Lmao ok, Jim
August 27th, 2022 at 7:53 PM ^
It's a great decision considering the schedule. Put your JJ man boner away for 2 seconds and just be happy that we have options.
Or just watch old tape and scream at your TV for John O'Korn to come in after watching Wilton Speight miss guys by 5 yards.
Let me know how that works out.
Actually, I already do, spoiler alert...O'Korn ends up being even worse. But at least you had one QB!
August 27th, 2022 at 8:12 PM ^
I am of the mindset that if you have 2 QBs, you have none, but we have 2 QBs. Comparing McCarthy to OKorn is a bit unfair to JJ, the situation may be similar, I don’t think the talent level is similar. I guess you can have your hot take..
August 27th, 2022 at 8:36 PM ^
Comparing Cade to Speight is equally as unfair…
August 28th, 2022 at 7:02 AM ^
Actually, McNamara’s numbers for 2021 were remarkably similar to 2016 Speight:
McNamara: 210-327, 2,576 yards, 15 TDS, 6 INTs;
Speight: 204-331, 2,538 yards, 18 TDS, 7 INTs;

In our situation 2QB/no QB may be a small advantage as the opposing defense don't know for whom to prepare.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:10 PM ^
Was just about to post. An interesting strategy to say the least.
If Cade goes nuts in Week 1, is he going to be happy ceding the job to JJ in Week 2? If JJ struggles and Michigan ends up in a game in Week 2, do they go back to Cade and avoid disaster?
August 27th, 2022 at 6:27 PM ^
Starting is more symbolic than anything else. Both will play about the same amount through the first three games.

August 27th, 2022 at 6:28 PM ^
Is there a scenario in which JJ outperforms cade?
August 27th, 2022 at 6:32 PM ^
Give him 30 pass attempts and lets see how it works out.
August 27th, 2022 at 7:03 PM ^
It would seem like a huge fail if he doesn't. Have you read Alex's opponent posts? Hawaii sounds like it might be an all time horrible defense. ZERO returning guys on the two deep at five secondary spots?!?
We're not really going to learn anything in weeks 1 and 2. Won't learn anything until Iowa, probably.
August 27th, 2022 at 8:34 PM ^
Definitely. I’d also argue that if their performances are similar, you go with the guy that has higher upside.
The question remains to be whether they’re so close together because they’re both performing so well, or if it’s because the coaches are trying to weigh Cade’s steady hand with JJ’s high risk/high reward play. If it’s the former, I definitely lean towards the guy with more upside. If it’s the latter, it depends on the gap between the risk vs reward and what you’re getting from your steady hand.
August 28th, 2022 at 10:35 AM ^
With our offense higher floor at the QB position is more important. We are stacked at every position group, we don't need a superhero QB. We need a consistent QB who's going to let lineman, backs and ends win the game for us.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:37 PM ^
Much more likely that Cade is slow and steady, just fine, leads a lot of scoring drives.
And then JJ goes nuts in week 2.
August 27th, 2022 at 7:05 PM ^
Fake drama, dude
August 27th, 2022 at 7:54 PM ^
If Cade was the starter in both games...do you think he'd be left in if he struggles with JJ on the bench?
Think, people, THINK.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:11 PM ^
Getting weird with it. I guess you can do that when the first three games are glorified practices. But I guess I like it. It seems a better test than alternating series and getting no one in a rhythm
August 27th, 2022 at 6:14 PM ^
That's my thought as well.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:24 PM ^
I’m sure they are both going to play plenty of snaps in each game.
August 27th, 2022 at 8:21 PM ^
I'm pretty sure both are going to be playing a lot whatever the outcome of the first two games. I don't think this means a full time QB is being determined by these two games.
August 27th, 2022 at 8:06 PM ^
Appalachian State was a glorified practice
August 27th, 2022 at 8:15 PM ^
No it wasn't.
People who have no idea about college football just told you that (unless you're one of those people).
Just like if we played NDSU, it wouldn't be a glorified practice.
That App St. team was legit. Just like some of those Wentz/Lance NDSU teams.
That loss shouldn't have happened, but people acting like it was some impossible feat are morons.
That App St. team was legit, it would've finished in the top half (top 60) of FBS.
That was like that Michigan team losing to Indiana.
August 27th, 2022 at 8:56 PM ^
I think it was a better loss than 2007 Indiana, frankly. I'd say it's more like losing to 2007 Cincinnati. Great WR (Gilyard), solid QB (Mauk, Edwards was better), and Kelly at the helm.
Honestly, we straight-up didn't have the roster to deal with that type of offense—and we had it our first two games. Ezeh wasn't a linebacker who could handle misdirection. Neither was Mouton because of his over-commitment problems. Warren and Trent were good (especially Warren), but trying to tackle in run support while covering a receiver like Dexter Jackson was a fool's errand.
The 4th down call in the second quarter was a bad one, and it was based on a TERRIBLE sequence from Mike DeBord.
We've re-hashed this into oblivion, but it makes WAY more sense that we lost this game in hindsight.
August 28th, 2022 at 1:53 AM ^
Ezeh wasn't a linebacker who could handle anything. He must have been incredible in team meetings to play as much as he did.
August 28th, 2022 at 11:14 AM ^
I think it was like the 1st time we saw a spread offense and we had no clue.
It’s like we did not scout them and we did not adjust in game. We had big relatively slow LBs chasing speed all day long.
App State was a really good team but we got schooled in X and Os.

