I’ll bet there is one injury (or “injury”)that ends a season and two others leave. I guess I’m taking the over.
It has to be over, right? After Peters we are at 84 not counting any walkons I believe. Walkons like Tru Wilson, Glasgow, Will Hart, Nate Schoenle, etc.. who have been on scholarship before.
They are still walkons. Not uncommon for walkons to get extra scholarships for one year if they have them available, doesn't mean they get them every year. Occasionally you get guys who earn full 4 year scholarships, guys like the elder Glasgows, Griese etc.., not sure if any of these guys are in that class.
Having said that, more departures would not surprise me at all.
Yeah, FBS teams have to give scholarships to 85 players, so even if 20 more guys leave, you would have 85 guys on scholarship. It's just that 21 of them would be walk-ons.
We're at 85 counting Glasgow, Wilson, Schoenle and Hart.
I assume walkons are told their status when they are given scholarships, whether it's permanent or just for a semester. I can't imagine Wilson, Glasgow and Hart not being guaranteed scholarships.
Looking at Magnus’ list on TTB we’re at 84 not counting them, though he includes Evans so I will say 83.
I agree that it’s highly unlikely they aren’t on scholarship. There are some obvious candidates to transfer, so I can see us getting to 85 without any major surprises.
Thanks, I was trying to use the chart on this site. Magnus has a better list.
my bold know-nothing intuition that's correct sometimes goes for the over. i see 4-5 departures likely. is it bad form to name who i think will leave given that i have no actual information?
One man's opinion on the question of "bad form":
Let's say you think that linebacker Joe Schmoe is a likely transfer and you say so. I'll assume that you're not doing it with any malice - it's just innocent speculation on blog devoted to UM football.
The problem with that, of course, is that everyone isn't going to take it innocently - some will take it as hard fact just because they saw it online, and they'll repeat it. And pretty soon that speculation turns into wild rumor, and Joe Schmoe is getting slammed online by people who are outraged that he's bailing on Michigan, when he actually hasn't said anything, and may not have any plans to.
That may sound alarmist, but in this era of juicy rumors so often being mistaken as hard fact, it's not that unbelievable. So when it comes to speculating without information and actually using someone's name, I'd think twice.
I really don't see that as the problem of the person who is saying it originally, though. If other people cannot adjudge the difference between just discussing something and a person who is making a claim based on knowledge or facts it is really the listeners problem, not the speaker.
That is why I don't really understand the common take that it is "bad form" to speculate. I don't think it was bad form for me to speculate "he gone" about Jordan Poole after the MSU game at Crisler. If it looks like a duck.... ya know. I have never understood why people get all worked up when somebody says "I think he might transfer" or something similar like the person saying it is engaged in some wild slander. It's just, like, my opinion man.
lots of people on here have been saying Austin Davis is going to transfer despite no evidence indicating that. Just because people want to build a video game roster and his OVR rating is too low they want to run him out of town. In fact Austin himself has had to address these "rumors", so while I get what you're saying I do think just throwing out names as if you hope they leave is not a good practice.
it's considered bad form on the board to speculate about a specific individual, yes. Then again, not much that is considered bad form on the board is adhered to so....
I try to avoid it because it seems like a direct shot at a kid (merited or not) and often leads to discussions about the player than can be less than kind, digging into speculation on everything from character to effort to talents that aren't usually fact based.
Once heard the following: if you're thinking about saying something, ask yourself is it kind, is it necessary and is it true? if it's not a least two of those, you probably don't need to say it.
Kind, necessary and true? I think you have shut the internet down completely, not to mention 95+% of all human speech. St. Benedict would be proud.
appreciate everyone's take on it, will just pass on "naming names" to avoid needless rumor-starting. still do think there will be some notable attrition that will disappoint folks.
We seem to always have some shitty unexpected attrition. I’ll take “over” for sure.
This is why getting best talent every single year is important. Having a down year in recruiting can really leave some huge issues.
Definitely. A down year plus attrition of presumed/future starters and you're right back in the hole. This is why I'm fine with "processing". Get as many dudes on campus as possible, give them the opportunity to earn their place and if it doesn't work out... part ways.
Of course, some blue hair will have a problem with it, but they also have a problem losing to OSU constantly.
It is the only way to go(recruiting wise) if you want to compete for championships.
