Hawkins and Hutchinson were awesome.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:48 PM ^
Hawkins MIP and Hutch is MVP.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:27 AM ^
Hawkins got an MIP? He must be over 21 by now.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:31 AM ^
Haha yeah he is probably older than me now. He just looked so much better than his previous 5 years. Maybe he is just better without Zordich.

Hutchinson is a special talent.
Need DBs to make plays on the ball, could have also used some more inside pass rush from the DL.
Other than that, I’ll take it!
September 12th, 2021 at 8:42 AM ^
You can say that again.

Don't forget the return of Josh Ross. The linebackers had some iffy moments last week, but Ross and NH-G both looked great today.
September 12th, 2021 at 11:45 AM ^
Hutchinson has been absolutely unleashed in Macdonald's defense compared to Brown's defense. If he keeps this up, he's a high first round pick
September 11th, 2021 at 11:44 PM ^
Hutchinson is a fucking animal
September 12th, 2021 at 10:00 AM ^
Turn those words around and you've got an arrest on your hands--or a buckeye fan.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:45 PM ^
Solid play by many players. Hutch and Hill are special. Hawkins is solid. Ross had his best game. Go blue!
September 11th, 2021 at 11:48 PM ^
Very worried about the secondary. There was space everywhere and even when DBs were near the receiver, they often didn't get their head around
September 11th, 2021 at 11:48 PM ^
Not sure what to make of the pass D. They gave up a lot of yards but it also seemed like players were right there on a lot of those passes. Wonder what UFR will have to tell us.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:12 AM ^
No there wasn’t. UW’s receivers made plays. Only when UM was up 3 scores did the field open up for UW. Outside of Jackson’s reception most catches were contested.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:13 AM ^
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. The secondary is clearly improved but still has a long ways to go.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:27 AM ^
Not sure why you’re getting negged. You aren’t way off. Pass D was obviously horrible last year, and while it seems to be improved, it still fair to say you have concerns, especially your point about guys being in position but not getting their head around. A team that supposedly can’t throw the ball just put up 300 yards passing. If the d line doesn’t get to the QB within a couple seconds, yards can be had on this secondary. Time will tell.
September 12th, 2021 at 9:27 AM ^
I’m actually feeling better about the corners. They are decent, considering it’s the first 2 games in a new scheme. We now have some zone looks that we never ran under DB. They will start reacting instead of overthinking soon.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:50 PM ^
Played well so far but who knows since competition has been a meh MAC team and the PAC 12 version of Illinois.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:52 PM ^
Incomplete.
Did what they needed to, mostly shut down a bad offense.
A couple of worrying signs when Washington really reared back to pass. Remains to be seen how that translates against a real P5 offense, something Michigan hasn't actually played yet.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:35 AM ^
"A couple of worrying signs when Washington really reared back to pass."
I felt that, too.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:26 PM ^
Im a little worried too about the CB being able to make a play when they need to. On the positive note, they are doing a better job of sticking to a receiver but when it comes time to turn thier head and spot the ball to knock it away...... eh..... a work in progress....
Fortunately, we will not face a pass heavy offense until Maryland and a pass heavy offense with a decent QB until OSU......
September 13th, 2021 at 4:32 PM ^
Not sure there are that many 'real P5' offenses on the schedule. The D looks good enough to give the team a chance against every team on the schedule. Obviously the last game will be the biggest challenge and there may not be a D in the country that can actually shut that team down. Its going to take an all phases effort to have a shot against those guys.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:52 PM ^
Defense made some big stops and Hutchinson is huge. Secondary looks a little shaky.
September 12th, 2021 at 10:27 AM ^
Ackshually, Hutchinson slimmed down from his last year's playing weight.
September 12th, 2021 at 8:17 PM ^
I am in no way an expert, but the interior DL seemed a bit weak
is that the result of the scheme (to take on blockers freeing up DE and LB’s?) or inexperience or am I completely off base?
September 11th, 2021 at 11:52 PM ^
Washington threw the ball too easily in the second half. The secondary needs to play better moving forward.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:47 PM ^
Yeah, but I’m not as concerned with the aggregate 2nd half as I am in a couple isolated plays. Moore and Green both failed to turn their heads to get in a position to make the play.
