Inglourious Basterds, obviously.
Just watched that (again) 2 nights ago...what a great movie
Yes, great one! Just not kid friendly.
Yes, I imagine the "kid friendly" war movies genre is rather small...
I'd recommend Sgt. Stubby from a couple of years ago as a kid friendly option.
1917 was relatively kid friendly.
"Woody vs Bo: The Ten Year War" is clearly tops in this list ... and kid friendly
Bonjorno...
Mar-ga-re-ti

Yes, this! Second place for me Enemy at the Gates
Christoph Waltz won best supporting actor in that. He should have won best actor, period. He was so good in that movie. The scene between him and the french girl in the restaurant is a master class as far as I'm concerned. And I frequently have to pull up the scene in the theater lobby (BON-JOUR-NO) every now and then just for a laugh.
Didi mao!
So I visited Vietnam about 8 years ago and spent a month there. An absolute gem of the place to visit. The people, the food and the culture were all so interesting and good. Needless to say, its worth a visit if you have the time.
At any rate, the people there were so friendly and easy to hang out with. So I was staying at this mid-level quality hotel in Hanoi. The hotel itself wasn't bad, but was tucked away down an alley that would scare most Americans. It was owned by this family that was so welcoming and nice. So, I was heading out for some food with some friends, and the family that owned the hotel offered to host us for their family dinner. I said "thanks, but I have plans". They insisted pretty hard and I deflected "hey, I appreciate the invite, and I'd love to join you, etc.". So one of the sons said, "if I can make you laugh, then you must join us for dinner". I said, "challenge accepted".
He sat me down and told me to take a shot of this horrible Vietnamese liquor (think Raki, but worse). I thought no way would I laugh taking this shot, its disgusting. So as I take the shot, he puts fake gun to my head and yells "Didi Mao!", and I spit out the shot and laugh my ass off! Well done!
I kept my word and stayed for dinner, and it was one of the best meals I had in Vietnam.
The Thin Red Line.
Band of Brothers for the hundredth time. It’s not a movie, but it’s 10+ hrs of brilliance.
It's awesome...The Pacific is equally as awesome. I have the bluray set but just bought it on VUDU for 10 bucks so worth it.
My thoughts exactly, on Band of Brothers. I thought the Pacific was very, very good, but not on the same level as Band of Brothers.
Could not agree more. The Pacific was good, maybe my expectations were too high, but Band of Brothers was amazing.
The Pacific was awful for the first five episodes and very good the last five. Very uneven series.
im with you, no doubt. best ive seen. pacific excellent too.
those guys kicked around the idea of another 10 episode special on 8th air force though i think hbo declined so not sure if its in production. love to see that.
if were talking straight movies, patton is one of the best. maybe black hawk down for something more recent with the action effects

I too was really interested in that series. Latest update I could find from last October has it coming to Apple TV. No projected date, just says it was greenlit, 8+ hrs and well over $200m budget. I would guess late 2021 at the absolute earliest.
Funny thing to remember with Band of Brothers. A lot of today's high profile actors made appearances in Band of Brothers. Not necessarily in huge roles, but I'm sure the exposure helped them tremendously in leapfrogging to other things.
James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Colin Hanks, Tom Hardy, Stephen Graham, and Simon Pegg, just to name a few.
Jimmy Fallon made a quick appearance too. Right before they go into Bastogne.
Did you know that Spielberg and Hanks are making the third volume right now? It's been under development for 8 years and HBO got outbid for it by Apple because HBO didn't want to foot the $200-250 million budget for 8 episodes. It's tentatively called The Masters of the Air and covers The Mighty Eighth bombers. I think it releases in late 2021 or 2022.
We Were Soldiers.
shared a mess hall with the 7th Cav, Garry Owen back in 94-96. My unit, the 9th Cav, Headhunters were also air cav in Vietnam. you may recognize them from Apocalypse Now.
Cool story bro and thanks for your service!
I was scrolling through for reminder before I chose. My search has ended. We Were Soldiers was a fantastic movie!
Very short "cool story, bro"
My buddy was in Michigan ROTC. After graduation, he was stationed at Ft. Benning in Columbus, GA. He had the fortune of being an extra in "We Were Soldiers" (or at least appeared very briefly in a couple of scenes) and also got to meet the cast. He has a picture with his favorite actress at the time, Keri Russell who was, of course, hot stuff after her star turn in Felicity.
Great movie.
One of my Air Force buddies landed in a similar situation with Transformers. The closest I got was a pic with Jeremy Renner when he came to Afghanistan when Hurt Locker opened. He was a nice dude.
Does a Band of Brothers binge count? Its not a movie but its up there as being one of the greatest miniseries ever made. If not the greatest.
It’s tied for me, with Chernobyl.
All Quiet on the Western Front - either version. Favorite book and favorite war movie of all time.
I really liked 1917 as well.
All Quiet another great one...the original was best imo.
Yeah, this was my immediate thought, too. My second thought was Paths of Glory.
Battle of the Bulge
The Great Escape w/ Steve McQueen.
The Pianist. Perhaps it doesn’t qualify as the protagonist is not a soldier, but WWII engulfs the story. It’s beautifully shot and never fails to make me feel something. One I watch annually.
This is a very underrated movie...
Whether it’s fair, I think it gets judged for who directed it as much as the quality of the actual film.
Kelly's Heroes
"Stop it with the negative vibes!"
* "Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?"
Moriarty.
"Very good, Fisher. You win a cookie."
The only thing that bothered me about that movie (which I love) is the ending: What next? They've got millions of dollars in gold - but what do they do with it? It's not like they can send it home, or open a bank account.
I know, I know - this is no place for logic.
Well, it's just a short trip to Switzerland, right?
Don’t tell me you guys missed the sequel?
Stalag 17.
Need a laugh about now.
Platoon.
