OT: Red Wings to Sign Kane, 4th Playoff Seed 20 Games In
Word on the street is that the Wings will sign Patrick Kane to a 1-year deal.
Kaner was good for almost a point per game in the playoffs last year for New York with a bad hip and is coming off hip resurfacing surgery. He will be reunited with DeBrincat to try and replicate the chemistry they had in Chicago where they teamed up for a lot of scoring.
When asked how his teams were doing early in the season Scotty Bowman replied he would have a pretty good idea 20 games in. The Red Wings currently have 25 points after 20 games putting them on pace to get 100 points, without Kane. It's still early but it appears that the Yzerplan is working and that the Wings will be returning to the playoffs this year. They are currently the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference.
Do you like the move? Will the Red Wings finally make the playoffs this year? Will they make it to the second round?

Probably should have added a little more context. Patrick Kane was the #1 overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft. He has had a Hall of Fame career winning multiple Cups with the Black Hawks, League MVPs for both regular season and playoffs, and a scoring title. He is 35 years old.

Is Kane that old that there are Red Wings fans that don't remember him? I feel old.
November 28th, 2023 at 10:48 AM ^
While he may not get a lot of ice time and points, he can teach the younger players how to win. This may be more of a "locker room" signing.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:13 AM ^
I don't think that context is necessary. Anyone who clicked on this post knows who kane is.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:26 AM ^
I clicked on the post and wasn't familiar with his name at all. Which is not surprising since I haven't followed the NHL at all for twenty years.

Congratulations for not knowing the best american hockey player of all time? (Yes over Chelios or Modano).

i mean ok but i also figured maybe one of these times you could have given it to Cheli or The Pride of Westland

Well you can’t say that anymore. By clicking this link you are somewhat following the NHL now.
November 28th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
I like the move a lot actually. But our goalies absolutely suck and if they can’t fix that, they won’t get into the playoffs.
November 28th, 2023 at 10:57 AM ^
I will not suffer your Alex Lyon denialism
November 28th, 2023 at 11:03 AM ^
Look on the bright side. Last 3 games, all 3 wins with the goalies giving up a total of 3 goals with a shutout
November 28th, 2023 at 11:31 AM ^
As I've heard several say, it's not all on the goalies. Yes they're not great but they don't suck. They need more help from a defensive standpoint. Outside of Seider, Gotisbehere and Walman who do we have that is really good? Continuing to score more goals this year should help the goalies as well.
I like this move because it gives the Wings more dimension and scoring options. Kane isn't likely to give you 20 minutes of ice time a night but he can help make a difference.
November 28th, 2023 at 10:36 AM ^
This is a low risk decision.
November 28th, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
If this happens, it seems a bit strange to me. I suppose the idea here is kicking the tires and seeing if Kane comes back strong enough to offer a longer-term deal.
Our focus should be on finding more solid goaltending at this point, as it seems Husso has taken a step back. Maybe they are thinking Lyon is the answer, but trying to win games 5-4 isn't a great move for the playoffs.
Onto the questions....yeah, I mean the move is fine. It's a one-year deal if it doesn't work out. I think we make the playoffs as a 6-ish seed. As far as the second round, I need to see more toughness / checking to be certain about that. Maybe Kane will bring that.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:15 AM ^
Signing Kane (no assets given up) and finding more solid goaltending (would have to be in a trade at this point) have no effect on each other. We are much more likely to trade away or waive one of our three goalies than we are going to acquire one.

Love this move! He and the Cat back together again.
November 28th, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
Absolutely love the move. Stevie Y & Co recognize that this is the season to get our winged wheel a-rolling thru the Lord Stanley playoff door, and even if we fall short, get playoff experience.

Suck it, Chicago. Just like Chelios
November 28th, 2023 at 11:07 AM ^
Chelios won cups with the Wings, hopefully Kane does also

