Post-MSU Snowflake Thread
Get well soon Eli. This team has no depth without you.
Seems like teams have figured out the offense a bit especially since Illinois. Need some more creativity. Livers is MIA. Franz has been sloppy as of late.
Figure M has to be the 4th #1 at this point unless it gets farther in the BIG Tourney than Illinois.
Get well Eli.
Win the third game against State, nothing wrong with 2-1 (I'm pretty confident they'll beat Rutgers, their likely opponent).
I'm taking cuts to say:
Too bad Loyer is injured, we could have really used him today.
But what really lost the game for us was shit FT shooting and Livers sucking today.
At least Franz showed up a bit at the end.
Franz and Hunter waited far too long to show up today. They should both be grouped with Livers as no-shows for today’s game.
They play maryland so likely a loss for MSU as they can't win away from home
If Brooks is out, this team will not go too far in both tourneys.
I second this, unfortunately.
Need to get Eli back for the big dance. Sadly, I doubt we make it out of the first weekend without him.
I'm just devastated, man......
Unless it's a minor sprain (which I would have to guess it's not based on the boot), I don't think he's gonna be back. Ankle sprains are bad. Real bad news.
He was walking around in the boot towards the end of the game. Clearly not *that* serious of an injury.
Seems like a 2 week injury. Out next week. Game time decision for Rd 1 of tourney. Wasn’t he in a boot earlier for his injury? That was like 7-10 days out? Anyone remember? Anyone know what ankle/foot it was earlier this season? Same one?
Correct. Team’s ceiling is Sweet 16 without Eli. What a potentially disastrous development.
Wagner evidently joined the walking wounded on the last play of the game, so we screwed.
Eli’s ankle sprain not serious. He will be back for NCAA’s first round of not sooner. Everyone relax.
There was a long time when Michigan would celebrate barely making the tournament while MSU was hanging banners. Be grateful the situations are reversed and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.
Season is a success regardless given the regular season title. The team definitely isn't as bad as the pre-season expectations, but it doesn't seem as great as the #2 ranking either. Funky year, lot of variance especially if Brooks is out for long.
I am kind of surprised at the lack of depth behind Davis and Brown. Johns is what he is. Zeb or TWill need to be serviceable.
Brandon Johns has regressed majorly. Maybe it's the lack of playing time but he contributes very little in the game (especially when we're trailing).
But Isaiah Livers played terribly today. And him missing 2 3s when a 2 would've been enough in either situation is just...AWFUL.
More than anyone else on this team (other than Brandon Johns), Livers should've played like this was the National Championship Game. He's from the state. He knows how much this game means to the program.
He was too busy jokingly jawing Watts all game. They didn’t take this game serious enough until 5 minutes left. MSU players weren’t walking around chumming it up with our guys, they wanted to win.
These are both post-loss overreactions. Johns has faced some of the most extreme position changes from starting as a Beilein wing → backup 5 for Teske → minutes at both wing + 5 in the position most altered by Coach Howard. He's still a solid bench contributor, just inconsistent as most bench guys are.
And if you don't want your 45% senior 3pt shooter putting up wide open late game 3's, I'm not sure what to say. Sometimes they don't go down. Livers has hit plenty of clutch shots in his career, and him being called "terrible" hardly seems worth addressing.
Better take is we sleep walked for 35 min. Woke up last 5, had a chance, but between MSU making some plays/shots and we didn’t is the game (Livers and key FT’s). BUT, if you show up earlier, don’t have to worry about this. Need to play better from the beginning. You let teams hang around, this is what happens.
Yeah there was definitely a 10min stretch or so in the early-to-middle of the 2nd half where the wings seemed content to just sit back and wait for the offense to flow out of the post. Surely the cornerstone of our offense but HD was struggling to get position. Not sure about Howard's NBA offense if the lack of variety there is more on the set calls or the wings getting complacent. Would be interested to see someone smarter than I analyze it.
There is no question that Howard has our program on an up-ward trajectory, but I'm curious to hear why MSU will be a bubble team for the foreseeable future ? Fu#k the midget, but he typically has little trouble recruiting kids good enough to challenge for league titles.
Izzo is 66 years old.
He is going to lose some recruiting luster going up against Coach Howard.
Kids want to go pro, Juwan has 25 years nba experience.
And Martelli > MSU staff. . .
I would be pleasantly surprised if it were that simple/easy.
While I agree, one of the weakest msu teams just beat one of our best teams in years. No sugar coating this was a brutal loss. Michigan with or without Brooks should beat this msu team by double digits .
I wouldn’t go so far as burying MSU after 1 bad year. Yeah Michigan is back and isn’t going anywhere. No, that doesn’t mean MSU’s future is NIT tournaments or early exits from the NCAA tournament.
On the plus side, we didn't lose by 20 this time. Losing by way of 33% shooter Rocket Watts midrange jumpers may be worse.
