JJ McCarthy Discussion Thread
I know he had two pick sixes, and yes, ouch. But oooeeee can JJ McCarthy rope the ball when the receiver is there. For every horrifying moment, there was a moment that would make college-Drew Henson blush.
I really want the Harbaugh saga to end, so one way or another, whoever coaches at Michigan gets the full impact of his final year in college and not let him get away, because my man can throw.
He is going to be really, really good next year. Better than 06 Henne good, but fast.
I am big JJ fan now and I can’t wait to see the ‘23 version.

What is the meaning of this?
January 4th, 2023 at 5:35 PM ^
Someone was bored and had a thought that his ideas were important enough to post on this message board.
I for one agree with him and am now campaigning for OP to be the president of Uranus
January 4th, 2023 at 5:40 PM ^
Agreed....
January 4th, 2023 at 5:47 PM ^
It's kinda strange how we can't discuss michigan football on this board. I know that we see ourselves as above the rest of humanity but it would be cool if we could discuss our team and the players on that team that we root for. Even just a little bit. I mean, without lowering ourselves of course.
January 4th, 2023 at 5:56 PM ^
Sounds like a plan. At 19 years old he has more maturity than 99% of the fans that are supposedly rooting for Michigan...how's that :)
We will see...it may well be that JJ is the best of the group of up-and-coming young QBs. An elite talent.
January 4th, 2023 at 6:05 PM ^
At 19 years old he has more integrity and maturity than the replay officials that hide behind anonymity when they make obviously horrible calls that the entire viewing public can see is wrong. At least he shows up at a press conference and talks about a loss caused, in large part, by his two heinous mistakes.
I've already forgiven those mistakes. He brushed them off in the game and continued to sling dimes deep downfield. He's the reason the game was as close as it was, even if he's the reason it was closer than it should have been. I love the kid! The replay officials? Nope...
January 4th, 2023 at 6:43 PM ^
Just for fun, here is JJ's 1st year starting compared to Trevor Lawrence's:
JJ: 64.6% comp %, 2719 yards, 8.4 Y/A, 22 TD, 5 INT, 155.0 Rating
TL: 65.2% comp %, 3280 yards, 8.3 Y/A, 30 TD, 4 INT, 157.6 rating
Considering how run-dominant the Michigan offense was this year, that's not an unfavorable comparison at all.
January 4th, 2023 at 8:27 PM ^
Though to be fair, that was Trevor Lawrence’s true freshman season and he did it take over as the starter until game 5 of that season. Though he did play quite a bit while splitting time with Bryant.
Not really an apples to apples comparison
January 5th, 2023 at 4:03 PM ^
At 19 JJ has a hotter girlfriend than most of us on this board.
January 4th, 2023 at 6:07 PM ^
Sure, but this isn't really a discussion starter. It's "JJ is cool and I think he'll be good next year" which is fine and all but doesn't really go anywhere interestingly. It's equivalent to someone grabbing a microphone and asking a guest panel "I've got more of a statement than a question" during a Q&A.
Now if you want a discussion topic I'd be interested to hear what fans think will be the biggest change they expect/want to see out of McCarthy (and by extension the offense) next year. Do you expect him to run more, do you think he'll throw more downfield or will he focus more on improving his mid level accuracy? With Edwards coming back as RB1 so you think the RB will become more heavily involved in the passing attack? Or should they stick with a heavy run based offense and just amp up the play action, which was missing for stretches of the year but popped big when they used it?
Those at least feel like discussion topics.
January 4th, 2023 at 6:19 PM ^
I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I want to see Donovan Edwards as the next Marshall Faulk, which would also give JJ an opportunity to sling the ball around. On the other, it would be fun to see a Lightning and Lightning pairing with CJ Stokes or Cole Cabana playing the Felix Jones to Edwards's McFadden.
January 4th, 2023 at 7:09 PM ^
On the front page of the message board alone, if you click into the topics, you'll find literally hundreds of examples of people just making statements, and then other people replying to those statements, and then others replying to those. Ya know, having a conversation.
