Who are the candidates to replace Juwan next year?

Submitted by sarto1g on December 5th, 2023 at 11:24 PM

Michigan is not making the tournament this year and the team looks as bad as ever.  Who are the names to consider moving forward?

Or maybe the OP, since he knows what's going on in our athletic department!  I won't go there.  But I'm positive after barely making it off of that operating table; I'm positive this talk don't mean ($&& to Juwan right now.  Right after a home loss you thought this was a grand idea?  Well Juwan I hope you don't go to bed stressed tonight!  Get healthy and GO BLUE, anyhow.

Disappointing so far but worth noting Juwan hasn't actually been the head coach yet this season. It's obvious he's taken a step back in that role. It does seem like a bit of a weird dynamic.

My expectations for this team were extremely low.  Was going to be surprised if they made the NIT.  That said, they're about as good as last year's team and wayyy less talented.  In that regard they're more fun to watch.

The lack of defense and not being able to win close games negate that.  This should be much better defensively - Burnett, Olivier, and Tarris should all be high-level defenders. The whole does not equal the sum of the parts.  Seems to be a theme with basketball the last couple years.  It's possible people used Dickinson's defense as a scapegoat last year.

exactly, what is going to change? we've been incapable of winning close games. At some point you have to point to the coaches not putting the players in the right position. Recruiting is in he tank so the cavalry isnt coming unless they hit the lottery in the portal.

It's not all his fault because admissions isn't doing them any favors, but with good coaching they would be winning a lot more of these games that go down to the final minute.

He will get one more year, as this year he can say the team was without their head coach most of the preseason and during season due to heart surgery. But next year will be it for sure, especially with Jace graduating.

Don’t know if we can lure a top tier coach like Nate Oats who everyone wanted but a likely popular under-the-radar type hire would be Dusty May from FAU

This continues to be frustrating to watch. I know we’ve been in almost every game but we’re just missing that small edge. Not sure if it’s coaching or players or both. Going to be a long year it seems like. Hope I’m wrong though! Go Blue!

I never would have thought that big time players would transfer away from Michigan. When HD transferred to Kansas instead of staying or going pro, it was a major signal that this isn't a serious program. We need a coach who can take mid-level talent and coach them up into a contender every few years. We have structural limitations that will keep many transfers and five star from coming here. Juwan has failed to realize this and adjust accordingly. Juwan would have worked better at a big time program where coaching matters less than player management.

Ride or die with Coach Juwan.

c’mon man, we’ve already been through this with JH.

Do you REALLY think Coach Juwan cannot figure this out?  Especially with Martelli helping.

There is unfortunately nothing in Juwan’s track record at Michigan that objectively suggests he can figure it out mid-season. The team’s record has gotten worse every year; postseason results as well.

Last year the team barely eclipsed .500, and now they are 4-5 with B1G play just starting. Nor is their any apparent, real depth on the roster judging by the relatively tight rotation to this point, so it’s not even clear where help would come from.

Coaches have down years and sometimes that's unavoidable. But this looks like an overall downward trend.

We'll get a pretty good test of that this year in January/February: will the team rally or will the slump continue/worsen? If the former, even if we don't have much to show for the end of the season, sustained or elevated performance in spite of a team not being in position to attain goals sets an expectation for future success. If the latter, I don't see anything in history or recent events to set that expectation.

In this new age of NIL and portal, it seems like portal >>> NIL from a long term strategic standpoint. Somehow our football program has figured out how to do this, while our bball program has not (Love, Shannon, etc).

Our football team has been expert at filling holes through the portal. They even somehow got the young LB from Nebraska, whereas admissions said no to Love and Shannon 🤔

Point is last year we were a sweet 16 team with Shannon. And this year with Shannon and Love, maybe Hunter doesn't leave. But that didn't happen and we will struggle going forward unless shit changes.

