13th, 2023 at 12:45 AM ^
I thought it was Charlie Baker. Emmert left the town I believe.
December 12th, 2023 at 11:12 PM ^
I’m glad Florida’s in such good shape, with absolutely no problems, that its AG has the time to devote to something so frivolous.
December 12th, 2023 at 11:29 PM ^
eh, probably the least awful thing she's done in a while
December 12th, 2023 at 11:31 PM ^
CFP is not part of the NCAA.

"Florida Man Sues NCAA -- Later Realizes He's Naked on the Interstate and Suing the Wrong Entity"
December 12th, 2023 at 9:17 PM ^
It's a cheap populist move that will go nowhere. And they'll forget all about it when FSU bolts the ACC for the SEC or the B1G. Orrin Hatch did the same thing in the BCS days when Utah was kept out of the NCG despite an 11-0 record (Utah was a member of the MWC then). Nothing came of that, and they forgot all about it when Utah was invited to join the Pac-12.
December 12th, 2023 at 9:35 PM ^
The revenue/money angle is interesting at the least. CFP deliberations being public record is interesting.
December 13th, 2023 at 10:04 AM ^
I find the money angle completely unpersuasive. "CFP didn't choose me as a business partner. Please pay me instead of or in addition to them."
December 13th, 2023 at 2:11 PM ^
The pursuit of money might be an attempt to offset the price they need to pay to leave the ACC.
"Well, we just got this bit of bonus money we can put toward getting out of here."
December 12th, 2023 at 9:19 PM ^
It seems designed to score political points for the AG, sure, but I have no problem with the CFP facing discovery requests. That is basically what this is.
December 12th, 2023 at 11:17 PM ^
They won’t face discovery requests when the complaint is dismissed for failing to state a proper legal claim.