I just put a chair on Woodward for the parade.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:48 AM ^
Haha! We're all vulnerable. The Wolverines heading into the CFP again after they take care of business on Saturday, the Lions tied for second in the NFC with the Chiefs and Cowboys, leading the Norris Division by 2.5 games, and the Wings, albeit with 3/4 of the season to go, as the 4th seed in the East?
Hold me!
November 28th, 2023 at 10:45 AM ^
I like this b/c it's a one-year "prove it" deal. I'm skeptical he can come back from the resurfacing, but he was damn near a point a game last year with a bum hip, so if he can really play, this is probably a plus for the Wings.
November 28th, 2023 at 12:15 PM ^
Don't even think it's a prove it deal; it's a rental. If he succeeds there is always a good culture in the Red Wings organization and he will want to be back on another 1 year rental - he could have gone to Florida with a high powered team and lower taxes but chose Detroit and his buddy. They aren't going to sign him to a 4 year deal after this.
November 28th, 2023 at 10:49 AM ^
I like the move
If he plays well and the Wings get into the playoffs, that’s awesome
If he plays well but the Wings fall out of contention, he becomes trade bait
November 28th, 2023 at 10:57 AM ^
I don't like him but if he can help the Wings win I'm good with it
November 28th, 2023 at 11:01 AM ^
I love this move as a perfect low risk high reward signing to bolster the wings but it feels wrong in my heart of hearts
November 28th, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
serious question, why? I don’t know anything about him other than he supposed to be a great hockey player, but the poster above you also made mention of Kane not be in his favorite.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:38 AM ^
I have a general dislike for anything to do with the Blackhawks from '07-17. The rivalry for a few years while the Wings were coming down and they were coming up was intense. I had several Blackhawks friends who made those years into a fun but bitter rivalry.
There was also the time he beat up a geriatric cab driver over $.20: https://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/11/sports/hockey/11nhl.html
November 28th, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
I like it. Low risk move that definitely adds some pop to the top 6 (presumably) and PP. We will definitely have a lot of forwards to juggle, but injuries happen and nobody was is out there lighting it up in GR that demands a promotion.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:13 AM ^
I’m surprised. I was thinking he may end up in Buffalo, but I like the deal. If it turns out that he isn’t the same after the hip resurfacing then they won’t be stuck with him beyond this season. And if he can still play then it’s an excellent move.
If they can maintain their defensive play from the last few games and Lyon can get hot in the playoffs, then I could see them stealing a series depending who they get matched up with.
I’m also curious what number Kane will choose, since Sprong has 88.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:15 AM ^
Good hockey move. I'm not a fan of him as a person but it makes sense from a hockey standpoint
November 28th, 2023 at 11:23 AM ^
A nit pick, but the Wings are not the "4 seed" in the East.
They are the 3 seed in the Atlantic Division
November 28th, 2023 at 11:54 AM ^
If you go to the NHL Standings page and sort the teams by Conference, they're in 4th. If I recall correctly that is how they seed the playoff teams, top 8 in the conference.
I like to take it one step further and sort by Pt%, one column to the right of Pts, which compensates for teams that haven't played as many games. The Wings are in the 4th spot sorted both ways, Pts and Pt%.

I wonder if he is fully recovered from his hip resurfacing surgery. My teenage son had to have a similar surgery at the end of last year and it took him 8-9 months before he could resume somewhat normal activity. Hip surgeries can be pretty rough. Hope he crushes it with the Wings. They could use some more secondary scoring.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:28 AM ^
I'm seeing one-year, $2.75M. That's a good deal, esp if we can rent him for the playoffs if we don't make it. Very low risk; I'd expect Fabbri to end up being odd man out, although be nice to trade him if possible, since he is $4MM this year and next.
November 28th, 2023 at 12:02 PM ^
You're right, great deal even if he ends up being a productive middle 6 guy. Fabri's been playing really well lately though. It does present a bit of a dilemma with the current lineup.
Who do you sit?

Bergrenn called up too so wondering if Stevie has an eye on shipping someone completely out. Maybe Fischer?

I wonder if Stevie Y sees a little if himself (his last year when he was playing basically on one leg) in Kane.
Low risk, cost move and just for this year (no one has played significant number of games after
hip resurfacing).
Unlike the Pistons, the Red Wings get the importance of veterans in a team's makeup.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:46 AM ^
They are currently the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference.
This isn’t a thing after the NHL went back to division-based playoffs a number of years ago now. Overall standing in the Conference isn’t relevant aside from wild card consideration. The Wings are the third seed in the Atlantic.
November 28th, 2023 at 12:09 PM ^
Right, they would make it as either the 3rd place team (or better) in the Atlantic or the 7th or 8th place team in the Conference. And they're 4th right now with a long way to go.
Edit: The top three in each division go and then the next 2 highest in points in the conference, not necessarily 7th and 8th.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:55 AM ^
It's a low-risk pickup even if the player they're getting isn't capital P, capital K Patrick Kane anymore.
Goaltending isn't great but it's not a tire fire; they're about middle of the league. Obviously getting better there is a good idea but that doesn't preclude deals like this one.
November 28th, 2023 at 11:59 AM ^
They moved Debrincat to the 2nd line before NJ playing with Compher. I'm assuming splitting him from Larkin/Raymond was not just done with the hopes of increased production from the top 6 (which has worked), but also in anticipation of reuniting him with Kaner on the 2nd.
I'm all for bringing in Kane. Not dissing Copp, but they need more production from the 2nd line than he can offer.
November 28th, 2023 at 12:12 PM ^
Zero risk option. All you risk is part of the salary cap which the Red Wings have extra money to abide. No assets given up. If he works out he works out, if not he won't play and fade into the night. If he can contribute 15 goals the rest of the way and help on the PP it's a great get.
November 28th, 2023 at 12:33 PM ^
If Kane is healthy, he will be productive. I enjoyed watching him for years as a Blackhawks fan, but it was obviously time to start a new chapter for the franchise. I wish him and the Wings all the best until the Hawks are competent again.
