Happy Thanksgiving Everybody - What's on the Menu?
Mates,
Thanksgiving is here. Soon after college was over I realized it was my favorite holiday. Both Washington and Lincoln issued proclamations about it, with part of Washington's here:
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed—for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted—for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.
He rightly points out some of the incredible benefits of the country we live in, not the least of which are liberty, tranquility, union and plenty (yeah, we could use a little more of those, but let's skip that discussion today).
Beyond that, most of us get to at least be with family or friends, have some enjoyable meals, and even this year, a fairly likely Lions victory - 8 pt favorites against the Pack today, an impossibility just a couple of years ago.
So here's to you having a relaxing day, a fun day, a day that renews bonds with loved ones.
And do tell, what is on the menu for food and activities today? Regardless, I hope you have a very enjoyable day.
Go Blue, beat ohio!

I'm not in charge of cooking the majority of the food, but I made:
Homemade applesauce
Pumpkin Pie
A layered dessert - bottom layer nutella, mid layer cool whip, top layer chocolate / whipping cream combo.
November 23rd, 2023 at 9:23 AM ^
I'm not allowed to cook any of the food.

Meatballs. Homemade Mac n cheese. Mashed potatoes. Roast. Turkey. Sausage. Apple pie.
I'm gaining 10 pounds this weekend.
November 23rd, 2023 at 6:33 AM ^
with proper application of ice cream, particularly vanilla, to that apple pie you could boost that weight gain up a few more lbs. and remember, all weight gain is good, just like weight loss.
November 23rd, 2023 at 6:44 AM ^
I can't eat ice cream without cake so that weight gain would be approaching dangerous levels.
November 23rd, 2023 at 7:20 AM ^
don't be selfish, take one for the team.
November 23rd, 2023 at 6:32 AM ^
In your case isn't it who's on the menu?
Have a safe and joyous holiday season preamble.
Did an early meal yesterday with Father in Assisted Living and he wanted homemade meatloaf with cheesy potatoes and lemon cake? Go figure. So that was it and heading up to TC this morning to watch the Lion's game from our home there. Big screen versus my small set up here.
Just feel alive when I pass Standish and Upnorth begins for me. In warmer seasons windows get cracked to smell the pine. Plan to be there full time in under two years when we are both retired.

that is funny. yes, it is a 'who' of sorts. the family choice for thanksgiving dinner was lamb, and we harvested a bunch of those this fall. all 9 of us will be together, and two legs of lamb are on the menu.
November 23rd, 2023 at 12:25 PM ^
With nine of you, the lamb always gets outvoted. They get to be the guest of honor though.

truth be told, we're outnumbered in the vote category but i'm not running a perfectly functioning democracy. the votes are only advisory.

Sadly, today’s menu is AIRPLANE FOOD. All day! Heading to SE Asia for two weeks+ of vacation. I miss Thanksgiving when we do this. But I’ll make a turkey dinner during Christmas break. And both kids/spouses are traveling with us. So a great day overall!
Hoping we can stream the Lions game during the flight. (It’s been hit or miss on Delta Intl flights.)

Safe travels and have a great vacation with your family!!

I’m just looking forward to my Apple Brown Peggy. That little bit of OJ makes all the difference, I tell ya hwhat.

Gonna make myself sick on as many clusters of crab legs as I possibly can at the original Benjamin's seafood buffet.
Did it 2 years ago, and it helped break OSU's streak...

First thanksgiving as a single dad is tomorrow with the kids. My 4 yo daughter loves french fries more than life itself, so homemade fries is first on the menu, along with homemade donuts. I can't think of a better main course.
November 23rd, 2023 at 7:53 AM ^
When my kids were little, they didn't go for mashed potatoes, or gratin, or any of the more typical presentations, so for a few Thanksgiving, there was a turkey and tater tot option. Mind you, I am first-generation American, so this particular holiday, which my family sort of adopted, has a lot of weird takes in my house and this was among them.
November 23rd, 2023 at 7:57 AM ^
I love weird takes for thanksgiving. That's what makes it such a great holiday. It's all about the food and family/friends, nothing else.
November 23rd, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
For fifteen years, when my kids were in their early teens on into early adulthood, we lived too far away from the rest of the family to drive home for Thanksgiving. Neither child is fond of turkey, nor traditions, so our Thanksgiving feast was homemade pizzas. We wouldn't eat until evening, and many of their friends would escape from their day-long imprisonment with their least favorite relatives and stop by to get a slice or two.
Now that I'm living with and taking care of my elderly parents, and the kids and their spouses are doing their own non-traditions, it's back to the typical American Thanksgiving fare. I made four pies and my marinated turkey is in the oven (and already smells great!). Mom baked rolls and made the dressing. Dad has wisely tried to stay out of the way. Other people will be bringing all the other usual dishes, and there will be eleven of us for dinner starting at halftime of the Lions game.

