Parking/Tailgating in EL
Looking at their parking map, appears to have only a handful of public lots and all look pretty small. How long does it take for these to fill up?
I have seen people mention the Mt Hope Road shuttle lot, however we will be getting there around noon and looking to tailgate closer to the stadium.
Fortunately this is my first time tailgating in EL (Fuck MSU), any advice would be appreciated.
Go Blue!

My advice: Don't.

My advice: Do.
Who's going to be tailgating? They can't sell their tickets off fast enough because they know they have a coach-less dogshit team and they're going to eat shit all night long on Saturday. You don't think our team forgot about that tunnel "incident" last year, do ya?
Show up, Wear your Michigan gear, take over the stadium, and watch the Maize and Blue own them in their own house. The boa constrictor don't care about rivalry games. None of that old MSU voo-doo nonsense. They are a shit team and we're all going to enjoy watching the light go out of their eyes as the boa tightens his grip.

I like your spirit, sir.

I'll post the details as necessary, but there's no need for any bowel clenching about Saturday's game. There's been only a single instance in the last fifty years where a mediocre MSU team has beaten a good UM team. Anyone who tells you to "throw out the records" or "prepare for some wackiness" or "RIVALS!!!" should be ignored IMO.

?
1991, 1995, 2001 off the top of my head.
October 17th, 2023 at 3:34 PM ^
1990 was the trip Desmond in the end zone game.
2001 was spartan bob. The next year the NCAA made the clock operator part of the officiating crew....

If you meant 1990 (when MSU won), here were the end-of-season records:
UM 9-3, MSU 8-3-1
2001:
UM 8-4, MSU 7-5
Neither qualifies. 1995, though? You win the prize on that one. It's the 1-in-50+ instance I mentioned.

Loser mentality, it’s an instate rival, keep your mouth shut and cheer fort your team, what’s the worst that can happen, MSU fans talk shit?
October 17th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
To piggyback off of this, does anyone have recommendations for parking that don't involve tailgating? If I decide to go it'll be with my 8-year old, so not looking to tailgate before and would like to get out as quick as possible after. I don't mind walking a mile or 2 to get to the stadium.

Last time I was there for a game which was pre covid I found a parking spot that I believe I paid for in or by the Trowbridge Plaza which is on the corner of Trowbridge Rd and South Harrison Rd. The walk in was easy and had no issues.

From what I have read, the shuttle Lot off Mt Hope/Farm road would be ideal for you. Shuttle starts running 2 hours prior to the game.
October 17th, 2023 at 7:06 PM ^
There's a reason the Sparty faithful call the Mt Hope lots "Siberia".

Either the Pizza House lot on Hagadorn - take their shuttle (see below) or park in one of the parking ramps in downtown EL and walk.
The second option will not be as easy to get out as the first.

In the neighborhood just north of Grand River and just east of Harrison, there is plenty of free parking on the street. The bigger the game the farther up into the neighborhood people park, but even for this game (their Super Bowl), the cars don't go more than a 1.0 mile walk to the stadium. I'd do that.

^^this^^ google conrad's grill and park north of there in that neighborhood.
October 17th, 2023 at 12:17 PM ^
We did Lot 91, corner of Service and Hagadorn. It was like $20 and easy out. No tailgating was there, it is a reasonable walk though.

A two mile hike with an 8 year old at 11:00 p.m. More power to you.
October 19th, 2023 at 11:41 PM ^
It's unreal how much/long this kid can run and play and never get tired. A 2 mile walk for him is nothing, especially after watching his favorite team get a win (he hasn't seen them in person since he was 2.5 which he obviously doesn't remember).

The East Lansing high school parking lot is a good spot just for parking. I think it's $10 and pretty easy in and out.

Sounds pretty foolh... brave to me. Wear plenty of Lions and Tigers gear to emphasize what you have in common.
October 17th, 2023 at 11:06 AM ^
lol, will be in a group of four 40+ year old males. One happens to be a police officer....nothing can go wrong right?

Wear maize for the EL Maize Out takeover of Spartan Stadium.