The next way is scheduling properly. People can make fun of SEC all they want for their FCS team they put on schedule but it is smart and they get away with it. ND back on schedule was as big of a bonehead/money grab move as we have seen from athletic department in terms of games.
Two ways to look at it. If you’re doing your work upfront and recruiting the best possible players for your program, you should have more talent and contributors. When you are giving scholarships to MAC level players or below just to “bring in as much guys as possible” you need to move on from them quickly if you want to win.
I’ll take the over for $1000 Alex
I would think/hope under at this point but it does seem like we are trending towards an increase in playing time related transition across College Football. Some of the incoming freshman not yet on campus may create an impetus for guys to look around. Safety, O-Line seem to be the position groups where I could most likely see that happening.
Some of the incoming freshmen not yet on campus may not make it to September. Ahmir Mitchell, Austin White, Kelly Baraka. (AM and AM may have been EEs).
Over. The SA trip is about over, so next few weeks more will happen. Have too many TEs, kickers, a couple of firm handshakes for guys not all-in, always a surprise or two for PT reasons. Probably 5-7 potential candidates, maybe more given the big elite class about to show up in June.
Over. Too many kickers/punters. Maybe someone on the stacked O Line leaves once the freshmen come into town and crowd the room. Same could be said for guys that won’t be much time in the secondary. I’ll say 3 more sounds fair
I’ll take over. The South Africa trip alone will cause a few to enter the transfer portal, and should warrant waivers for immediate eligibility. 1.Players exposed to racist safaris—searched out white rhinos but no black or Asian rhinos. 2. Negligent attitude towards player safety—non-seatbelted safarians within ten feet of wild, deadly lions. 3. Needless exposure to medical issues due to wanton interaction with rhino dung—dengue fever, malaria, porphyria ... who knows what gets spread in those “?hole” countries.

Looks like that “/s” didn’t help you one bit
you tried really hard, i will give you that.
I'll upvote you, Scanner - that was quality snark, right there!! But Cesar Ruiz disagrees with the negligent part about getting within 10 feet of wild, deadly lions. He wants to smell a lion's breath!!!
Yeah, that's some crazy talk from Cesar... (He actually said that - you can hear on this week's AED podcast.)
Fun fact. The white rhino is not named for its color, but as a corruption of the Dutch word for wide, which referred to its upper lip. The black rhino, which has a narrow lip, was then named because it wasn’t “white”.
I’ll take the over and say 3. Hopefully no skill guys, but maybe a DL, OL, and K.
Well, if I had to guess - and I don't have to, but I am sitting in a meeting and I am bored, so I will - then I would have to guess the over on on this one if it is set at 2.5. I don't think it would be that much over though. Perhaps 3-4. It doesn't seem like we're setting up for a dramatic summer, if you will. At least, not when these announcements will likely be buried among threads which ask people to describe the best meal they've had recently, or threads which strive to discuss why periwinkle is a color and not the last name of a game show host.
Did the cat on Blue Clues ever host a game show?
Without adding BP and Spider I’ll guess over, with 3. 1 Punter, 1 RB, and 1 DE. Just a guess obviously. Lol
Since we are already under, are there any grad transfers we are looking to get (besides Dana)? Is the portal still be actively mined?
taking the over. My guess would be an Anchor, K and an OG. Those seem to be the spots with saturation right now.
I hate the premise of this thread, but I'll join in and take the over. I think there are a LOT of TE's and OL that will see some writing.
That said, it pains me to think about kids wanting to leave the program. I prefer to think that they'd rather stay, but just see no path to PT. I can't fault someone for seeking out more PT when it's clear they won't get it at UM. And I think this is most often the case - certainly with BP and Miles Sims. There are others, though, that appear to have wanted to leave for whatever reasons - Aubrey Solomon, for one. I get personal/personality differences, I just hope there was no malice from either side in those cases.
TEs? Don't we only have 5 on scholarship, 3 of which have freshmen eligibility? Unless Gattis doesn't use TEs, seems a little early to be leaving for playing time.

I could see a few of OL, LB, S, and K maybe moving on. Those positions are pretty deep right now
I'll take the over easily. Between firm handshakes and kids upset about PT, it's a no brainer.
Over...unless it's under.
I'm going with the push
.....someone gets caught in the transfer portal and only half of him makes it out.
