MSU Uniformzzzz for Saturday
MSU Football X (a.k.a. Twitter) put out a little video that people believe teases that MSU will wear alternate uniforms on Saturday.
The alternate uniform is called "Shadows" which was revealed before the season.
Wearing black for their funeral.*
*Someone else's joke that I'm stealing.

Deadpool would recommend they wear the brown pants and red jerseys. Cuz… valid reasons.

Nice. All the best teams in Michigan wear blue. pic.twitter.com/FC23nNQgDg

What does that have to do with MSU?
October 18th, 2023 at 1:50 PM ^
It...has a little Spartan helmet logo on the pants.
October 18th, 2023 at 2:15 PM ^
Okay.
Seth used Photoshop or some such program to identify the color of the Shadows uniform in the MSU tweet and found the pixel that was closest to blue so that he could pretend that MSU's clearly black uniforms are really just a dark shade of blue, which is his way of trolling MSU because we wear blue, which makes this #SpartyFail. (Someone else pointed out Seth was also probably referencing the Lions.)
Then Wolverine MD's question is for one of two reasons:
1) Seth talked about the "best" football teams in Michigan, which obviously has nothing to do with MSU because they're nowhere near the best, so what does it have to do with MSU? (The answer would be that Seth is condescendingly applauding MSU for mimicking the best, which they themselves are not.)
Or
2) The MSU uniform is clearly not blue, so what do teams wearing blue have to do with MSU? (The answer is, as noted above, Seth found an almost blue, but not really, pixel.)
Wolverine MD was not asking "What does the Spartan uniform have to do with the Spartans?"
Glad I could clear this up.

Do go on. Punchlines are MUCH punchier when explained at length.
October 18th, 2023 at 9:40 PM ^
Snowcrash seemed like they needed a little help in keeping up. Or maybe I just didn't get their joke and someone should explain it to me.
October 18th, 2023 at 8:21 AM ^
Ferris St doesn't wear blue...
October 18th, 2023 at 10:13 AM ^
But GVSU has blue in their uniforms so it stands. He said "the best" teams.
October 18th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
I'd say the recent back to back D2 National Championships qualifies them on that list.
Even if GVSU smacked the taste out of their mouth last weekend
October 18th, 2023 at 11:45 AM ^
He means UM & Lions, the 2 best teams by a wide margin.
October 17th, 2023 at 11:23 PM ^
The one thing about this rivalry that scares the sh*t out of me is that no matter how bad MSU is…no matter how good we are…there is a potential for craziness to happen.
I won’t relax until we are up by 40 with 10 seconds left. I hope they enjoy their shadow Jersies while getting throttled.

As it was outlined in a punt counterpoint some years ago, despite people saying this kind of thing, the better team has pretty much always won this game. And when MSU had beaten us in years where we think we should have won, both teams were good.
2016 we were huge favorites and inwas frustrated it wasn’t the blowout we will likely see Saturday. But despite garbage time scores, #winwithdignity, we still won handily.
2020 is the one key exception where we were 20+ point favorites and lost. But that was the Covid year and well it just doesn’t count in terms of this idea that they have any chance Saturday.
52-3 Michigan.
October 18th, 2023 at 1:25 AM ^
Yea I mostly agree. 2017 we weren't good, 2020 we both were bad, 2021 and 2016 we both were pretty good. Dantonio had a better program than Rod and Hoke. And before that, M was the better program but honestly looking back at that era MSU must've felt snakebite - the Braylon game, the OT win when they had the better record, and the late comeback in the little brother game. But when we've been better, we've won. When they have, they have. When it's even - if late they've win the close ones. But once upon a time we won most of the closer ones.
I ain't scared. We are better. Let's win with cruelty.
October 18th, 2023 at 6:22 AM ^
2016 MSU went 3-9.
October 18th, 2023 at 6:24 AM ^
I think he means 2015.
October 18th, 2023 at 6:49 AM ^
When this discussion came up the other day, I erroneously concluded that you were right, that in this century we've always won when we were better. But I completely glossed over one of the games.
2001
October 18th, 2023 at 7:12 AM ^
We were 8-4 that year and MSU 7-5, so not much of a difference, especially given that MSU was at home. Still, with a neutral timekeeper we'd have won.
October 18th, 2023 at 7:21 AM ^
We finished ranked #20, 6-2 in conference. MSU was 3-5 in conference.
They got to 7 wins because they beat Fresno State in a bowl game. We got our ass handed to us in our bowl game by Tennessee.
MSU lost to the likes of unranked Minnesota, Indiana, and Purdue.
I'm not saying the gap was necessarily vast between them and us. But I think it counts as a year we were better and lost.
October 18th, 2023 at 7:32 AM ^
I think that's a very reasonable take and I may have to revisit my spreadsheet. : )
October 18th, 2023 at 8:19 AM ^
I remember the opposite: we were only in that game due to Bobby Williams coaching malpractice. TJ Duckett was killing us and BW ran him way too little. Lots of third downs that should have been runs with TJD were incomplete passes. Even so LaSuer gave that game away with his selfish bullshit penalty at the end to keep the bullshit drive alive. Fuck state.
October 18th, 2023 at 9:42 AM ^
Fair enough, though I felt like that was one of the few Carr teams that didn't show improvement as the year went on. Our offense regressed badly in the final month of the year.
As for MSU, they had some high-end talent on that team (Duckett, Rogers, Smoker) but Bobby Williams definitely didn't get the most out of them.

