Negotiations have begun with Juwan Howard
Sources: Michigan has offered its head coaching position to Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard. The two sides have begun negotiations. Deal remains far from done.

the problem with this tweet is that it doesn't explain whether the deal is far from done because there are significant obstacles, or because these things aren't put together in 30 minutes. the former is a problem; the latter meaningless.
I would guess that it's the latter. Given the enthusiastic tweet by Howard's wife, seems like something that has them confident it'll get done, probably have an agreed to salary, but still working out things like the buyout and other terms.
Michigan doesn’t publicly offer jobs to people if they aren’t certain they’ll accept.
Yeah, my guess is the latter because neither party wants this to go south. Warde because he wants a coach and Howard because it would look pretty bad if he messed up an opportunity to coach at a major college program where he has deep connections.
This feels like one of those tweets where a guy puts in scare words to get more attention. The only relevant information is the first sentence.
Almost certainly the latter. The days of the handshake agreements with coaching hires is long over. There are many terms to reach agreement on - salary being the biggest - but many other important ones as well. Michigan is likely to have all kinds of incentive clauses for certain achievements like making the NCAA tournament, graduation rates, etc., as an example. Then there's the requirments, pay, etc. for assistant coaches. The list goes on. It doesn't get done in a few hours.

Why does this coaching search feel way more drawn out than the Jim Harbaugh one (which lasted months)
"Time keeps on spinning, spinning, spinning.......just like the M Cube." -Steve Miller Band, probably
ehr.....its "Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'"
signed,
-That Guy
Recency effect.
Brady Hoke was fired on December 2, 2014. Jim Harbaugh was hired 27 days later. On that timetable, we wouldn't hire Juwan until well into June.
Perhaps because of recency bias.
Because you're irrational.
Firstly because your expectations seem a bit high. But also because Harbaugh was a foregone conclusion from pretty much day 1 even though it officially took a month to happen. We all honestly were unsure what was going to happen with this job until yesterday when were a little over a week in.
Unsure, and terrified at some of the names being floated. I think people just want to know for sure that it isn’t someone who brings no excitement with him.
Harbaugh was a foregone conclusion from pretty much day 1
I don't think we saw it that way at the time. There were lots of "He'll never leave the pros" articles and sound bites in circulation. And of course Oakland was still in play.
It wasn't until about three weeks in (around Christmas) that it clearly seemed like it was happening.
It seemed interminable at the time...
Harbaugh will never leave the NFL to go Michigan.
We knew Harbaugh was the only candidate before he was even available! It took a while for San Fran to ex-employ him. Jim wasn't going to resign, and thus lose a lot of contract value, so we had to wait forever for things to 'officially' start moving...
Because you have been stuck in purgatory reading 3,000 Maizen posts per day.
Honestly? I think because people were coming off of the Hoke/RR eras and so a chance to not go through another couple years of shit made people more patient. The basketball team played for a title 2 years ago and made a good run last year. Nobody wants to move on from Beilein.
Also, Maizen hadn't figured out the internet yet so you had fewer shitposts.
So... Preemptive party hat emojis were preemptive?
Just let Brian post his Welcome already!
I’m hearing from my sources that Golden State is still in play.
I love this GIF applies to this hire, as well. All the JH's to A2!
thats handy
All your all-star alumni sport-balling JH are belong to us
Will Jon Horford join the staff?
You don’t say..
I'll admit I haven't always been the biggest Warde fan, but I really have to give it to him on this one, assuming it's true. Hell of a good job.
Based on what? Not saying Howard won't be a decent coach, but he was one of the few people that would likely accept the job no matter what. Warde appeared to have inquired with other coaches that declined. He then went to Howard who brings plenty of positives as well as negatives as a candidate.
Not Warde's fault - the timing was awful - but not really sure what classifies this as a "hell of a good job".
I don't get why so many are doubtful of Manuel. Is it just residual AD-hate from the Brandon era? What has he done that's so bad?
Because he didn't publicly get on the case of B1G with the spot that we don't speak of
Which would have accomplished...?
It wasn't the spot that he should have been shouting about. The spot was at least plausibly correct. What was infuriating was that the refs gave OSU a free hand to mug every Michigan receiver in the fourth quarter (to the point that the BiG had to later apologize officially).. Warde let that pass without comment.

I was giving this some thought and it deserves a better post by someone more intelligent than me. But it seems like Warde has been unremarkable during his tenure so far. There has been some legitimate concern that he didn't do enough to keep Beilein earlier this month when he reportedly knew about the Cavs offer. There wasn't a dance with one of the big names - not that any of us really expected one - but it seems disappointing to not even get any interest from a single upper-tier coach. At the end, it probably doesn't matter.
Posters have also grumbled about the football scheduling (eg not advocating for the series with ND to restart at home or not scheduling a tune-up before heading to S Bend to play under the lights).
Otherwise, he hasn't done anything that we can point to as a smashing success, for what all that's worth. But sometimes that gig is about making the trains run on time and Warde has generally kept things afloat. I suppose if he's able to close this negotiation with Juwan, we could call it a positive accomplishment. Many others (hey, Maizen) will not.
The Rhonda Faehn situation was a bit of a fiasco. But outside of that, he's been largely untested as an AD until now (in terms of major hires/decisions).
will not believe it until I see the flight aware tracking
Let's do this.
this tweet is better than rothstein's. this reads like "they are in the process of negotiating a contract like every time colleges and coaches negotiate contracts."
I certainly hope Juwan does great if he get's the job (or when). I just don't think he's the best hire at this point. Unfortunately John Beilein didnt do us any favors leaving when he did and left us in this position.
#GoBlue
Who’s the best hire. Warde wants to know.
The other guy. You know, that dude who's been uber successful everywhere he coaches but has always secretly dreamed of being the head coach for Michigan basketball. The guy who will assure us of a never-ending series of B1G championships and tournament victories all the while running a program that makes Beilein look like Sean Miller it's so squeeky clean. A basic cross between the Golden State Warriors and the New England Patriots.
That guy.
He's hired!
Now...where do I find him and who is he!?
My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with a girl who saw that guy pass-out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious
You don't offer unless you think you can get them to accept. I'd be pretty surprised if he isn't the coach formally by tomorrow morning.
There will be misplaced enthusiasm on this board for this hire mainly because of the fondness of the fab five era but all I remember is basketball without discipline. Juwan has zero head coaching experience let alone head coaching experience at the highest level with a major program.
The leaders and the best should stop making poor choices that wastes years for the program.
