I don't know how to embed tweets, sorry. If this is true he will miss the Michigan game in his 21 day sit out window.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:06 PM ^
Why is the window that big?
October 25th, 2020 at 6:09 PM ^
Seriously that window sounds like a major overreaction to a positive test. Should be 14 days at most and 10 sounds most reasonable. I know we're trying to minimize outbreaks but 21 days is ridiculous. I guarantee that rule is going to bite Michigan at some point this season.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:12 PM ^
The B1G is the only conference with a window this massive. It is because they are wanting to do a very extensive work up of cardiac tests to rule out cardiomyopathy before a return of action.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:14 PM ^
Because anyone that tests positive needs time to be assessed for longer-term issues than just "has virus in system". It might be a little over-cautious, but I'd much rather have them err on that side when it comes to player health.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:45 PM ^
I'm with you, BlockM. This season is a throw-away anyway, and I'm on board with being overly cautious for player health if that means we get to watch football. No reason to be risky just to be a tough more competitive during a season that really counts for nothing.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:58 PM ^
Maybe if we get enough Michigan fans saying this season is worthless, we can reverse jinx ourselves into a national championship. Heck, I’d take a big 10 championship with a massive asterisk at this point.
October 26th, 2020 at 12:31 PM ^
I'm curious as to why we don't do this with other viruses. There is some evidence that certain flu outbreaks have about a 10% incidence of myocarditis though we have few studies since we don't test for it very often (or almost ever) after the flu. If it's so important to do it for Covid-19, shouldn't every single athlete who gets the flu be out an extended period of time to allow a full work-up? It's inconsistencies like these that drive a portion of our population insane. This isn't saying Covid-19 is like the flu in other terms, because clearly it is not. We do know, however, that it does cause temporary heart issues in a percentage of people.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:31 PM ^
Gee, I guess the B1G should hire you to tell the doctors and the university presidents how to do their jobs better.
October 26th, 2020 at 8:33 AM ^
The length of 21 days is because our conference is taking the myocarditis risk seriously. Basically 14 days to get the virus out of the system, 7 days of physical testing verify that there are no lasting results.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:27 PM ^
The time frame is because they are worried about myocarditis. They want to make sure the players are carefully monitored. It's not to prevent the spread. It seems to me that was the compromise made between the schools that disagreed on whether to play this fall.
October 26th, 2020 at 12:48 AM ^
They can still monitor after 14 days, since if there is signs of Myocarditis then the player will need to be out for 3 months, essentially out of the season. The risk of Myocarditis is much lower with COVID than first thought, in fact any cold or flu can result in Myocarditis.
October 25th, 2020 at 8:23 PM ^
An average person gets 14 days isolation on d/c from me at the hospital but said person isn't having 200-300 lb bodies hitting them on a daily basis. We don't know what cardiac effects the virus may have that go un-noticed in clinically stable patients. Better safe than sorry.
October 26th, 2020 at 7:54 AM ^
Yeah this is overkill. Patients with mild-moderate symptoms are considered contagious for 10 days. The 20 day isolation rule applies to patients with severe infection.
October 26th, 2020 at 10:20 AM ^
The extra 7 days is for testing the player's health for return to play ... must take a battery of heart and lung tests over that extra time period. If those tests go OK, then the player can return to practice. But if those tests are not OK, then the player could be out more than 21 days.
October 26th, 2020 at 9:23 AM ^
So the Wisconsin quarterback misses the Michigan game by one day, duh.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:15 PM ^
Man that's a massive window. Nearly half the season. if you're doing a ton of testing, why do you need 21 days out?
October 25th, 2020 at 6:19 PM ^
It should serve as a strong deterrent and make more players follow protocols
October 25th, 2020 at 6:40 PM ^
This^
October 25th, 2020 at 8:46 PM ^
Yeah, stop eating ass during the season!!!
October 26th, 2020 at 11:44 AM ^
East G J....
Logged in to LOL.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:19 PM ^
The 21 days was not about the spread of the virus, but about the long-term health of the player due to the infection. The Big Ten wanted to mandate a long enough window to be sure to rule out any heart complications, etc.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:20 PM ^
Why are we freaking out now about rules that were put in place before the season started?
October 25th, 2020 at 6:27 PM ^
It was a stupid rule when the season started.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:59 PM ^
It was the smart move. Heart issues are nothing to wave away.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:05 PM ^
Eventually we are likely to be heartbroken by a positive covid test.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:09 PM ^
Every team will have one of their top players miss a game due to Covid except for OSU.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:13 PM ^
Ugh... It's true, though. That fucking team is the guy that falls in the pile of shit and comes up with a diamond. And they won't acknowledge the luck, nor report it to the authorities.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:47 PM ^
My belief is that Ryan Day got an advanced ration of the Russian Vaccine.
October 25th, 2020 at 8:40 PM ^
Da Comrade
October 25th, 2020 at 8:27 PM ^
On the other hand, if Fields or someone else as important as him from OSU does get it, the 21 day rule will be changed immediately.
October 25th, 2020 at 8:46 PM ^
We've already been hit by COVID because Nico and Ambry opted out. If other teams lose on average two stars due to COVID tests when they play us, that's just things evening out.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:08 PM ^
Who's the third stringer? Coan is injured right?
October 25th, 2020 at 6:08 PM ^
This season is silly. Wishing him the best.
October 26th, 2020 at 2:30 PM ^
Yeah. Hope he lights it up . . . in December.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:10 PM ^
I hope and anticipate he will be healthy and okay, regardless. Interestingly, 21 days from today is the Sunday after we play Wisconsin. Could the football gods be showing us mercy for the first time in over two decades? Almost certainly not.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:13 PM ^
I don’t want it like that. I just want a call or two to go our way. Not a person to get sick, even if it’s mild.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:22 PM ^
Agreed - I respect this take smitty
October 25th, 2020 at 7:36 PM ^
Testing positive doesn't necessarily mean you're sick. Given that he played Friday, I'm guessing he doesn't feel too ill.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:14 PM ^
It's no guarantee that we'll still be playing games 21 days from now given these infection and death numbers.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:24 PM ^
Excellent point. I could live with a 2-0 season with two trophy wins. Heck, we could make a ridiculous claim for a national championship ala UCF!
October 25th, 2020 at 6:27 PM ^
While we're daydreaming.
What happens if a team has 2 no contests but goes undefeated and another team is 8-1.
Is 8-1 > 7-0? What if there's no head-to-head matchup?
October 25th, 2020 at 6:45 PM ^
We already have different conferences who will end the season with different numbers of games played.
The answer is to get "style points" for blowouts. Its one reason I wish we had kept our foot on the gas last night and hung 24 more points on them.
Its a short season and if you want to move up, you have to blow teams out.
October 25th, 2020 at 9:23 PM ^
It's simple. We win all of our game we are in the playoff. We lose a game we are not in the playoff.
October 26th, 2020 at 7:43 AM ^
They are going to determine by winning percentage. 7-0 wins
October 26th, 2020 at 11:14 AM ^
Kind of like this? 1918 season, Spanish Flu shortened. Michigan won the Big Ten and a National Championship:
October 25th, 2020 at 9:25 PM ^
We have some data here. Most other conferences have been playing for at least a month. And while there have been some positive tests and some games cancelled/postponed, the season marched on. The BIG will do the same.
October 25th, 2020 at 6:15 PM ^
LOL!! You think we'll get off that easy? Dude, I'm strapping on the iron cup right now...
October 25th, 2020 at 6:32 PM ^
Good idea. I have a feeling we will make the mistake of kicking Ironballs McGinty in the groin.