But if Michigan were down 24-3 and then started seeing success throwing, we’d read all kinds of posts about how it was garbage time against conservative secondaries.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:54 PM ^
Great gameplan and I'm officially excited about the defensive line. Hutchinson has to get defensive player of the week for the conference at least this week.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:55 PM ^
Double post, sorry.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:55 PM ^
Hutchinson was great. The Defense completely shut down the W running game. Washington has talent. It was a great win. Expecting them to grow and improve as Coach MacDonald has time with this team. Joss Ross and D line played terrific. Dax played well too and got banged up in middle of game but hung in tough.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:56 PM ^
I'm worried. Washington isn't a good offense yet our DBs still looked pretty bad for the most part.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:00 AM ^
Washington SHOULD be a pretty good offense. 3 INT last week crushed them.
Michigan’s D was solid tonight.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:02 AM ^
Montana wouldn’t have stopped Bynum and Gibson either. They are still missing two others, one who will be back at some point. I think the Washington pass offense will be fine this year, their running game is a different story. I guess offensively, we are polar opposites. The cushions on receivers are way too much and we are lost in the zone but several times our players are right there and just barely missing plays
September 12th, 2021 at 4:11 PM ^
Washington’s QB got better and dropped some dimes in solid coverage. Also 2nd half the coverage got softer, instead of man up the corners were 6-8yds off the ball. Still need to be better, get their heads around and hands in the rec catch basket… but otherwise solid night. Definite room to improve.
September 12th, 2021 at 4:54 PM ^
For the most part our DBs actually looked pretty good. Hill and Hawkins would play for anybody. I am very pleased to see Vincent Gray look good.
September 11th, 2021 at 11:57 PM ^
I don't know if the secondary can stop a team with a good passing attack. But the run defense looked pretty solid tonight.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:01 AM ^
Impressive job, would like to see more turnovers.. Sorry.. Any turnovers. Taking the running game away was awesome. Didn't love wrs flying open in the second half but great job. When they had all that early momentum, would be great to get some backbreaking turnovers and pile on.. We're going to play some better teams so let's get that ball!!
September 12th, 2021 at 12:03 AM ^
Hutchinson is a monster but there's no pass rush outside of him. M hasn't had good DTs since Mo Hurst and Ryan Glasgow. Outside corners are going to get roasted when it matters most.
September 12th, 2021 at 1:52 PM ^
Mr. Ojabo would like a word. That spin move sack in the 4th quarter was slick.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:03 AM ^
UW vs Montana: 291yd/31.47 min = 9.25ypm
UW vs Mich: 343yd/25.67 min = 13.36ypm
We gave up 45% more ypm than Montana.
We've got some players, and we do some good things, but they were much more able to gash us than a non-elite FCS team
September 12th, 2021 at 12:08 AM ^
YPM? That isn’t even a thing.
Stop it.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:19 AM ^
Young Penguin Minds?
September 12th, 2021 at 12:16 AM ^
If you want to cherry pick a really bad yet pointless stat, look at UW yards per minute in just the 4th quarter.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:21 AM ^
"non-elite FCS team"
Can we revisit this at the end of the season? Montana won 42-7 tonight.
September 12th, 2021 at 12:32 AM ^
Translation....UW played from behind, threw lots of incompletes, and couldn't punch it in, maybe.
September 12th, 2021 at 6:42 AM ^
False. Analytics must find different ways to show our ineptitude. The scoreboard is arbitrary. /mgoblog
September 12th, 2021 at 10:09 AM ^
Invisible Style Points Scoreboard visible only to mgoblog users clearly shows Michigan loss. /s
September 12th, 2021 at 5:28 PM ^
It's pretty bad when you have to make up a new stat to bitch. Says things, about things (you).
September 12th, 2021 at 12:05 AM ^
Vincent Gray..still bad in pass coverage. Good WR’s will continue to eat him alive. Dax Hill has taken that jump to the next level as a Junior. He’s been everywhere on the field. Hutch IS the pass rush. Not much else from the rest of the team. Overall, the first half was great, the 2nd half exposed some holes. OSU can easily put up 40 on the team.
