Purdue goes down to FDU: second 1 to lose to 16
the Matt Painter Experience (TM)
I’m waiting for the MGoPurdue fans to commemorate their amazing season like they did throughout the year while low key shitting on Michigan.
Quite frankly the entire B10 should have been shit on. What an awful display of basketball.

Yessir
Regardless of the specifics of how the game played out, it doesn't feel like an upset.
Or rather it is an upset but not a major, headline-making shock. More like if Minnesota beat Michigan State this past season: a surprise but not totally unexpected.
I’m fairly ambivalent about Purdue but what the fuck are you talking about and why do you have cable news host level of aggrievement?
I’m referring to the slappies who made these threads below while shitting on Juwan and Michigan even comparing Painter to Beilein.

@urbanachiever and @EzekielsCreature, where y’all at?
You have an impressive imagination.

In West Laugheyette?
But seriously dude, we almost lost to FDU as #1 seed back in the day. It's called March Madness for a reason.

My freshman year. Someone (I can't remember if it was Joubert or Rellford said before the game, "I never heard of Harley Dickenson.")
I think that was Roy Tarpley. Thanks for the memory! :)
Around that time an East Coast cousin of mine said that FDU was known as "Fairly Ridiculous" in that part of the world.
You're probably right. I almost threw Tarpley in there.

All hail Lesley rockymore. He saved the day.

In the last three tournaments, Purdue has lost to a 13 seed, 15 seed and 16 seed. At some point you can't just write it off as tournament craziness.
I haven't closely followed college basketball in a seven or eight years but "back in the day" Purdue, Arizona, Virginia and Texas (who did manage to survive their first round game) could all be counted on to flame out spectacularly in the NCAA tournament as high seeds.
It's interesting to see that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Virginia, you say?
Seems appropriate...
Doesn't look coincidental does it? Time to put Purdue into the NCAA Tournament perennial failure pail along with Illinois and Iowa.
Purdon’t
I wish I could find the clip from the TV commentator who described Matt Painter:
"He reminds me of a fat Baldwin brother."

That’s Daniel Baldwin you’re referring to.
I thought people wanted us to be more like Purdue in how we recruit. Well this is the danger
Ouch. They were very good in the regular season and tournament (big).
I was at the bar attached to the hockey and when they lost the whole place burst into applause

i picked FDU to beat purdue. not kidding. my bracket is looking okay right now, though AZ losing hurt.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:05 AM ^
and i have FAU winning this game tonight, too.
my bracket isn't incredible, but fun to get a couple together that were different, especially the FDU over purdue pick.
I have a couple of brackets going at work, but I Purdon’t think one of them is going to do so well now.
I haven’t picked Arizona to win the first round since 1993. Steve Nash cured me forever of that nasty habit.
UVa and Purdue got inaugurated onto that list this weekend.
Man, I can’t wait ‘til next March… 😞
Purdue purdued
Or Purdon’ted
Purdue is a Purdud
Purdue is Purdone
Perdue, past participle conjugation of the French verb perdre: "to lose"...
Speaking of definitions, I propose a new one:
You know how the term "Rutgered" is used on the blog? I forget the exact definition, but it's something about offensive ineptitude, and it's absolutely negative.
I propose a new one: "Purdued." The definition would be "to lose a game you absolutely should win by getting outworked and outhustled, and having your entire team be afraid to take a shot at crunch time."

Purdue Purdidn't
Purdue Purdidn't...
Absolutely worth its own thread.
You and I both clicked it.
Purdue: Pathetic. A whole team, minus Edey, playing scared, no one stepped up, wanted a shot, turnovers galore, just terrible and embarrassing for the B1G
I have read mock drafts past the first 5 (Pistons), is Edey anywhere? Shouldn't he leave for Europe anyways?
Forever to go down in history as Eddy and the bricklayers!

And the new bohemians.
Late in the game with Purdue down by a possession there was a chance at a defensive rebound on an FDU miss. Four Purdue players and one FDU player were within about 8 feet of the ball. The FDU player snatched the ball. It did go out of bounds and the possession was video reviewed to go to Purdue. But damn, that is next level "I got it you take it" stuff and a microcosm of why Purdue lost. That and not being able to hit open shots. Oh, and Edey only getting ONE shot in the last 12 minutes of the game. Criminal. Purdue earned that embarrassing loss.
EDIT: yes, I am bitter because one of my brackets had Purdue winning the championship. F that bracket. This is now a bonafide trend for Painter.
If it makes you feel better, I also had a bracket with Purdue winning it all. I thought the lack of an obvious #1 team, combined with Edey, would give Painter a chance to break a bunch of precedents. I did have that pause in the back of my mind that they'd underperform like always, but never in a million years would I have guessed it would be THIS bad.
Regarding that play. I don't understand why refs are handcuffed in video replay. In this case the ball went off the FDU player but only because he was fouled hard across the arm by Purdue. So, they go to the replay and they can only look at who the ball went off and have to ignore the foul that caused it. Purdue Ball.
I have witnessed this exact scenario multiple times and am starting to think they should be allowed to call that foul and give the ball to FDU.

Embarrassing for Purdue. The Big Ten is doing okay so far.
Unbelievable. I really thought this would be their year to make a decent tournament run for once.
Nope. They're doing the equivalent of what was The Clemsoning: The Purdon'ting.
When it comes to brackets, Purdue is Lucy Van Pelt and I am Charlie Brown.

This is what we get for trusting Purdue in the tournament. They always bow out earlier than they should. I never guessed it would be THIS early, though.
Reminder that in 18 years and 14 tourneys Matt Painter has as many Elite Eight appearances as Juwan. One. Three straight tourneys bounced by double-digit seeds.
Edey took one shot the last 12 minutes. Teammates failed getting him the ball. No one else stepped up.