I'm glad someone else posted a thread. I wanted to check our plan as well.
Coming from Livonia, wanted to leave around noon, stop for carry out lunch in Williamston or Okemos, then try arriving at Commuter lot 89 around 2 or 3, have a couple beers in a bag chair and then shuttle in. Solid plan or no?

Think bar parking lot scene from Animal House. Drive like they drive, act like they act...blend in.
Watch out for the few with opposable thumbs.

Good luck up there. The more maize and blue the better. I'm trying to convince my brother in law to go but he's whining about getting home late.

I don't know if anybody actually tailgates there, but whenever I go to a game at MSU, I park in the shopping center lot on Hagadorn and Service Drive, about half a mile north of Mt Hope which is free, and take the free Pizza House shuttle to and from the stadium. Easy in, easy out, and you've got a number of decent restaurant options right where you parked or within a couple miles with minimal game traffic.

What time does the shuttle run from?
October 17th, 2023 at 12:55 PM ^
Their shuttle runs 2 hours before kickoff so should be 5:30 start this weekend and then it runs a couple hours after the game. During blowouts it runs during the second half so expect it to start up in the middle of the second quarter.

We have hit up Plante Moran on E Mich Ave a few times, easy walk. We have found other places along that stretch to park. I have been to the last 3 games in EL and never had an issue other than the normal loud talkers.
October 17th, 2023 at 11:21 AM ^
There is a parking structure called Ramp 2 near the Shaw dorm. We parked there for the last 2-3 games in EL. It filled up fairly early for noon games. Not really easy out, but it might be light traffic on the way home if every Spartan fan bails at halftime. We’re staying at a hotel close to the stadium due to the silly night game scheduling.
October 17th, 2023 at 12:11 PM ^
I have never had a problem parking in East landfill. There are parking garages as well as open Lots if you get there a little early you can find one.
October 17th, 2023 at 1:06 PM ^
Just use your common sense - keep your child(ren) close to you.
Get in... watch the game... and get out.
Go Blue!

Don't engage is the best advice.
I went as a neutral to an MSU/OSU game and this dude wanted to fight me because I didn't look Spartan enough.
October 17th, 2023 at 1:58 PM ^
No where near an MSU tailgating expert but the field near Munn was always the place to be. Ialso see alot of good tailgates by the Planetarium along Shaw Lane.
FYI for those going, I believe MSU has increased the price of parking at the Mt. Hope commuter lot to $20 whether you ride the shuttle bus or not.
October 17th, 2023 at 2:53 PM ^
20 years ago I know that their fans used to line up in their cars/trucks the night before and spend the night in them in order to get into one specific tailgate spot. I doubt they're doing that these days.
October 17th, 2023 at 4:23 PM ^
East Lansing is a bit of a different animal. There are some lots but it really is a free for all. It's typical to see tailgaters pitch their canopies on the lawns of school buildings.

I am also looking for advice on parking and also a place to eat and drink before the game.
There will be 6 of us with no couches, (if I was still a cop, I’d be carrying), so we should be relatively safe.
We plan on arriving around 1:30-2:00 and are a looking for a place that we can watch other games, eat and drink for a couple hours before heading over to the snake pit.
October 17th, 2023 at 6:06 PM ^
That would be the Pizza House lot x3, though I'm not a fan of Pizza House. You could also watch games at SanSu, but its bar is small and only one TV IIRC I don't know what their deal is on parking, but Harrison Roadhouse would work, within reasonable walk to stadium. For that matter, you could just park in any of the downtown EL city ramps and have your choice of restaurants & bars. It's not a bad walk through campus to the stadium from downtown EL.
October 17th, 2023 at 10:42 PM ^
And, I guess I can't let this thread pass without one more option, given it's a night game. You could park in downtown Lansing and then take the #1 bus down Michigan Ave/Grand River to and from campus. There's a bus stop out to E.Lansing right at the Grand River, and back in to downtown at Museum Drive. Bus runs every 20 minutes well past when the game will be over. You can research on the interwebs the various dining, drinking and entertainment options right by those bus stops available before and after the game.