It's more frustrating but there's not like any structural reasons we lost like in so many other games. He Hauser and Henry made a bunch of bad shots, Michigan missed a bunch of good ones. Sometimes basketball is stupid like that.
Holy shit what a terrible OP.
Big ten is a grind
this game was far more important to state
Michigan is exhausted
Get a grip. It’s a meaningless loss.
This will be a good chance to test the chill-to-stress ratio.
I wouldn’t care about the game if everyone stayed healthy. I don’t know how anyone can be chill though with Eli getting hurt. This team is not a contender without him.
"It’s a meaningless loss."
Fuck this bullshit attitude.
No rivalry game is EVER meaningless. Like Juwan Howard said, "If you think this game is meaningless then you don't understand sports."
He was talking about schmucks like you.
I bet this game would've been super meaningful if we had won.
Michigan blew an opportunity to give Juwan Howard a 3-1 lead over Izzo.
As a fan, I'm hung up on Isaiah Livers not having a good game. He missed 2 3s. (A 2 would've worked in either situation.)
Michigan fans and "meaningless" losses lmao.
Yep. It's infuriating shit.
Bad losses come back to haunt you...and is fodder for trolling.
And don't let any Michigan fan gaslight into thinking this wasn't a bad loss. This is the worst fucking team Izzo has had in roughly 20 seasons. And Michigan didn't beat them in Breslin.

Michigan State had among its worst seasons in recent memory in both Football and Basketball this year. There's just one school they beat in both sports.
Doesn't really compute, does it?
Great post. UM v Msu is NEVER meaningless: not in football, not in basketball, not in quiditch. And those that excuse the game because our guys were tired---so you're saying Msu is better conditioned?
We lost. It sucks. Enjoy the season.
It wasn't "meaningless" but going into the game it was the least meaningful game left on our schedule by a big margin, less important than any game in the Big Ten tourney and far, far less important than any game in the NCAA tourney.
Honestly they only needed to win one of the last three to get the championship and they accomplished that.
This game was State’s entire season on the line. It was going to be difficult to match their intensity when Michigan had already won the B1G. Does it suck to lose to them? Yup it does but don’t put too much stock into it. Michigan will be fine once they stop playing other B1G teams. They all know each other so well.
Don’t compare this to football. Two totally different situations.
If anything this will probably be a positive to serve as motivation to kick their ass if we play them in the B1G tournament.
The worst non-injury outcome is that we padded MSU’s tourney resume with a victory over a top ten team. No one of importance is going to remember the context (meaningless game, compressed schedule, etc.). Which is annoying, but otherwise doesn’t concern us.
Being able to eliminate Sparty's NCAAT hope is meaningless?
Am I in a fucking bizarro world?
If anyone in the athletic department shares your opinion, I want him or her terminated. It's lackadaisical bullshit like this that allowed Sparty to become the major fucking thorn that it is today.
Everything from Johnny Orr blowing the Magic Johnson recruitment to the in-state/national media not hammering Sparty for Izzo's garbage, dirty brand of basketball.
Nope, you’re not and the Illinois loss wasn’t meaningless either. This team is super talented but it often lacks killer instinct. Today, Livers was too busy cutting up every time Watts was at the line instead of wanting to blow them out of the gym. This team lacks a motivator like a Burke or Stauskas, who would’ve bled to put these guys in the tournament grave.
This team is not super talented.
I have to agree with you. I’m fucking pissed off losing to those assholes. I don’t care what the “stakes” are. Losing Brooks on top of it. This was a rough week for this team with a nice bright spot sandwiched.in between.
Losing to State is never meaningless
losing 2 of 3 to MSU and a game 1 big 10 tourney exit and possibly losing our #1 seed.
at that point if we lose to sparty again in 5 days the season looks like one of those car crashes waiting to happen.
Even if Michigan loses out, they're not expected to drop the one seed. No other teams in basketball are close to the one line. OSU would need to win the btt or something crazy like that, and maybe not even then
Your posting history is troll central. Get a life.
and your post history looks like a whiny baby who goes around doing nothing but calling people trolls all day. so kindly fuck off
Worst possible scenario of a game. If you don't want to play, concede, save the starters, and let msu go to the tournament. Instead, we sleepwalked through the entire game, lost one of the two (!!!) guards we have, and STILL lost to the worst msu team in decades, just like the fucking football team.
You could not draw up a more nightmarish scenario than what we saw today. I love Juwan and am happy with the season, but this is two years in a row where they limped into the postseason. We didn't get to see what would've happened last year, but we'll get a chance now. Seasons are made and lost now, and we are not trending in the right direction
“Nightmarish”? Get a grip dude.
My God we have a lot of pathetic whiners in the fanbase.
Nah, we're chill. Apparently.
It sucks to have shown some cracks in the armor with 2 of 3 but Illinois lost to this MSU team and was "trending down" too. No reason we can't flip it into another positive trend like we had for the other 80% of the season.