IME, you can still move to quash these.
December 12th, 2023 at 9:31 PM ^
And so is the playoff committee, concerned more about revenue than anything else....
December 12th, 2023 at 9:34 PM ^
Edit: wrong thread.
December 12th, 2023 at 11:09 PM ^
And yet as cogent as the Florida AG’s comments.
December 12th, 2023 at 9:39 PM ^
despite the politicking aspect, it's actually about the lost revenue from not being selected.
I was under the impression that the money goes to the conference, which has it's own rules for dividing the money.
A CFP appearance pays out $6 million, while the Orange Bowl appearance pays out $4 million. If that were going straight to FSU, then it would be a significant loss of compensation.
December 12th, 2023 at 10:15 PM ^
A $2 million dollar difference isn’t really a significant loss of compensation in the scope of a major college program’s revenue. FSU generated $161 million in athletics revenue in the 2022 fiscal year for example. $2 million isn’t really a significant difference. That’s like a $600 annual difference for someone making $50k. Sure it’s “more” but what’re you really going to do making an extra $11.50 a week?
At any rate, I’d assume FSU would approach $2 million in legal fees even attempting to take this through the courts. So outside of political grandstanding and some saber rattling, I don’t get the point of all of this. I’m no lawyer, but I don’t see what legal ground they have to stand on. The CFP guidelines allow them to choose the participants based on their own opinions. Those guidelines allow for them to consider injuries in their deliberations. Seems pretty open and shut. Whether you agree with the decision or not, the CFP was within their rights to eliminate FSU from CFP consideration.
December 13th, 2023 at 7:01 AM ^
Didn't the ACC approve unequal revenue sharing this year? Exposure from making the CFP, merchandise sales would've been insane like it was for Michigan when they got to the CFP. And I've seen a story out there that ESPN benefitted from Bama over FSU by around $150 million, so somewhere there is more money at play potentially.
It's still all ridiculous.
December 13th, 2023 at 8:25 AM ^
A $2 million dollar difference isn’t really a significant loss of compensation in the scope of a major college program’s revenue.
Really? That might be the difference between either getting that 5 star QB or RB or settling for a 4 star.
December 13th, 2023 at 4:55 PM ^
Considering that $2 million dollars is athletic department revenue, which can’t be spent on NIL, it’s not the difference in recruiting a 5 star vs a 4 star.
December 14th, 2023 at 12:48 PM ^
Who really knows how that $2 million would be spent, but the CFP exposure for FSU may have cost them a recruit or two, and/or a "bagman" willing to contribute $$$ towards the NIL or otherwise...
Though, I find it humorous that the state of Florida wants to be compensated.
December 12th, 2023 at 9:49 PM ^
Wonder if they'll capitulate like bitches halfway thru too
December 12th, 2023 at 9:57 PM ^
I'm guessing that A.G. is running for election and looking for FSU alum/fan votes. It's pointless but will allow for the grandstanding press conferences local news people happily gobble up and regurgitate
December 12th, 2023 at 11:35 PM ^
What’s ironic is Ashley Moody is a Florida grad. Can you imagine an MSU alum suing the NCAA/CFP if Michigan got screwed? Hahahaha.
December 12th, 2023 at 11:57 PM ^
Other instate rivals are more level headed compared to Michigan State. Michigan is living rent free in every msu fan all hours of the day. And that’s it. There’s nothing else in their heads
December 13th, 2023 at 1:39 AM ^
FSU is definitely the little brother to UF's big brother. FSU was all-women's school until the 50s or something, so they got a late start on sports. FSU did win a national championship before FSU, so they're little brother more with respect their relative academic reputation.
December 13th, 2023 at 1:17 PM ^
You're living in the past a bit here but also not necessarily wrong. Right now, FSU is 18th and UF is 5th in the most recent US News public university rankings. Yeah, Florida is higher, but the "little brother" hierarchy that fits so perfectly in Michigan isn't so clear in Florida today with both being top 20 universities. The current state of athletics makes it even more level. Finally, any campus that has it's own Big Top circus, isn't a little brother to anybody in my eyes
December 13th, 2023 at 7:45 AM ^
Hmmm... Well, Michigan did get screwed by the B1G (and the NCAA, if we consider that they shared private data with all the B1G schools - except us) and MSU grads Gretchen Whitmer and Dana Nessle did not sue them.
So irony stands undefeated...
December 13th, 2023 at 8:57 AM ^
Nessel is a Michigan grad and Whitmer did make a statement of support. Michigan was already handling the process, so there was no need for the state to intervene. And Nessel and Whitmer are term limited, so they don't need to grandstand for cheap political points that are actually going nowhere.
December 13th, 2023 at 11:09 AM ^
Eh, neither of them are likely to vanish forever from electoral politics. Cheap political points are probably never a bad thing to have in your pocket down the road in that business. :)
December 12th, 2023 at 10:29 PM ^
Still pissed our state AG didn't go after the Big Ten for suspending Harbaugh
December 13th, 2023 at 9:02 AM ^
I'm not. Michigan was handling the situation and was in a much, much, much better position to handle it than the AG's office. This is a cheap political stunt meant to rile up the rubes for whatever her next electoral venture is. It will go no where and it will be removed to Court and quashed or the powers that be will tell her to pound sand and go enforce it in Court. It'll go no where there and she'll be able to say, "Well, I tried but the Courts blocked me" and absolve herself while getting brownie points.

Florida sucks. Never understood the love for that overpopulated swamp.
December 12th, 2023 at 11:09 PM ^
I’m not sure either but it’s probably got a shared upstream cause with the popularity of Subway restaurants, Keurig coffee makers, and reality tv shows
December 13th, 2023 at 7:29 AM ^
I’ve never gone to Florida and left without having an amazing time. Particularly during Covid it was a place we went to see people behaving rationally and kids got to act normal and smile. Maybe it’s different when you live there?
December 13th, 2023 at 8:41 AM ^
The only time I hate living here is around July/August. After 17 years being here, I've just gotten sick of the heat/humidity of summer. Similar to what most northerners would say about Jan/Feb/Mar.
December 13th, 2023 at 9:39 AM ^
this. and it's not just July and August it is May through October. At least here in the SRQ.

11 year resident after 35 years in the mitten. Leaving MI was the best decision I've ever made, should have done it ten years sooner. Quality of life across the board is 100x. To each their own though.

True story: One of my dad's work friends (recent retiree, late 50s) moved there in the mid-'90s. Within a few months he got herpes and run over by a golf cart (no injuries other than one of his ears almost being torn off).

Thats a pretty damn big "other than"...
December 13th, 2023 at 10:20 AM ^
Meh. Agree on leaving Michigan winters, but not to Florida. People in Florida spend almost, if not the same, time indoors over the course of a year, just for the opposite reasons. Give me MANY other states over Florida. Hawaii, Southern coastal California, North Carolina, etc.
