We still had a great season
10-2, with losses to 2 NY6/CFP teams. Yes, the last loss was bad, but we still beat PSU/MSU/Wisconsin and also had a top5 defense otherwise. Today was a total anomaly.
But go ahead, keep being upset at the program and where things are at. Today was a bad day, but the sun will rise tomorrow.
November 24th, 2018 at 4:56 PM ^
Do you have proof the sun will rise?
November 24th, 2018 at 5:18 PM ^
The sun will rise and it will shine on what has been a "good" season but not even close to a "great" season. We got absolutely decimated by Ohio State when this was a game we were supposed to win. Jim Harbaugh is now 0-4 against OSU and two of those games he was "supposed" to win. Dude is getting paid a whole lot of jack to be "good".
November 24th, 2018 at 5:49 PM ^
It overall wasn't a bad season. That being said, another OSU loss last week or to Penn State would have won us the division making this easier to swallow. With the way OSU keeps winning I cannot still fathom why people continue root for them so we can "ruin their season". HELLO? JOHN FUCKING COOOPER DOES NOT COACH THEM ANYMORE.
November 24th, 2018 at 6:06 PM ^
I don't know if winning the division would make me feel better. Maybe Harbaugh, but I would still feel empty and fucking miserable.
November 24th, 2018 at 11:24 PM ^
And tell us all who the fuck else is going to be the coach at Michigan. I'll wait.
November 25th, 2018 at 10:29 AM ^
Every time this question is asked, the fire Harbaugh clowns never have an answer.
The Michigan HC has to be many things that head coaches of other programs do not have to be. True, winning a B1G, beating Ohio State, and winning a NC are three things he has not done. Yet. Every other responsibility he's already brought up to the stringent standards that Michigan demands. As an alum of course I want to win every game, but building and maintaining a program that has its highest priorities intact is first and foremost and Harbaugh checks all those boxes.
Would you want to be Notre Dame? They are undefeated but most of their alumni are completely confused because they can't stand that Brian Kelly is the face of their program, an obviously ruthless asshole who cares about nothing but winning.
If you want a program that whores its entire university out to win football games, there are dozens of schools you can root for, including Ohio State. Yesterday was awful, but I'm still perfectly comfortable with Jim Harbaugh.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:20 PM ^
Yes, would like other proof besides induction, given implication for The Game next year...
November 24th, 2018 at 5:28 PM ^
Meyer is the smart kid who sits at the back of your math class. He's disinterested much of the time; he fails to turn in homework assignments; he underachieves.
But on an exam he cares about, he destroys everyone.
Harbaugh is the good kid who sits on the front row. He's always taking notes, never misses an assignment, studies hard for every test, and maximizes his talent.
But on the final exam--against a motivated Meyer--he's outgunned.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:49 PM ^
Nah Meyer just beat up Jim and took his milk money again.
November 24th, 2018 at 4:56 PM ^
NO WE DID NOT!
November 24th, 2018 at 4:56 PM ^
10-2, is a bad season?
What an entitled bitch you are.
November 24th, 2018 at 4:59 PM ^
The one who began as a Michigan football fan in the 90s scrub.
Michigan won several Big 10 championships then and barely lost to OSU. Michigan hasn't won a Big 10 championship since 2004 and has only beaten OSU once.
Michigan's season is measured by two goals: Winning the Big 10 championship and beating OSU. We did neither and thus the season is a failure.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:03 PM ^
Once again, does beating a good Wisconsin team (top 15/20 at the time) not matter? We blew out a good PSU team. We went into East Lansing and kicked their ass.
I hate the fact we didn't win the division and lost to OSU again, but I don't see how it's a failure.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:06 PM ^
Check Michigan's record versus Wisconsin. A successful season for Michigan will never be determined by what it does against Wisconsin and it never will.
You are probably a young fan which is fine but talk to anyone over the age of 35 including any Michigan football athlete and they will correct you on expectations.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
I'm 37, graduated UM in 04.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:17 PM ^
When you've watched enough seasons of Michigan football, you will realize that your expectations for success are unrealistic. This wasn't a great season, because it didn't end in a Big Ten Championship. It was, however, an excellent season, marked by a whole host of very satisfying victories and marred by a couple of agonizing losses. That's been typical of a huge number of successful Michigan seasons.
You are probably a young fan which is fine but talk to anyone over the age of 35 including any Michigan football athlete and they will correct you on expectations.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:36 PM ^
Which is exactly why this team keeps continuing to fail.
November 24th, 2018 at 6:08 PM ^
Yes, only OSU fans can have “unreasonable” expectations and achieve them. We should be jumping for joy at 2-14 against OSU because we beat Wisconsin and Penn St.
November 25th, 2018 at 9:23 AM ^
I'm over that, and if we win 10 or 11 games every year from now on, beating MSU regularly, I'm good.
It's time for the fanbase to fact the modern fact: with Meyer, OSU is better at football than we are. Period. They recruit better, they have a much better state for talent, and Meyer coaches better than us.
