Make A Guess: 2020 Starting OL
We lost Runyan, Bredeson, Ruiz and Onwenu.
Mayfield returns, Hayes got multiple starts at LT last year, Stueber is back. Filiaga feels like he's been in the Spanellis role, but could be ready to take over one of the guard spots. Honigford has been in the mix. Then there's a wave of young guys and a walk-on in Vastardis who've all seen some spot duty.
What's your 2-deep depth chart at OL prediction?
My prediction is pain
Probably a significantly worse O-line vs last year’s experienced players.
Feels like Hayes (LT), Mayfield (RT), and Steuber (RG) are locks. I like that there are about five guys fighting for the other two spots. I think one goes to a young guy for sure. I wouldn't be surprised to see Vastardis start the year at center to get the line calls right.

Every single one a redshirt! After what we’ve been through it’s downright erotic
Erotic would not be my word choice but I agree with the sentiment that it is "exciting" to see so much experience/seasoning and guys that you don't cringe when you hear their names.
Obviously you're not excited enough! Get pumped!
One, swedish made enlargement pump... THAT'S NOT MINE!
what about orgasmic?
THAT'S gonna have to wait for beating osu! ?♂️
You little tease...
And all the backups are RS too!!!!’
Dont be surprised if Barnhart sneaks his way into a starting role.
I think this line ends the season playing as well as last year’s line. The roster is the deepest most talented OL group in quite a long time.
Ruiz darn darn darn.
I'm AROUSED.
All redshirts with a great OL coach. Mmmmmmm. We've been waiting for this for like 10 years now.
This looks pretty reasonable except for Rumler as the backup center. I don't think he will get enough snaps there in practice to be ready.
starters: backup:
RT Mayfield RT Keegan
RG Stueber RG Rumler
C Carpenter C Vastardis
LG Filiaga LG Honigford
LT Hayes LT T.Jones
Left Guard is going to be a battle. Rumler, Filiaga, and Honigford all have a good shot at starting. Whoever wins should be pretty good. It's so refreshing to know that after losing 4 of 5 starters we can reload like this on the offensive line.
Barnhart was ahead of the other freshmen last season. I'd be surprised if he's not on the two deep this fall.
Barnhart can play guard or tackle. The dude can dunk with style. I think he is a serious athlete.
I was blown away with his senior highlights. Dude continuously had dudes on roller skates and played till the absolute end of each play. Not to mention like 5 receiving touchdowns at H-back and like 5+ sacks, a pick 6, and numerous TFL and FF at DE. Some of those plays were amazing, literally dragging would-be tacklers 20+ yards at times. Definitely a man among boys.
No Barnhart in your two deep?
Things that make you say "hmmmm"...
L->R: Hayes, Barnhart, Carpenter, Stueber, Mayfield.
L->R2: Keegan, Filiaga, Atteberry, Rumler, Trente Jones
I think Rumler comes in if Carpenter is injured tho. Not expecting any 2020 lineman to make an impact.
I would be astounded if Atteberry were the #2 center. A kid who played left tackle in high school, with no spring ball, learning a new position AND all the protection calls?
Agree Atterberry will RS this year and have a shot at the two deep next year
I agree, also I would be surprised if TJ didn't see snaps each game, his ceiling is "the roof"
Cheers
"I think rumler comes in if carpenter gets injured". I just think atteberry will get some rutgers reps.
With four games to play with, anything can happen. I'm still not playing him at center, though. True freshmen don't play center. Even Cesar Ruiz - the #1 center in the country, a future 1st round pick, and a center throughout his whole high school career - didn't play any center as a true freshman.
Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp & Joe Besser.
Hayes - Filiaga - Carpenter - COIVD19 - Aww fudge we're all gonna die eff everything
Backups: Trying again in 2021
I’d say 4 of the best 5 are: Mayfield, Stueber, Filiaga, and Hayes. Is Rumler still a center/Guard or exclusively a Guard now? Depending on the answer to that question the 5th spot is between him, Carpenter, and maybe Barnhardt. I like Vastardis is for depth but I’d like to see the talent on the field.
Edit: see below vastardis autocorrected to bastard which is pretty funny actually.
Auto-correct is funny sometimes. lol
I like Isabastard over Carpenter at center. Hayes at LT, Mayfield at RT. Barnhart at left guard, and Stueber at right guard.
"That right over there is ThePonyConquerer. THE dumbest Mgouser you'll see."
"Dumbest? I'm sure that you're-"
"He once posted on the broad asking for advice for some Sparty chick or whatevs."
Barnhart will be starting somewhere on the line.