Or with a fair and reasonable holding call.

Remember the year well. The prevalent MgoJoke was, “well find out in three to nine minutes”. As good as that joke was, there are 4,227 better jokes out there. Check that, 4,523 better jokes out there
October 18th, 2023 at 7:14 AM ^
2020 is the one key exception where we were 20+ point favorites and lost.
It's not really an exception. It was the second game of the season and no one (including Vegas) knew how good or bad either team was. Had there never been a pandemic, we probably would have been much better than MSU, but as it was, we were terrible.
October 18th, 2023 at 8:11 AM ^
2020 was hard for any home team to get up for a game when there was nobody in the stands. No home field advantage. I watched very little football that year. Knowing the roaring crowd on TV was 100% fake made it all fake to me.
October 18th, 2023 at 9:26 AM ^
the 2021 game is the most obvious better team did not win the game. Their 11-2 record that year was largely a mirage. Their non-con schedule was pretty bad, Youngstown St, Western Kentucky, a 7-5 Manny Diaz Miami team. Their crossovers with the west were the easiest possible setup getting the 2 last place, 3 win teams in the west and at Purdue where they were defeated soundly.
2015 is debatable.
October 18th, 2023 at 11:54 AM ^
Um was ranked one spot higher than sparty after the loss.
October 18th, 2023 at 12:49 PM ^
Michigan was likely better, but not tremendously so. Having the Doak winner can cover a lot of weakness. This seems like it was within the margin of expectations, rather than an out-of-nowhere upset.
October 18th, 2023 at 1:28 AM ^
Michigan beat the crap out of MSU in 2019 and 2022. It may be close for a quarter but I don't see how this doesn't end up at least a 20 point UM win. If it gets out of hand, I expect a 2016 Rutgers 2 point conversion after the tunnel thing.
October 18th, 2023 at 8:30 AM ^
I didn't see the game but seeing that they were up big at Rutgers who aren't bad, which means they're more talented than we realize. They won't collapse vs us and a win for them would make their entire season.
October 18th, 2023 at 9:48 AM ^
I watched MSU play Washington, Maryland, Iowa and Rutgers. They are as talented and poorly coached as the 0-4 B1G record indicates.
October 18th, 2023 at 12:12 PM ^
Rutger turnovers gave MSU the lead. MSU turnovers gave it back.
October 18th, 2023 at 12:16 PM ^
Had you watched the game, you would not have been saying this. I have YouTube TV and I put the Michigan game on 1 big screen solo and then YouTube Multiview on a 2nd big screen so that I can look over in between plays and during those painful 3:00 commercial breaks.
The score was no where indicative of the game. Rutgers muffed a punt inside their 10 to gift MSU one of their TD's and the Rutgers QB threw multiple terrible INT that set up Sparty. There was no domination in that game....either way.
Sparty just went out of their way to give the game back in the 4th quarter. This was just about as ugly of a game anyone could watch.

Maybe by wearing all black they are trying to disappear into the night?
Or they're being mimes for Halloween and trying out their costumes early?
I get it... night game = black uniforms, but it seems a bit obvious.
October 18th, 2023 at 5:24 AM ^
We got a black kitten in August. It makes sense, but I was not ready for how easily she can hide in the shadows.
October 18th, 2023 at 9:03 AM ^
We had a black cat for 13 years, and I can’t tell you how many times I almost sat on her on our dark leather couch. When the lights were low late at night, she literally disappeared in the shadows, and I stepped on her repeatedly.
October 18th, 2023 at 9:33 AM ^
Because they are a shadow of their former selves.

While I prefer the traditional maize pants, I hope Michigan wears the all white uniforms Saturday.
Good Guys vs Bad Guys.

All maize.
October 18th, 2023 at 5:33 AM ^
lutha, respectfully, maize jerseys are never, ever the correct answer.
October 18th, 2023 at 8:17 AM ^
I agree in football, but hockey and basketball are an entirely different story.
October 18th, 2023 at 8:34 AM ^
I agree, especially for basketball, but it’s hard to articulate to “why”isn’t it? At least it is for me anyway
October 18th, 2023 at 8:41 AM ^
Because you can put an "M" or "Michigan" on a basketball and hockey jersey.
October 18th, 2023 at 10:23 AM ^
Maize hockey jerseys from the 90s with script Michigan are the pinnacle of Michigan hockey apparel.
October 18th, 2023 at 10:50 AM ^
they were white for us. my preference, but i don't mind the yellow.
October 18th, 2023 at 6:16 AM ^
I was at the 2017 Florida game when Michigan wore all maize.
I hope they never pick that uniform combination again. Ever. It was so tacky, and right up there with the 2011 MSU Bumblebee uniform.
October 17th, 2023 at 11:47 PM ^
Nope. Just shoes. They’re only wearing shoes on Saturday.
October 18th, 2023 at 12:43 AM ^
Of course. Seems like the most appropriate way to honor their former coach.