With your post it basically puts things in,"black and white!"  However, there will always be fantastic posts about our assistant coach, who's actually our head coach.  Right after a game in which we at least had a chance. Without more than one go to offensive player down the stretch; we are in a quandary.  Hopefully things get better, as the year goes by.  Whatever may be the case, I'm still rooting for Coach Juwan Howard and the Michigan Wolverines.

JB teams often recruited weird and started slow and got better when it mattered.  I’m holding until we see more.  But the guy that posted Dug in low post 1:1 nailed it.  That’s not good. Would be great to see some progress.  I love Big Nook heavily influenced by fab five hitting my junior year and giving benefit of the doubt.  He loves the school and program and let’s see if he can make the team better.

I do wonder if Howard's heart surgery may have changed his perspective on wanting to be a head coach.  He may also be permanently placing his health above being a head coach, which if that is the case, he is doing the right thing.

Forgive the pun, but if Juwan no longer has his heart into coaching, he should step aside and let Michigan find a new head coach.

I think Howard's a good person.  Bit of a temper, hehe.  I think his risky open heart surgery, (all surgery has risks, especially open heart surgery) has had a profound effect on the prerogatives in his life.

The ineptitude on defense should tell you all you need to know about this coaching staff. Especially with the athletic talent as very good - outside of Cheddar. Just frustrating that we have Warde - who's absolutely going to let this go as far down as Juwan let's it go.

I may be wrong, maybe somehow the team gets on a roll after the collective lightbulb goes on. But withstanding a coaching staff shakeup, bringing in a legit defensive mastermind, nothing will improve. The players are good enough, but the coaching sucks. And I love Juwan, as a player & Michigan man, but he's got an ego/anger problem big time and that doesn't work when you lead a program. Go Blue

I like Juwan. I still think he's a solid Xs and Os guy. I think the university has done a very poor job of supporting him. But it's pretty clear he's not ready to manage a roster and deal with the many other challenges of being a college head coach. He belongs in the NBA.

Juwan:  We are very concerned about your heart condition. Sign here and get well. Phil will coach the remainder of the season. A new coach will be named for next year.

College basketball is dead. Brand new team every year, impossible to coach, best you can hope for is a Will Wade to buy nba players and roll the ball out. Can't develop a never ending cycle of one year rentals.

Ah yes, Tarris Reed, Dug McDaniel, Will Tschetter, Terrance Williams...and of course Hunter Dickinson. The One-and-done guys who, wait, no, that's not right.

Bufkin wasn't one-and-done either. Neither was Franz.

We had Houston and Diabate and Juwan's own son...that's it. 3 guys over the course of 5 years.

I'm sorry, but WTF are you talking about?

Also, Beilein had Iggy at the end of his career. And Jordan Poole was basically a Bufkin situation. He also never dealt with NIL and the portal like Howard (two reasons he's admitted caused him to leave).

But how have one-and-dones ruined the program? Maybe we're just not a good team, we need better coaching, and we lost all momentum on the recruiting trail?

Our roster has been chock full of one year rentals lately: Nkamhoua, Nimari, jaelin if he didnt get injured, Tray, Jett, Baker, Frankie, Devante Jones, Diabate, Houston.

And it's only getting worse each year. How do you coach up a player who is only here for one year? How do you run good, complicated defense and offense when you have limited practice time and new players every year. The era of coaching kids up for 2-5 years is gone, now you just rent established players for one year and have them run boring, basic shit or poorly run complicated shit. It's not good basketball, it's Will Wade rolling the ball out which only kinda works if you can buy all the best players. I don't know about you but I find that terrible unfun to watch.

No shot.

But it's too early to tell.

If this is a terrible season...I think he's out. If we're .500, I think he *should* be out, but I think Warde keeps him one more year.

If he makes the tournament, then he buys himself more time.

It's too early, but he's off to a horrendous start and there is nothing to point towards that it will turn around (unless you believe in Llewellyn and this Argentinean kid that can't get into school).