I did not say Appy State wasn't legit. Also never stated that I thought losing to Appy was impossible so don't call me a moron
I was at the game - you?
We came out like it was a practice and got served. Lloyd Carr retired in place a couple of years early and Appy State was indicative of that.
NO ONE that day thought we had a chance to lose to Appy State, and it looked like that included the coaching staff
You (and others) can neg away but I was there. Season ticket holder since 1986, but yeah, I know nothing about college football
August 27th, 2022 at 8:39 PM ^
Appalachian St won two FCS National Championships in a row just before they played Michigan. And they won it again that year. They were a dynasty.
August 27th, 2022 at 10:10 PM ^
Michigan's worst loss was to Toledo. A team so bad that they fired their coach at the end of the year. Appalachian State won 3 NC"s in a row. They beat a Joe Flacco led Delaware in the NC the year they beat us.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:11 PM ^
I feel bad for Colorado State and Hawaii. Both QBs are going to explode in order to win that job.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:58 PM ^
Well, it probably means we won't break the rushing TD record against either school. So at least they've got that going for them.
August 27th, 2022 at 7:04 PM ^
I’m not sure you know how Jim Harbaugh operates.
August 28th, 2022 at 3:13 PM ^
You must not have been watching Harbaugh led Michigan teams in blowout wins if you think he's going to air it out. My bet is that we'll throw 15 to 20 times tops, and pound it out on the ground as we usually do.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:12 PM ^
JJ will start week 3 too.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:35 PM ^
Yes, but Drew Henson is the future of the program
August 27th, 2022 at 6:35 PM ^
I was just kidding, I don’t care if Cade or JJ starts. Just win.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:38 PM ^
Not if Georgie has anything to say about it.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:45 PM ^
You think Cade looked better against Georgia than JJ did?
August 27th, 2022 at 7:08 PM ^
He's making a George Steinbrenner joke (Yankees signed Henson, causing him to skip his senior season).
August 27th, 2022 at 8:27 PM ^
Sorry ham, I am (fairly) young. I was born in 1993 and don’t remember any of that.
August 27th, 2022 at 7:57 PM ^
They weren't playing against the same units and the same time and against the same play calls.
By the time JJ got extensive time, 2nd team guys were getting run and UGA was base everything just trying to keep the clock moving.
JJ could very well be better...that game isn't the best example.
August 27th, 2022 at 8:44 PM ^
I think JJ gt in when the game was already decided in Georgia's mind.
Some people point to the 1st Half of the Georgia game and find fault with Cade McNamara. But really, where was the run game in the 1st Half?
August 27th, 2022 at 8:58 PM ^
Which is the point. McNamara needs a strong run game because he doesn’t have the tools to carry the team with his arm.
August 27th, 2022 at 11:47 PM ^
It’s impossible to judge anything about the Georgia game because that defense was historically great.
August 27th, 2022 at 7:17 PM ^
That’s not the joke you think it is. Henson was crazy talented. Still the last Michigan QB to win in Columbus. It sucks that Steinbrenner lured him away his senior year.
August 27th, 2022 at 8:29 PM ^
That was 23 years ago.
cade is not Tom Brady.
August 27th, 2022 at 8:52 PM ^
But is Cade who Tom Brady was as UM's QB is the question. We know what Brady is now...can't compare him to that.
August 27th, 2022 at 9:04 PM ^
cade did not outperform a future nfl in camp and still have to sit behind him.
cade absolutely does not have Tommy’s arm. He doesn’t have his size.
it’s such a lazy and misused comparison.
why can’t it just be a cade and jj situation. Shit, it’s more of a cade vs Milton situation than Tom and Drew
August 28th, 2022 at 2:21 AM ^
Brady was a really good QB at Michigan. Cade may play really well this year, but its unfair all around to expect or wait for Tom Brady to reappear.
August 27th, 2022 at 6:12 PM ^
In todays world you have to make you’re backup QB happy. I like the approach, here’s to a healthy dual between our two QBs. May the best QB win.
