James Ross III DC at DIII Hope College
Not sure what his coaching goals are, but JRIII just got promoted from LB coach to defensive coordinator. Small school, but it’s a step!

Boo this man. Booooo ?
February 14th, 2022 at 4:34 PM ^
calvin doesn't even have football.
February 14th, 2022 at 5:03 PM ^
Undefeated since 1876!
February 14th, 2022 at 5:05 PM ^
But they do have the Five Points.

A New York slum before the Civil War?
February 14th, 2022 at 9:01 PM ^
Not that Five Points...
February 15th, 2022 at 1:16 AM ^
Predetermined perpetual underdogs?
February 14th, 2022 at 5:49 PM ^
Maybe it's a major typo, with illustrations, and it actually refers to Calvinists, aka, Calvinites.
February 15th, 2022 at 8:45 AM ^
Do they at least have Calvinball?
February 15th, 2022 at 10:39 AM ^
They do. Calvin and Hope both have excellent basketball programs that historically dominate the conference (up until recent years, although this season they're both at the top again). They play each other tomorrow night for basically who wins the conference, as they're each tied at the top.
February 15th, 2022 at 1:04 PM ^
But only one has National Championships (2).
February 14th, 2022 at 9:36 PM ^
I seem to remember reading that Calvin U (C?) was making plans to start a football program. Is that still a plan?
February 15th, 2022 at 10:40 AM ^
Not any time soon. But you are correct in that about a decade or so ago they had serious plans to, but it ultimately got shot down by faculty senate.

Calvin class of ‘96, and married to a Hope grad (lol) whom I met at work, so I can say both Go Knights and go Pete Stuursma (who my oldest two had as their principal at EGRMS, total respect). Good luck Coach Ross!
February 14th, 2022 at 4:26 PM ^
Go Flying Dutchmen ?. Class of ‘04
congrats to mr. Ross!
February 15th, 2022 at 2:43 PM ^
I heard they won their conference championship last season. Next stop perhaps a position coach at U of M. He's a stand up guy who deserves a shot.
February 14th, 2022 at 4:33 PM ^
i would gladly have any of my sons play for pete stuursma, the head coach. great guy. we met a bunch of the players in the recruiting cycle a couple of years ago and i was equally impressed with them. james ross III is in a very good place. go blue, go dutchmen.
February 14th, 2022 at 5:29 PM ^
I will second your comments regarding Stuursma. Great dude.

I bet the Dutch will have a stingy defense.
February 14th, 2022 at 5:58 PM ^
There are two things in the world I can't stand: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures... and the Dutch.
February 14th, 2022 at 6:14 PM ^
If you ain’t dutch
you ain’t much
(not Dutch….)
February 14th, 2022 at 8:55 PM ^
I am Dutch and my mom hails from Holland, I use this saying frequently.
My dad was once in a bar in Holland and struck up a convo with the guy next to him. At one point my dad cracks a joke- "why do the Dutch wear wooden shoes? To keep the woodpeckers off their head!" The conversation ended at that point.
We are a proud people.

That’s a cheap joke

I hope he does well, and this is a great start! Hope spring eternal!

Even a blind mutant clown stumbles on a small child every now and then.
February 14th, 2022 at 4:52 PM ^
I work at a competitor and Hope kicks our ass annually in football, so I only expect the ass kickings to become more intense. Honestly very hard to get worked up over D3 football (or that's my excuse anyway...). At least we're a better academic school, lol. Good luck to Ross!

Only school fitting that description is Kalamazoo…Glad to hear fellow MIAA people on the board! I played and graduated from Hope in ‘08.
February 14th, 2022 at 9:38 PM ^
Albion is in that discussion albeit with a much better football team.
February 14th, 2022 at 9:51 PM ^
Yes, definitely an even match in football and not a school I would say is “better” academically. Kalamazoo is without a doubt the only school I’d say is better academically. Using deduction, I say Kalamazoo and the Battle for the Wooden Shoes!
February 14th, 2022 at 11:16 PM ^
Have you ever worn a wooden shoe?
February 15th, 2022 at 1:46 AM ^
Larry Bell just bet $5.25 million on K College about a week ago.
.
February 15th, 2022 at 8:22 AM ^
Larry Bell dropped out to start brewing, but we're still very happy to claim him as an alum!
February 15th, 2022 at 10:44 AM ^
Class of '08 eh, I went to your rival school. Couldn't stand Van Solkema. Or Van Wieren. Cramer would kill us. same as Reimink, and Wolfe. You assholes could shoot.
February 15th, 2022 at 9:35 AM ^
K College? I played at Hope for 4 years and we never lost the Wooden Shoes to K. Great academically though! And yes, Ross is in a great place with Sturrs as the head man!
February 14th, 2022 at 5:29 PM ^
Born and raised in Holland. Father was a long time professor at Hope. Wish JR111 the best.
February 14th, 2022 at 5:51 PM ^
Now in Medford, Oregon?
If so, near my old (temporary) stomping grounds.
February 14th, 2022 at 7:56 PM ^
Yep. Applegate Valley near Ruch on the Applegate river.
February 14th, 2022 at 9:01 PM ^
I was stationed on the Diamond Lake District of the Umpqua National Forest, fighting fires in Oregon and Washington. Plus I drove past Medford to go see a show in Ashland.
February 14th, 2022 at 9:12 PM ^
My youngest son was a fire hotshot for a couple of fire seasons for the state. Bless all the wild fire fighters.
February 15th, 2022 at 6:55 AM ^
Are the fires or fighters wild? I say both!
February 14th, 2022 at 6:02 PM ^
Nice! Very cool. Congrats, James!
February 14th, 2022 at 6:19 PM ^
Good luck to James
February 14th, 2022 at 6:22 PM ^
Slightly OT - but here goes - at these smaller schools, D3, where the talent level is thinner and possibly more equal (?), does coaching make a bigger difference?
February 14th, 2022 at 7:22 PM ^
Uh . . no. Resources between schools are completely different, even within conferences. If you think the CFP is bad, look at the D3 playoffs. There really are only about 5-7 schools that have had a legitimate national title shot in the last 30 years (UW-Whitewater, Mount Union, Mary Hardin Baylor, North Central and maybe a few others). I would say recruiting is 90% of it and coaching is 10% at that level.