Having turkey, decided not to smoke one this year and just do it in a turkey roaster.
Mashed taters, green bean casserole, homemade stuffing, as assortment of finger foods.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours XM

I personally think that smoked Turkey is really overrated. Used to go to my brother in laws who smoked it every year and I thought it zapped the flavor out of it and dried it out.
Traditional style this year, fortunately.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Biscuits and Gravy for breakfast. The normal Thanksgiving food for dinner. Dessert on Saturday!
November 23rd, 2023 at 7:58 AM ^
Dinner at my sister in laws in Livonia today. I’m going to spatchcock and smoke a turkey tomorrow for leftover sandwiches and I’ll also make a turkey jambalaya. Slowly putting up Christmas lights and decorations in between all that.
Happy Thanksgiving! Go blue!

Happy Thanksgiving MGoBloggers. ! Traditional fare at my sister in law's, with home Thanksgiving Friday. Nice to have my daughters home to watch The Game. They have been loyal Michigan fans, through the lean years which says something about them being raised right. Have a great and safe weekend everyone here.

Got the turkey on the smoker, some ham in the oven and the traditional sides. Looking forward to demolishing a pecan pie and then hibernate into tomorrow. But only after watching a Lions and Cowboys victory.
Happy Thanksgiving and Go Blue!!!

Thanks XM. The leg of lamb sounds fantastic. This will be our third straight odd year Thanksgiving in Ann Arbor area. Son was a sophomore and senior for the first two but 2021 was so much fun we decided to do it again even though he’s now moved on and happily employed. Drove up Tuesday from the MidAtlantic through the rain. House on a lake 30 minutes west of town with a small family gathering, brother in law will be going to the game with my two sons and I. We did takeout Zingermans in 2019 and The Produce Station in 2021. Needless to say we are leery of repeating anything from 2019. So The Produce Station again today!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and all!

Smoked Honey Baked Ham
Stove Top Stuffing
Mac And Cheese (the secret is to add some cream cheese)
Green beans with french onions
Alcohol, lots and lots of alcohol.
And hopefully a Lions dunking of the Pack.

What’s a French onion? Is that like a regular onion but at Whole Foods so they can charge $4 for it?

Thanksgiving is pretty much my favorite day of the year, mostly because my wife is an incredible cook (and I’m a pretty good assistant) and it’s a day dedicated to eating, drinking and football. And then The Game is 2 days later. Just the best holiday of the year.
Our menu includes:
Apps: Home made pigs in a blanket, potato puffs (basically homemade mashed potatoes wrapped in a homemade puff pastry) and mini beef empenedas (along with the less exciting tray of cut up veggies and dip).
The meal starts at halftime of the second NFL game and includes:
2 Turkeys, sweet potato pie, stuffing, stuffed mushrooms, homemade cranberry sauce, noodle pudding, Swedish meatballs and homemade cornbread.
Then dessert is (all homemade): chocolate chip cookies, double chocolate cookies, ice cream / brownie cake, 3 types of chocolate bark and warm dark chocolate lava cakes.
Damn, now I’m hungry

What time should I come over?
November 23rd, 2023 at 8:30 AM ^
My new wife and I (married 13 days and going strong!) are hosting a few friends who are Thanksgiving orphans, since we've both had enough of big family gatherings for a while. The menu:
- Turkey, spatchcocked, dry brined with brown sugar, salt, pepper, and dried thyme and rubbed with olive oil and fresh sage/rosemary/thyme
- Green bean casserole with fried shallots and homemade cream of mushroom
- Candied yams with marshmallows on top
- A big old green salad
- Pumpkin cheesecake with whipped cream
- Leftover wine and beer from our wedding
Happy Thanksgiving, y'all.
November 23rd, 2023 at 8:34 AM ^
Happy Thanksgiving.
Basic but traditional meal plan for us:
Turkey, mashed potatoes, rolls (from our bakery), green beans, cranberries and stuffing.
November 23rd, 2023 at 8:38 AM ^
Cornish hens (wife idea) homemade Mac and cheese.
November 23rd, 2023 at 8:43 AM ^
I’m going all out this year. Toast, pan-fried popcorn, pretzel sticks, jelly beans, and then ice cream sundaes for dessert.
I’m pretty sure that this combination has never been attempted. Wish me luck.