In real life many MANY conversations are started entirely with someone stating their opinion, no questions asked.
The topic up for discussion is "JJ", you want to talk about a specific topic on JJ then this is an absolutely perfect thread to do that.
Doesn't really feel necessary to snipe at someone and it really looks like you're just doing it to be haughty.
January 4th, 2023 at 9:19 PM ^
Sure. But also, there are also tons of times in life when one person states his or her opinion that nobody asked for, doesn't provide any real context or reason for sharing it, and people sort of smile and say "mmm hmmm" and hope to move on. This being a message board and not an ephemeral conversation this statement is allowed to linger and be reintroduced to a ton of people, hence the negging.
Anyway, I'm sorry if me saying "this is sort of a nothingburger post" offended so many people. It is a nothingburger post but so are a bunch of them.
January 5th, 2023 at 7:41 AM ^
Thanks. "I like Player X and I think he's going to be great next year" without any analysis, is dull, blind hope. It's almost as bad as "We lost to OSU (or whoever) and I feel bad/angry" or "We beat OSU (or whoever) and I am happy/proud"; without analysis of the causes or potential ramifications, it's likewise dull. We're all fans here; these feelings are expected, but without explanation of the reasons, they're not very interesting.
January 4th, 2023 at 8:13 PM ^
Maybe if you provided your email, those thinking about starting a thread could clear it with you first in order to determine whether their ideas are discussion worthy.
January 4th, 2023 at 9:13 PM ^
I would happily provide such a service. I was going to pull a Greta Thunberg here but instead I'll turn it around and ask you if I could get some way to contact you before I post a comment to a thread so as not to come across as too draconian or abusive of my power.
January 5th, 2023 at 11:00 AM ^
Unlike you, I don’t have any interest in policing what anyone else should or should not say.
January 4th, 2023 at 8:47 PM ^
This is a guess but I would bet we spend a lot of practice time working on the run game. With limited official practice time I would think if the coaches came up with a more balanced attack or even leaned slightly to pass and they practiced this way, we would probably be better at it.
January 4th, 2023 at 6:07 PM ^
To me, the issue is that due to the nature of the web site, there's the "front page" that only holds 7 posts. Anything posted goes to the front page, so if your post isn't one of the 7 most interesting/insightful/newsworthy things to happen to Michigan sports today, it's not really front page material. Most of the other sports blogs have a separate, somewhat less visible forum, and the front page content is curated by the owners and moderators, but mgoblog does not.
January 4th, 2023 at 7:15 PM ^
Unless Harbaugh leaves there's going to be like 20 actual news stories about Michigan Sports over the next 8 months and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them will be on the front page of the actual site. I think we'll be OK.
January 4th, 2023 at 10:44 PM ^
Brhino- I'm not sure what you mean by the "front page"? Because the first page of the "MGoBoard" on both my phone and PC has 31 threads/OP's, not including the 9 "stickies". So 40 total threads on the "Front Page". This is indeed "a separate, somewhat less visible forum". This is where all stuff posted by us, the regular users goes to.
As of this writing the last post on the bottom of the first page on the board was created about 48 hrs ago - the Damar Hamlin post from Monday night.
I consider the front page of MGoBlog as the page where the staff such as Brian, Seth, Alex, etc, provides their written content. This is actually a "front page content curated by the owners and moderators". We can only respond in the comments section of these featured articles.
Am I missing a point here? I'm like really confused now.
January 4th, 2023 at 7:35 PM ^
Yeah, their are some uh, odd people on this forum that think they're above the rest of the us.
January 4th, 2023 at 7:42 PM ^
What is there to discuss about this post though? McCarthy had a great season, a couple bad mistakes in the bowl game but his talent shone at other times in the game. Idk how else to say it, there's just nothing to discuss about this post. What would you add to this post?
January 4th, 2023 at 7:34 PM ^
....or how about the Speaker of the House, I hear they are looking for someone???

