Rumor: Michigan back in contention for Nkamhoua
Per all the same sources that said M was out yesterday. What a wild ride.
Can he play the 2nd corner position?
Maybe they offered him a tryout for cornerback ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I am confused at this worry about the 2nd CB position. Did Michigan not go into 2021 with DJ Turner, Vincent Gray and Gemon Green 3 guys that were seen as average-below average players and turned out great?
I don't think they will have a problem finding someone pop up on the other side of Will Johnson between McBurrows, Kody Jones, Amorion Walker, Jyaire Hill or adding Josh Wallace tomorrow from UMass. We have to trust #CoachClink
You my friend sound like someone thats making a lot of sense.
Exactly. And remember they have 6-8 games to sort it out. Secondary will be fine.
Lol...Gray and Green were returning starters. And Turner had a ton of hype coming out of fall camp that the was going to supplant one of those two.
This ain't that.
You’re right, that ai it it—it’s better. Will Johnson is a five star preseason all American. Walker, McBurroughs, Jones, and Hill are all four stars fighting for a starting position in a secondary that also has Mikey Sanristil, Rod Moore, and Makari Paige.
Coming into 2021 most posters here were expecting a bloodbath on defense, and the lack of athleticism at corner was one of the many reasons. Remind me where Gray and Green got drafted again?
Assuming every time there is an upperclassman departure that a new, unproven player will come in and immediately be an above average Big Ten player is... blind faith-y. So is assuming every unsettled spot will be a complete tire fire. Point being, the football program has few questions marks this off-season and the CB2 position is a perfectly reasonable thing to wonder/have some concern about.
It's a running joke anyways. Every time a recruit or transfer is mentioned, someone asks if they can play DT/CB/PF.
Buddy, I have been on the blog longer than you to understand that running joke.
Did you miss Vincent Gray's 2020 MSU game and then forget his improvement in 2021?
Maybe Mike Sainristil going from WR to All-Big Ten caliber slot corner in 1 year?
I don't think its "blind-faith" in thinking one of those players, supported by 2 of the best safeties in the Big Ten/entire country will turn out just fine.
As an aside, "Blind Faith-y" sounds like the name of a tribute band for a 1969 supergroup.
Can't Find My Way home is a great song...saw the allman brothers band cover it like 15 years ago...it was awesome.
Thanks for the idea, I would start that tribute band myself it if wasn't for just one thing. I have, what doctors call, a serious lack of talent.
Well at least for you it's just doctors. For me, it's critics. I'm not allowed in any karaoke establishments anymore.
So if you know it's a joke, why was your immediate reaction to spring into a defense of the situation?
And yes, I was around for the MSU game and Gray's improvement into 2021. Along with Sainristil doing his thing.
Do you remember how many great CBs Zordich coached? Lewis, Stribling, Watson (all but for Chris Olave), Long, Hill, Thomas. Then what happened? Gray and Green were under his watch so how did a really good, proven CB coach all of a sudden fail to develop some guys? Can't argue it was because he only had highly rated guys who would have been good no matter what. We watched Watson go from an 800 ranked, nobody recruit who we all hoped never saw the field to the 3rd CB that was only bested by a 1st round draft pick. And Stribling's most noteworthy play until Zordich was getting Mossed by Allen Robinson.
That's my point, having faith that the coaching staff will do their job and get these guys to a point where you don't have to hold your breath every time a fade is thrown is fine. But unilaterally saying "it'll be fine just because it was fine before and it will be fine again" isn't all that insightful. That same post could have been made in the spring of 2020 and we all would have nodded and said "yup, Zordich has this." As a matter of fact, you even kind of start to move in the direction of critical conversation in your last sentence:
one of those players, supported by 2 of the best safeties in the Big Ten/entire country will turn out just fine.
You're right, they will have the support of probably the best Safety duo in the conference to help them over the top. They're also going to play in a scheme that doesn't leave them in press man cover 1 all day like Gray and Green were. Maybe had they not been asked to be CB1 and CB2 (remember Thomas skipped the Covid year) and had good Safeties over the top they wouldn't have been lit on fire.
I love your optimism but the fear is that this is like 2020 when those same guys weren't ready.