Right Wing?
Left to right: Hayes - Chuck - Carpenter - Stueber - Mayfield
2: Jones - Honigford - Vastardis - Ruemler - Barnhardt
I'd like to hear some hype out of fall camp for Jones after the recruiting promise.
Also, it's really, really nice to feel good about line depth.
LT - Hayes
LG - FIlliaga
C - Barnhart
RG - Stueber
RT - Mayfield
Next five: Jones, Vastardis, Carpenter, Rumler, Honingford
Barnhart doesn't play C.
Carpenter does and Rumler has seen time there.
Barnhart has seen time at LT and LG.
My prediction is we'll be really good in a year or two.
My prediction is we'll be really good in a year or two.
Five very large, talented, and mean young men!!!
GO BLUE ??
We hear it about other programs, they don't rebuild, they reload: guys who haven't started or even seen the field just step in and take over like no big deal. This is going to have to be an example of that. There are certainly enough bodies, with enough potential, to think that it's feasible.
In addition to Ruiz leaving for the NFL, it's really a bummer that Spanellis left. That one is still kind of a head-scratcher, IMO.
I'll go with Hayes-Rumler-Carpenter-Stueber-Mayfield although it wouldn't surprise me if Vastardis grabbed one of the starting spots.
A very impressive, talented group of young men competing for playing time here.
LT: 1. Hayes 2. Keegan
LG: 1. Rumler 2. Filiaga
C: 1. Carpenter 2. Vastardis
RG: 1: Barnhart 2. Stueber
RT: 1. Mayfield 2. Jones
Forge that set of talented young men into a powerful group...right from the beginning of the season and don't look back.
I was excited about Nolan Rumler when he signed with Michigan. I wonder how he's coming along.
I'm feeling really optimistic about this group. Hayes and Mayfield have got the starting tackle spots lockdown. Two potential first-round draft picks. The guards right now will be filiaga and stueber. However I do think karsen barnhart and Noah rumler will play a lot early! Zach Carpenter will be solid at center. This team will find at least 8 offensive lineman to rotate. The tackles will be better than they were last year. The guards will be as good or better athletically. it will be hard to replace Caesar Ruiz but I do think the interior of the offensive line will be bigger longer and more athletic overall. By game 4 or 5 they will be knocking people off the ball! I love our offensive line and I love our running backs. I like Dylan McCaffrey running ability... And I like Joe Milton's potential. Outside of Nico Collins the skill on the perimeter remains to be seen.. I do think we have some speed and talent there. The offense will take a step forward led by a great offensive line!!!
I think Hayes Mayfield Filiaga and Stueber are the top 4. There was rumors of a Filiaga transfer that vanished in Dec/Jan, reading the tea leaves suggests he solidified his spot as a starter for next year. The center spot is probably a 4 way battle between Rumler, Barnhart, Carpenter, and Vastardis. Barnhart is probably the best pure OL, but his long term potential is better used not at center so do they go with one of the others?
I'll take a stab at it...
FYI on Barnhart...he played in multiple games last year at LT. Also, this is by unit...truthfully guys would slide around so even though it looks like a guy may be in the 2nd or 3rd unit, truly he may not be that high up. For example, Stueber would slide to RT and Rumler or Hogniford would play RG before Keegan or Jones ever played meaningful snaps at RT next season.
1st Unit
LT: Hayes
LG: Filiaga
C: Carpenter
RG: Stueber
RT: Mayfield
2nd Unit
LT: Barnhart
LG: Rumler
C: Vastardis
RG: Hogniford
RT: Keegan
3rd Unit:
LT: Persi
LG: Stewart
C: Atteberry
RG: Zinter
RT: Jones
If you want to go by position...
LT: Hayes, Mayfield, Barnhart, Stueber, Keegan, Jones, Persi
LG: Filiaga, Rumler/Hogniford, Carpenter, Stewart, Zinter
C: Carpenter, Vastardis, Rumler, Atteberry
RG: Stueber, Filiaga, Hogniford/Rumler, Carpenter, Stewart, Zinter
RT: Mayfield, Stueber, Hayes, Barnhart, Keegan, Jones, Stewart, Persi
By the time the season rolls around...I see 9 guys who legitimately could play at a starters level.
- Mayfield (RT, LT)
- Hayes (LT, RT)
- Stueber (RG, RT, LT)
- Carpenter (C, RG, LG)
- Filiaga (LG, RG)
- Barnhart (LT, RT, LG)
- Vastardis (C)
- Rumler (LG, RG, C)
- Hogniford (RG, RT, LG)
