Harbaugh: No red items or beverages allowed at workouts or practice.

I prefer blue or grape Gatorade anyway. No skin off my bones.
Sorry for the mgoposters who get irrationally mad at things like this but also get mad when they don't happen.
I love it!!!
6.5 years late for installing some passion into what was a rivalry, I guess better late than never!
This comment came 15 minutes later than I expected when I saw the OP posts.
Maybe he'll start calling them only 'Ohio' as the next gimmick?
Why not? Hoke has a better track record against OSU than Harbaugh, FWIW.
Agreed. It's a start.
More like last ditch effort.
I think we can also try selling Michigan jerseys in ohio. That might work.
So now we get our ass kicked by OSU and you cannot drink a can of Coke. SMH
clown comment
Seems silly but whatever. Just win.
Maybe OSU will respond in kind and refuse to let any blue chips on their team?
Ok, this really made me laugh. You win the internet today.
Agreed. Both of you get a +1.
Nah, they'll just douse shoe polish head with red Gatorade if they win the game this year and he'll look like Rudy Guiliani.
You know OSU has been doing the exact same thing for years, right?
If you think it’s silly, all I think they’d do is tell you to look at the scoreboard from the last two decades. Granted, this action by itself isn’t enough to win, but establishing that mentality that OSU clearly has, of having the utmost hatred and contempt for everything OSU is, that has to be ingrained into everything Michigan is, every act it takes, every decision it makes, all has to go towards answering the question of “does this help us beat OSU?”
One is organic and one is inorganic and that makes all the difference my friend.
Okay well what do you suggest? Because doing nothing or changing nothing clearly isn’t going to work. I agree the act by itself isn’t going to win games, but it Seems like some people are just going to be unhappy no matter what Harbaugh decides to do or not do.
Its something new and it’s not like Michigan can be embarrassed in this rivalry anymore than it already is. What do they have to lose?
It was my hope that when Jim Harbaugh came to coach at Michigan - someone who played in and won The Game and was brought up around The Game - that it’s importance would’ve been appropriately stressed. Apparently that wasn’t the case so now we need countdown clocks and banning of red Gatorade. It’s manufactured, it’s silly and it’s meaningless. But whatever floats your boat. I’m not mad about it, just sad that this is where we are.
This is literally no different than OSU crossing out the M in every word.
Doesn’t matter if it’s manufactured. If it works, then who cares? I’m sure plenty of people rolled their eyes at Tressel when he did this twenty years ago, and now everyone in Ohio shuts up and falls in line.
Again, I’ll readily admit this by itself doesn’t win games, but if it is a step in the right direction then who are we to complain?
yes, and...the team turns over every four years, so it makes sense to start a change in approach to get the newest players oriented to the goal in a dramatic manner.
It sounds lame, but essentially only to those of us who are not 18 years old and have seen things play out.
Why not do it? I think we already have seen the worst that can hapen.
Urban was the one that instituted the "nobody can wear blue" policy at OSU. No blue pens for coaches. No blue anything. It was a suggestion of Kirk Barton when he was a grad assistant. Lou Holtz came to the practice facility just to visit and see Urban. He was wearing a blue jacket and Urban made him go change out of it before he could come out to the practice field.
If you are going to commit to this stuff, you have to fully commit. it can't just be gatorade. You need to ban everything red. Coaches can't be wearing red shoes the day after this is announced. That is the difference between the two schools. Fully commit or it's pandering.
Where are the people who are unhappy about no red Gatorade that you are replying to?
How about getting a new coach! Someone who this fanbase AND the elite recruits can get behind. The fans AND the elite recruits have seen his results for the last 6 years and we all are not impressed.
Most elite recruits aren't interested in Michigan.
Just like I said.
Do you have anyone in mind?
East German acts as if Michigan only started to lose OSU because of Harbaugh. We were shitty under the last three coaches too... Simply getting a new coach won't change shit.
So using that logic, we should keep this coach forever. BTW, the last 3 coaches never gave up 50 or 60 points in consecutive games and 2 of the 3 actually beat OSU.
As someone who wanted Harbaugh let go, simply getting a new coach isn’t going to change the fact that 50% of the top 100 recruits go to one of 4-5 schools, and OSU happens to be one of those schools. Getting a new coach isn’t going to magically make Michigan one of those 4-5 schools either.
This is an issue that goes FAR beyond “get a new coach.” And it’s an issue that reaches far beyond just the city limits of Ann Arbor.
Something like a new found focus on the rivalry goes a lot further than just getting a new coach.
The new playoff format could change that.
Players have started flocking to a handful of schools because that is the only way to get into the playoff. Every year it's Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and one other team. This has happened mostly in the era of top 4 get in--rest play exhibition games.
With the playoff expanded to 12 teams, I think you'll see a little movement on that front. It should make other teams relevant again, and maybe every blue chipper doesn't want to wait or share playing time if they can go elsewhere and still win.
But again, that isn’t “getting a new coach” to make the team relevant again. Harbaugh would have two playoff appearances under his belt already in the new format. A new coach isn’t going to put us in the same conversation with OSU when it comes to recruits. A lot has to happen and change for that.
Considering that 2016 was the last time we were in the top ten at the end of the year, there's no guarantee that playoff expansion means we are going to make a playoff. Maybe the 2 Big Ten teams that make it to Indy get in. But until we beat OSU, that won't be us.
Honestly, I could give two craps about OSU. Maybe we should outlaw the color cups of all the teams we should beat but lose to.
Yes.
It’s stupid and childlike.
We don't operate that way, nor do we want to. They like that kind of shit. Win or lose, we're not into it.
It is silly. But it's the kind of silliness that makes college athletics fun, and can serve as a motivator and shared experience that can help teams come together, focus, and win.
Focus. It's so important!
Red drinks and items are for winners.
Glad to see Harbaugh is finally taking a stand against communism.
I would characterize the OSU program as unfettered capitalism.
I don't know. Their boosters sure do like to distribute their wealth. ?♂️
But they do it voluntarily.
Zach Smith would object to the unfettered characterization.
I like the commitment to winning.
Wisconsin red too. That game AT Wisconsin is going to be tough.
Indiana too and they won for the first time in like 30+ years.
Ahhh, that game.
Figured this was aimed more at Maryland/Indiana/Rutgers.
/s
Glad to see Harbaugh pumping some more animosity into THE rivalry..we'll have to wait until November to see how it worked out.