With McBurrows' injury history, Jones practicing primarily in the slot, and Walker and Hill learning the position AND the system, they may all need another year. I do think they'll all be stars by 2024 but this year may be too early. Fingers crossed for Wallace tomorrow.
In 2020 Michigan's safeties coach disappeared and had a GA coaching the position and their best CB sat out to prepare for the NFL Draft. While Don Brown was forcing them to line-up press-man every play.
The 2023 Michigan team and staff are nothing like 2020.
the fear is that this is like 2020
OK, just stop right there buddy.
I just went through the 2021 previews on MGoBlog, 247, and Athlon.
Not a single one was doubting Green or Gray. Both returning starters from 2020. Turner was being hyped more than Amorion Walker is now.
It was McDonald's first year and the question was who was going to start opposite Hutchinson.
...if Michigan was returning another starter this year we did in 2021, no one would be saying anything.
Let's not make stuff up just because it sounds good.
Weren't there highlights of freshman Calhoun intercepting passes in spring practices? I hope McBurrows can hold the job down while the freshman get acclimated like Johnson did last year. If he works out great, if not maybe one of the freshman might be ready later in the year.
Are we really going to pretend that Vincent Gray was a great corner? Average AT BEST
The fixation on that spot is largely a product of fans needing something to worry about heading into the season imo. At this point, it makes sense to trust Michigan's player development and assume guys will emerge
Good level-headed discussion on this part of the thread. Some of us are nervous about this position because we have vowed to “Never Forget” .jpg.
In all honesty, one excellent corner completely changes a game plan. It allows you to use your other resources to bracket the other side of the field. Of course it would be great to have Charles Woodson and Deion Sanders as your two CBs and you can blitz your safeties every down. But that isn't reality for any team. But one corner who can be isolated on the opposition's best received is an incredible assets and allows an average corner on the other side to be supported by scheme. I am much more worried about Will Johnson being %100 by November than I am about the emergence of Ty Law II on the other side of the field. Not to mention we have athletic LB's and good safeties.
Yeah this is my take as well. If Johnson is healthy, we have more than enough skill and coachable upside to get a good result with the scheme we use.
If Johnson is *not* healthy, we may have problems against the better WRs in the league. Like the ones who play for you know who.
So let’s hope he stays healthy.
People are going to find something on the football team to fixate on and there's really not another position to nitpick about on this year's roster. If we aren't going to have 500 thinkpieces on CB2, what are we supposed to discuss? RB3?
Yeah, I really don't get the concern. Hell, last year the two starting corners where Green and Turner and their wound up converting Saintistil over from WR and it all worked out. There is young talent in that backfield and I'm sure they'll be able to pull someone.
Its a schtick. We will be fine at corner.
From the old "can he play DT" days.
Also Rick Snow doesnt think Twill is an all american at the 4 position and Keith Jackson didnt pass recently.
Now he just needs to say “Fuck Michigan” and it is a lock.
Was that the DT from Georgia that decommitted, recommitted, had a solid freshman year then transferred back to Georgia? Forget his name
Aubrey Solomon
Transferred to Tennessee
...and if I recall correctly didn't really crack their starting lineup. Something was off there.
This one is quite a roller coaster ride for sure.
Would happily except him on the team!
Would it be against NIL rules for Howard to call him up and say, "I'll give you 100k for your signature (on a LOI)?"
Aw, who am I kidding? There are no NIL rules.
If UM does it rule against it if anyone else it's all good
As long as he doesn't offer an extra cream cheese for a bagel we are good.
This is all Juwan Howard’s fault….wait…
Beilein farted, and it got carried by the Canadian wildfire smoke all the way to Nkamhoua's nose. It caused him to instantly change his mind. It's the only rational explanation.
Must have had subs and wings.

Josh Wallace. I'Marion Stewart. Boo Carter.
side note: Sam put in a CB for Jordan Shipp earlier today and one for Wallace just now.
Thanks for the translate. Sounds like June will be a great month.
Carter would be quite the surprise. He is universally predicted to Tennessee.
Sam Webb was saying yesterday that despite the handful of Tennessee crystal balls, everything he heard this weekend at the Sound Mind, Sound Body camp is good news for Michigan. Not to mention that Michigan is getting Carter’s last official before his decision
