Semi-OT Bye Week Follies: Have you attended a Michigan game while injured?
If you listen to 1050 you've probably heard that Sam Webb had wisdom teeth out yesterday but is planning to be back on-air tomorrow. I'm a bit skeptical.
In 1981, I had all four wisdom teeth removed at the same time at the UM Dental School, and just a day or two later I was sitting in the stands down in West Lafayette watching Michigan beat the Boilermakers 28-10. My face was still comically blown up like a chipmunk mouth stuffed with golfballs and I couldn't eat anything solid, but I didn't care because I was floating about six inches off the ground courtesy of the pain meds I was taking. TBH I don't remember many details of the game, other than I was sitting in the sun on a nice mid-November afternoon watching a relatively easy Michigan victory. I wasn't in shape to do anything requiring mental concentration.
I'm sure many of you have stories of bravely attending Michigan games while dealing with broken limbs, cracked teeth, missing kidneys, or horrendous hangovers. Let's hear 'em.

Medicine has changed a lot since 1981. I'm sure the only sedative they gave you was a bottle of Jack Daniels, and the doctor probably used a pair of rusty pliers to pull them out.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:27 PM ^
My dentist couldn't afford Jack Daniels. Too much college debt...
November 5th, 2019 at 2:33 PM ^
I'll double-check, but I'm pretty sure the game I attended was in 1981, not 1881.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:36 PM ^
We were 0-3 that year. I think you'd remember.

Yeah, that was my first semester at Michigan! Us students were all exited since we were #1 in both the AP and UPI polls and everyone thought Bo was going to go,undefeated and finally win a NC! However, Wisconsin happened!

First semester in 1881? Welcome aboard, Methuselah.
November 5th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
I was only ten months old but I thought it was just 0-1, not 0-3

Worst thing about dental surgery is not being able to bite down and grit your teeth through the pain.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:23 PM ^
I was at the game against Army this year..... I was fine when I got there..... I felt increasingly more ill as the game when on and left slightly relieved, yet nauseous.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:23 PM ^
I attended the Washington game on August 31, 2002. It was a noon game and it was hotter than Hades.
I left the next day for neck and spine surgery at Mayo Clinic. I was miserable and had to leave my seat on a regular basis to get out of the blazing sun and into the shade.
We won 31-29.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:43 PM ^
I was there, too, with my dad. Brabbs for the win!
November 5th, 2019 at 3:04 PM ^
I had no idea illegal participation was a 15-yard penalty then
November 5th, 2019 at 2:26 PM ^
I will be attending the MSU and OSU games with a broken jaw and wired mouth. Go Blue!
November 5th, 2019 at 7:08 PM ^
You will fit in fine with the "Down in Front" crowd.
November 5th, 2019 at 8:10 PM ^
I am very familiar with that crowd, and I am one of the people who elicit that response. I will never join the mob. STAND UP, GET LOUD!

My worst experience was the infamous Illinois game in 1993 when we blew a late 2 touchdown lead capped off by Ricky Powers fumbling with about a minute to go which gave them the ball and time enough to score. But I never saw the ending.
That wasnt the worst of my day though. I had a bit of the lower intestine flue and with about 10 minutes to go in the game i had to go to the bathroom.....I mean REALLY go. And if you're old enough to remember the urinal walls in the old stadium your old enough to remember those toilet stalls were not for the faint of heart by the 4th quarter of any game.
So after round one in there I thought I could return to my seat and watch the end of our victory. About five minutes later round two hit me and this time I had to basically run to the bathroom and pray there was no line cause i had a very high sense of bathroom urgency. Fortunately I made it but I realized there was no way I could finish the game and there was definitely no way I wanted to go back into one of those stalls a third time. So I grabbed the guys I went with and said "we gotta go NOW' and we left with about 3 minutes to go in the game and Michigan up two scores and made a run (no pun intended) for the car. Next stop was a drug store for Amodium, Pepto Bismal and the hope I could get back to Cleveland without a major problem in the car.

I was in St Joe's for a Diverticulitis Opeartion on the Wednesday before the Colorado Game in 1994 and was at the Michigan State with my staples still in but I missed the Iowa Game but would never miss a game with the Idiots from EL. I was in pain but a few Vodkas cured that problem but win cured all. Go Blue. So sorry to miss the Colorado Game. Watched with pain in the hospital.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:36 PM ^
I had mono during the OSU game in 2012. Figured it was my best chance to catch a win. Glad I can say I've seen it happen.

It's been awhile.

I broke my foot Junior year at UM after a most competitive beer pong match, which my partner and I won! Being in a stupor, I walked to the Big House on said broken foot and made it till the end of the Notre Dame game before I had the ambulance take me to the ER because the pain and swelling in my foot was too much to bear. We also got our asses kicked by Notre Dame that year, so that did not help. Had a cast for two weeks, then a walking boot (air cast) for another two weeks.
TL;DR - Beer pong, drunk, broke foot, walked to game, Notre Dame kicked our ass, went to ER