JJ had a great game
I was happy he had a great game
Some of you don’t think his game has that great because he threw two pick sixes
But it was great, really great, and I’m happy but was so great.
You should be happy to. It was really great.
Discuss.

If you can’t handle a post just discussing the awesomeness and/or the future of a great Michigan player it seems odd to be on a Michigan blog.

Shea Patterson’s brother? Is that you?JJ has all of the potential. He has been good, not great. He has a great fastball, he needs some other pitches though. Also needs to work on his accuracy.
This is maybe the worst thread of the week and that includes all of the Harbaugh speculation threads.
January 4th, 2023 at 6:59 PM ^
I just think you're missing some nuance. You essentially posted:
- two pick sixes = ouch
- he can rope the ball
- equal ratio of horrifying moments to great moments
- the coach of Michigan football will get to coach JJ (& "not let him get away" but I'm not sure what that means)
- he is going to be really, really good next year
- he is going to be better than '06 Henne but (ed: I think you mean "and") also fast
That's not a discussion - that's just a combination of some obvious things about JJ and how you're excited about it.
Prompting a discussion would be something like
- What's the ceiling for JJ's junior year given what we saw this year? Is it fair to expect 'Heisman finalist' given the returning team & schedule?
- Is a comparison to [some other quarterback's maturation] fair?
- Is [x,xxx] yards a fair goal?
- Do you want to see him more involved in the running game, less, or roughly the same as this year?
January 4th, 2023 at 7:17 PM ^
Are you trying to tell us that not once has a conversation started with a pointed statement?
Because I can show literally hundreds of examples from the front page of the board alone that would completely disagree with you.
Normal people start conversations with statements literally ALL THE TIME.
January 4th, 2023 at 7:40 PM ^
I think the issue some here are taking is that if everyone who read/posted here were to post their random thoughtsl, the board would become an unreadable mess. See:comment sections on most posts. So there is an unwritten rule enforced by the regular contributors here that something should be “thread-worthy” in order to be posted, thus maintaining the high value of the board for all. While I’m not particularly worked up about the OP, I also understand why this is the case, as I would frequent the blog less if every Tom Dick or Harriet was posting their ShowerThoughts(TM) on Michigan Sports as a new thread.
January 4th, 2023 at 8:17 PM ^
Are you talking about topics like “Friday Posbang” and “What Are You Eating and Drinking” for the Game? And when does the Regular Contributors Club meet to determine these rules?
January 4th, 2023 at 7:46 PM ^
Okay, so go ahead, continue the conversation. JJ had a great season, a couple mistakes in the bowl game, and we're looking forward to seeing him be even better next season. What do you add to that?
It's like going into a room full of people and shouting, hey the weather was nice today, not too cold and sunny! Okay, great, everyone agrees but what discussion does this prompt? What normal person or group of persons is going to continue that thread of "discussion" and have a conversation about it?
January 4th, 2023 at 7:44 PM ^
What does this post discuss? He had a great season, threw two picks in the bowl game and we're excited for next season. Great. Now what? There's literally nothing to discuss about this.
January 4th, 2023 at 9:56 PM ^
Dude. Your post was basically “JJ is awesome. I think he’s awesome because he’s just awesome. Do you think he’s awesome too?”
Not exactly thought provoking commentary here.

Best QB I've seen at UM. Henson was a stud. Henne was awesome but McCarthy has the arm and the legs amd the moxie.

Apparently someone doesn't remember Jack Kennedy
January 4th, 2023 at 6:56 PM ^
Jack frequently forgot to bring his bowtie to black tie dinners. And his brother, Bobbie, used to not-so-gently tease him for doing so. It's why you would typically see one waiter with an open collar at the affair.
January 4th, 2023 at 9:28 PM ^
Darker, you’re no Jack Kennedy
