Probably game plan as the taller team.

I also think it was a product of playing Nebraska. They're very small for a B1G team (if you watched the game Dan Dakich talked about this ~29 times). Teske was in the paint A LOT to draw mismatches and/or double teams that opened up perimeter shooters. There really wasn't a need for pick and pop action with him.
January 29th, 2020 at 2:00 PM ^
Seemed like Teske was getting legit triple teamed when he got the rock in the paint. It led to some good perimeter ball movement and open looks.

The fact that Teske can hit 3-pt shots at a decent rate expands spacing on the floor. I sure hope he doesn't stop shooting them. Last night however, he had a decided size advantage in the lane so he stuck around the paint more.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:10 PM ^
Except he doesn't hit them a decent rate. His make rate for them is 26% this year.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:20 PM ^
Sadly, for this team 26% is a decent rate.

He's our Steph Curry

Big Splash
January 29th, 2020 at 2:47 PM ^
his shot has very little arc. as such, he will never shoot at a good clip. the margin from error is just that much smaller. compare the arc on his shot vs moe wagner. nite and day.
January 29th, 2020 at 3:05 PM ^
For a 7'1" center, 26% is good enough to make other teams respect his shooting and scheme for it
January 29th, 2020 at 3:28 PM ^
False 7'1" and shooting 26% is bad enough to have other teams pray he shoots them.
Even to consider paying him to shoot them.
January 29th, 2020 at 6:58 PM ^
No it's not. They should not even guard him at that rate.
January 29th, 2020 at 4:56 PM ^
He hits them at a sufficient rate so that people run out to contest the shot and bigs are drawn out of the lane. Yes, 35% would be better but people contest his 3s more that Z's.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:30 PM ^
I think 2-3 attempts isn't bad as long as they're A) wide open and B) at the top of the key. It's when he's up to 5-6 attempts (and shooting from the wing) that it becomes an issue, unless he's on a ridiculous hot streak. To me his footwork and form are just too sloppy for him to ever be anything more than a middling three-pointer shooter. His feet are often not set and he regularly falls back on his attempts, leading to shots that barely graze the rim or miss altogether. Even if those things were cleaned up he still has a tendency to aim/heave the ball at the rim which leads to a really flat shot.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:53 PM ^
The falling back aspect is really strange too, if there is any chance of the shot being blocked he should absolutely not be taking it.
January 29th, 2020 at 4:17 PM ^
He hits 26% on almost exclusively wide open catch and shoot 3’s. That’s horrendous efficiency for that kind of shot. They rarely guard him out there, so what’s the point of shooting them?
January 29th, 2020 at 4:59 PM ^
Regardless of %s, I think teams are usually guarding him out there. And unfortunately, I think most of his shots are at least somewhat contested.
January 29th, 2020 at 5:09 PM ^
I would rewatch the Illinois game if I were you
January 29th, 2020 at 5:37 PM ^
He is shooting 26.5 % from 3. He should not be shooting them at the rate he does.
January 29th, 2020 at 12:59 PM ^
They had such a size advantage and abandoned the two center lineups so I wouldn't read that much into it. He didn't have a shot blocker on him to draw out of the paint.
Ditching the two center thing was notable. May have been opponent specific but they had a short bench so I'm hoping that lineup has been axed. Bad for them all year.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:01 PM ^
They should also tell him to dunk.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:04 PM ^
Curious if there is a way to track our PPP on trips where he takes a 3 vs doesn't? I'm guessing analytics are very anti him shooting 3s.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:13 PM ^
Agree. His make rate is currently 26% which would make the PPP for those possessions 0.78. Actually, probably a little higher given an occasional ORB from a miss.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:50 PM ^
The better and tougher thing to quantify is how him shooting threes impacts the offense as a whole.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:07 PM ^
He's shut down his 2 point game too.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:10 PM ^
I was kinda surprised we didn't see more Austin Davis last night, it seems his "bully-ball" would have been very effective against a smaller Nebraska team. Castleton was actually first off the bench for Teske which hasn't been the case over the last month or so. I know he's not immensely talented, but I love his motor and it seems like always gets a few easy layups in his limited time mostly due to hustle and strength.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:30 PM ^
I fully expected him to get a foul on the basket he did score because he disposed of a smaller opponent grabbing an offensive board.
January 29th, 2020 at 1:34 PM ^
I say Teske should quit taking 3 pointers, except for the ones he's going to make. And make more.
That's a reasonable ask, right?
January 29th, 2020 at 2:13 PM ^
Sort of like how the football coaches kept calling the "fumble at a terrible time" play, the basketball coaches need to stop calling the "miss a wide open three" play!
January 29th, 2020 at 4:40 PM ^
Yeah, if only our 3rd base coach gave the HR sign more often...
January 29th, 2020 at 2:16 PM ^
Teske needs to come to NYMSG ready for a street brawl. Rutgers brand of basketball is physical.
January 29th, 2020 at 2:24 PM ^
There's absolutely no way he was told to "shut that part of his game down." Is it possible they had a different game plan last night and tried to work it inside? Sure. But Jon Teske is shooting 27% from 3, which isn't great, but his ability to spread the floor a bit keeps defenders on their heels, improves spacing, and also makes him a better inside player
January 29th, 2020 at 2:51 PM ^
And the bow and arrow thing he does after a rare make is lame.
January 29th, 2020 at 3:22 PM ^
He gave his 3-point tickets to Nunez who was more than happy to brick enough of them for both players. Then there's Franz...
January 29th, 2020 at 4:17 PM ^
Had 3 assists. Was leading the team for awhile until a guard finally beat him by 1.