I have attended every home game against Indiana since 1987 with an erection lasting longer than 4 hours. I thought I was cured when my doctor prescribed JOK in 2016 - alas, I'm still afflicted.
November 5th, 2019 at 4:01 PM ^
You must of taken too many viagra pills. Those commercials are funny, "If you experience a erection lasting more than 4 hours seek medical attention immediately".
November 5th, 2019 at 5:03 PM ^
Methinks if I had one lasting that long I should probably call every woman I know...
November 5th, 2019 at 2:45 PM ^
Broke my hand the other day...went to the Maryland game. Probably only 60% full, but of that, 80% were Michigan fans to start the game and 90% by the end. The upper decks were all Michigan and the later into the game it went, the more the Michigan fans invaded the lower bowl.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:53 PM ^
Missed most of my senior year's games after tearing my Achilles in August. Was still in a walking boot in early November for my first full tailgate and game at the Big House that year. Leg felt pretty terrible for a couple days after; also, we lost.
November 5th, 2019 at 2:57 PM ^
attending games a couple weeks after acl reconstruction back in 2001. kind of a bitch going down about 80 rows to my 5th row seat with crutches. don't think i could even do that now with the stupid handrail going up the middle of the isles.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:02 PM ^
No, but I have while in the Transfer Portal.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:13 PM ^
Yes. Every Michigan game I have attended I have done so with a crack in my butt.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:15 PM ^
Just this year. Ended up getting a concussion in September. I went to the Iowa game against the docs suggestion. Boy was that the worst. Went tailgating at the golf course beforehand and 100% felt drunk without having a thing to drink. At one point I had no idea where I was on the golf course, and luckily saw my wife who had come to find me. During the game, had to wear ear protection. Spent the next week with a killer headache.
At least I got to witness the most explosive/exciting game of all time...
10/10 would do again. Go Blue!
November 5th, 2019 at 3:25 PM ^
If hangovers count, then yes. Almost every game

Had mono just before senior year, and tried to do everything by the book so that I could enjoy my last welcome week (2011). Turns out, that wasn’t enough time and I felt miserable for both the western (shortened rain game) and notre dame (UTL v1) games- probably wouldn’t have even gone to the notre dame game if it was earlier in the day. Ended up being the only games I went to sober in college, and if that notre game game wasn’t my favorite one in college (granted the 08-12 path was pretty rough) then I don’t know what was.
If you think you’re over mono, you’re probably not
November 5th, 2019 at 3:32 PM ^
I was diagnosed with mono and walked to Crisler for a Duke game in the Ellerbe era...unless it was Amaker. We got pasted. I stood for the first half but sat for the second half.
Some people questioned if I had mono. If there's mild mono, I had it.
Update: Yeah, Amaker. It was 2001.

I remember riding home after the 1989 Wisconsin game (24-0 win) and getting stricken with montezuma's revenge. Must have been somthing in the pizza at the stadium. Luckily, we made it home just in time. I was in the bathroom for most of that Saturday evening.
November 5th, 2019 at 4:18 PM ^
Those pizza box tops made the best frisbees ever.

I went to the 2011 Spring Game just a couple days after getting diagnosed with pneumonia. Snowy weather and it rained at the end but I wanted to go get a glimpse of Hoke’s first team.
Also tried to go to the U-M Lacrosse Stadium opening game in February 2018 just a day after a big snowstorm. I had a 102 degree fever and was sweating through everything but girlfriend literally took my car keys and made me go to the Dr. My Dr then scolded me saying I could’ve died if I did that.

I had all four wisdom teeth out at the same time in 2008 and I ate dinner that night. Never took a single one of the painkillers they gave me and by the next day I was fine. Had to be careful about avoiding dry socket but otherwise was eating normally the day after.
November 5th, 2019 at 3:52 PM ^
Username checks out. How long did it take the new wisdom teeth to come in?
Cheers.

I went to a game a week after herniating the L4-L5 disk. I stood most of the game since sitting felt like I was getting stabbed in the back with a sharp knife. I had to drink a lot before the game to deaden the sciatica pain down my right leg!
November 5th, 2019 at 4:12 PM ^
Tore my ACL and MCL was on crutches for the 2006 season and I sit in Row 8 and never missed a game
November 5th, 2019 at 4:16 PM ^
I missed the 49-3 win over MSU ('02ish?) passed out drunk in my brother's car after hitting the booze hard on the golf course.

Was at the 2010 game vs. u of I (the no defense game). Hit the over in the first half, but we drove up the night before and got completely housed at an Ann Arbor bar somehow ended up in Yspsilanti at some strip club that was located behind what was like a smoke shop. I was kind of three sheets to the wind at this point, and my friend gets kicked out of this establishment. It was pretty early in the AM at this point, and we literally hitchhiked back to our hotel, I paid some random Yspsilanti citizen 20.00 to take us back to our hotel. This was a noon game and when we got back to the hotel one of our college buddies was randomly at the same hotel going to the game in the morning visiting his little sister who went there. We end up in his hotel room partying until we went to the golf course to tailgate never going to bed. Used the game to sober up and drove back home to Chicago after. I don't know that I was hungover but I was not myself at that game, But it was painful to watch that Rich Rod D.

I attended the first two games this year in an arm cast. It was hot and uncomfortable. And so was my arm.

I went to a hockey game after spending all day on my dorm futon with the worst flu I'd ever had in my life. It was too big of a game and I couldn't think of skipping it. Trudged down to Yost with the chills and stood up all game feeling like death. Of course it went to OT.
Trudged back home to get some sleep because I was supposed to go on a field trip for a class the next morning. By this point I was so feverish that I spent all night in and out of sleep having hallucinations. Going to that game was a bad, bad idea. I was in such bad shape my mom had to come pick me up so I could spend the rest of the weekend on the floor in the fetal position.
November 5th, 2019 at 6:56 PM ^
Fell through a suspended ceiling 8 ft to the floor. Luckily a study classroom bookshelf helped break my fall. Ended up on my knees head bleeding just a few days ago. My cousin bought tickets to the Maryland game early in the season so I drove from Maine to DC. First time in my life I took the handicap elevator and limped up the nose bleed section stairs. Boy that hurt. Good game tho!
November 5th, 2019 at 8:17 PM ^
Yep, broke my hand the night before the 2003 Michigan - OSU game! Still went and had the time of my life! My brother and I ran down on the field after Michigan’s glorious win in that game!

Absolutely.
