OT: Name a good band where all the members are under 40
By “good,” I mean you would pay to see them live.
How many are left? I like Florence + the Machine, but I have no idea how old the members aside from Florence Welch (33) are.
I remember when Jeff Ament (57) of Pearl Jam turned 40 and my first thought was “Geez, maybe they have to break up now!” But now I’m hard-pressed to find younger bands that are worth the price of admission!
Any “newer” bands I should be a fan of, or is rock really on death’s door?
Really big fan of Vampire Weekend. Saw them live last year and they were a blast
Definitely agree - they've stayed relevant and interesting across multiple albums without sounding like they rehashed same work. Shows were fantastic, too.
Just got my refund after the concert was cancelled for this year. So disappointed.
Vampire Weekend is and has been my favorite band to listen to since seeing them at lollapalooza in 09’ or 10’. Seen them live 3x, all were excellent shows and was super bummed in receiving my refund for their cancelled show this fall.
They have a pretty unique sound and do not mind mixing in all sorts of different instruments. I could listen to any of their albums start to finish and be happy.
Vampire Weekend is great. Still listen to their first album all the time.
Can't believe Arctic Monkeys haven't been mentioned on this thread yet though. Their last album was a bit meh as they tried a new direction, but their other albums rule
I know a few, but you've probably never heard of them.
I gave you an upvote for the humor that my conscious mind understood but my subconscious still reflexively rolled my eyes through the back of my head in response to that statement
Well, the first band that that came to mind were the Strokes, even if they're not playing anymore - but Julian Fernando Casablancas is 41 - so I just missed the cut.
Or Vulfpeck. They don't have a huge body of work like the other bands listed, but they're definitely fun and talented.
And Jack Stratton from Vulfpeck is a U of M guy (and an awesome dude).
Most of the members of Vulfpeck are from UM. Antwaun Stanley - also an awesome guy and all around great dude - was a friend of a couple good friends of mine from the School of Ed, so I have a few memories of hanging out with him around campus. I got to see Vulfpeck (or what went on to become Vulfpeck) play a packed little house concert at the Canterbury House on Huron in winter 2010. They would go on to play the Big House graduation ceremony that May where Obama was the keynote speaker. They played before the ceremony started and before Obama landed at Crisler, but still.... they can say the opened for President Obama!
Even Volbeat band members are all over 40 now. I thought it was just a few years ago they made it big. May be they spent too many years in Denmark?
Greta Van Fleet
Some complain about how much they can sound like Led Zeppelin, but I love it. All are in their early 20s and will continue to get better
These guys are damn good. Great music.
Led Zep is the greatest rock band ever - but at this stage, I don't see them producing any new music.
Love what Greta Van Fleet is doing - great music. And yes, they will get even better.
This is one of the groups that popped into my head when I read the title as well. I think if they up their stage presence, they are a stadium tourer in the future.
Gave them a listen, and whoa. They look so young, and yet their style is so throwback, my brain got confused. First impression was they're pretty darn good at what they do, though.
They may be fantastic (haven't really listened to them, just not the type of music I enjoy) but the only thing that comes to mind when they're mentioned anymore is the brutal pitchfork review of their 2018 album, lol. (https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/greta-van-fleet-anthem-of-the-peaceful-army/ if you're curious)
I haven't listened to them yet, but that review is SCATHING and hilariously cynical. I'll probably give them a listen, because I do like Led Zep and others of that genre and to see if I come to the same conclusion as the review. But thanks for the review link because that was entertaining.
That review reads like the reviewer's girlfriend slept with one of the band members. So angry.
welcome to pitchfork amirite
It bothered me at first, then I really dug it, now I'm just meh on them.
I love Led Zeppelin so I gave them a listen. They just sound like Led Zeppelin. I heard nothing new.
Who says something has to be new to be good? I'm a massive Zeppelin fan myself and I'd say GVF is the best new real rock n roll band since the classic rock era. Not to mention the "sounds like Led Zeppelin" moniker is overused, they clearly take inspiration from various other bands as well.
You say it like it's a bad thing.
That’s who I thought of. Also avenged sevenfold. Singer is 38
The Shrine
The Struts
Dirty Honey
A Flint, Mi trio called Steppes. They’re really good and all younger than 40(I’m sure they’re in their 20’s or early 30’s, the very least).
Edit: they are on YouTube https://youtu.be/quTkosZEc_U
Panic at the disco
Greta van Fleet.
Not a band but morgan wallen
tame impala
I co-sign this. I saw them/him (Kevin Parker) at Mo-Pop last year, they are worth the price of admission and I'm not really a big concert goer.
Sorry to be the contrarian (it's only my opinion, after all), but I saw them/him on SNL a few years ago, and it was up there with the worst musical experience of my life. Whatever that music was, was certainly not for me. To each, his own
It's not rock but my answer to this is by far Billy Strings
Dude is flat out one of the best guitar players out there and his shows have a ton of energy
Plus he's from Michigan!

He (with his band) was on Jimmy Kimmel the other night - first time on late night TV.

Sorry, not sure how to make that an actual link
Poopy Pants
Princess Jasmine
Turd Ferguson
Oh wait, those are the nicknames of a few friends. Never mind.
Pop Evil
Great Van Fleet
I saw The Rolling Stones in 1989 when Mick Jagger was 46. They called the “steel Wheels” tour the “Steel Wheelchairs” tour. Now it’s not so unusual. Of course I wonder if kids listen to all of the old rockers or if it is just us old guys and nothing has actually changed.
I saw them at the Silverdome for the Bridges to Babylon tour in ‘97. They were all mid-50s, and my friends and I (high school juniors) thought it was insane that a band could still tour at that age.
Here we are 23 years later, and the Stones are still making music, and you can be damn sure they’ll have a sold-out stadium tour as soon as the environment allows.
I got see both the Rolling Stones and the Who that year at the Silverdome for one last time. I almost got to go see Zep at the silverdome but my uncle gave the extra ticket to his friend rather than me. I was only 13 when they played there. But my Uncle said it was a great concert. He said Page was playing great, since he did not load up on too much acid.
I like Mumford & Sons - especially their first two albums - and they meet the age requirement.
Forgot about them. I’d definitely pay to see them!
I liked their third album as well. I wasn’t impressed at all with the singles from their fourth release.
Head and the Heart
The Lumineers
Kaleo
Saw the Lumineers open for U2 in Chicago a few years ago. They 100% stole the show from Bono and company. Definitely worth seeing them live.
Yeah the Lumineers put on a really, really good live show.
Ten years ago I would have put Modest Mouse in there too. Saw them a year or two ago at the Filmore, they were good but definitely losing the edge.
Two that I enjoy are "Gang of Youths" and "Mumford and Sons"
Cage The Elephant (think they are all late 30s)
Ditto! Their music has only gotten better since "Ain't no Rest for the Wicked".
Big fan of Needtobreathe! Have seen them live a few times, pretty unparalleled vocals and very talented.