I'm all in for Harbaugh, but he's not as good as Meyer and that clearly won't change until Meyer leaves.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:17 PM ^
Wisconsin turned out to be not nearly as good as everyone thought they'd be and State lost to Nebraska last week. THose wins aren't as impressive now as when they happened.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:21 PM ^
And PSU wasn’t healthy.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:26 PM ^
Still very satisfying. I mean come on, how did that part of the schedule look after the ND game??
November 24th, 2018 at 5:31 PM ^
Lol, Wisconsin is losing to Minnesota right now on senior day. Msu is tied with Rutgers. Both those teams are trash, PSU is literally the only W Michigan can hang their hat on.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:17 PM ^
(double post, sorry)
November 24th, 2018 at 5:30 PM ^
Wisconsin is about to lose at home to Minnesota and finish 7-5. That win over them means nothing.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:37 PM ^
Beating Wisconsin doesn't matter. Blowing out PSU doesn't matter. I would gladly have lost to Wisconsin and Penn State to win this, but that isn't how it works. If we don't beat OSU nothing else matters to me at this point. You can feel how you want. I can feel how I want. I will never be happy again.
November 24th, 2018 at 6:42 PM ^
That’s a lie. If we had lost to Wisconsin and PSU and beat Ohio State, you would’ve been bitching about this team not meeting expectations because we would’ve beaten the Buckeyes while losing to those underwhelming teams.
November 24th, 2018 at 7:20 PM ^
Yep...we didn't have fan boards...for the most part...then, but in 95 and 96 this is exactly what they would have looked like
November 24th, 2018 at 6:05 PM ^
Fuck off dickwad.
November 24th, 2018 at 7:55 PM ^
A good Wisconsin team that just lost by 3 TDs at home today against fucking Minnesota. A tough Sparty team that needed an end zone INT in the last minute to hold off Rutger at home 14-10. A good Penn St. team that lost at home to Sparty. You are overrating the quality of those 3 wins. Those wins in 2017 would have looked a lot more impressive.
November 24th, 2018 at 8:15 PM ^
No, not three hours after giving up 62 points to OSU. Those games against what proved to be average teams do not mean as much as we all hoped they meant when we won.
I'm torn a bit here. I thought we could win this game and the BIG 10 title but was certain we'd get curb stomped by Bama. We just got our curb stomping two games earlier than I expected.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:03 PM ^
I became a fan in the early 90’s too but I’m not an immature asshat like you. It was a good season. Grow up.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
I get called a bi@$h and respond with the word scrub and you call me an immature asshat?
I can only imagine the contempt you have for Coach Harbaugh's demeanor. I am entitled to my opinion and that opinion was drilled into me by historical expectations of men far greater than you.
Now go enjoy your 10 and 2 along with a side loss of 62 to 39.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:14 PM ^
10-2 is a good season in the abstract. A season shouldn’t be considered a bad season just because of a loss against OSU. HOWEVER, you have to view the season in context. And the context is we have never been in the playoffs and had a clear path ahead of us. We have not won the Big Ten in many years and had a clear path ahead of us. We lose and lose to OSU, and seemed to have the upper hand this year. So, yeah, 10-2 is a disappointment IN CONTEXT. If we had won against OSU five of the last ten years, it’s a good season this year. Another loss to OSU, another failure to win the Big Ten, losing to two of our three main rivals, missing an clear path to the playoffs. Yeah, it was a crappy season, the beat downs of PSU etc. notwithstanding.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:41 PM ^
Plus this one could do disproportionate damage on the recruiting trail...
November 24th, 2018 at 5:16 PM ^
You call someone an asshat because you don't like what he said? He didn't call foul names, just a bit of a dig with a word far less offensive thatn asshat. It's pretty easy to see who the asshat is here sonny boy.
Michigan fan from my earliest memories in the 70s and a 1991 grad who can say whatever the hell I want about expectations for The Game.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:18 PM ^
Let's not overly romanticize the 1990s. These were our records:
9-3
10-2
9-0-3
8-4
8-4
9-4
8-4
12-0
10-3
10-2
We did beat John Cooper most of the time, but he was not a .900 coach like Urban Meyer. Meyer's a scumbag but he is an unbelievably successful coach.
Also, back then we could share the conference title. If that were still true we'd be B1G champs right now.
I wouldn't say this is a great season after today's debacle, but it's a pretty good season and basically in line with our program history over the past 40 years, other than the RichRod/Hoke years.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:28 PM ^
I think the biggest things people miss are in the context.
The CFP, Alabama's current run, the introduction of conference championship games... they all obscure how different college football was in our sepia tinted "glory days". It's not like we had constantly been in title contention pre-The Horror. We would win 9-10 games a year and beat Ohio State teams that were oftentimes also not in national contention for Big Ten titles, which were sometimes shares of titles. We did sometimes say that all we needed was to beat OSU for it to be a successful season, but that was because most fans at the time legitimately believed a share of the B1G and a Rose Bowl loss was a GREAT season. And I simply don't believe that the people whining about how this was a terrible season comprehend that fact.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:32 PM ^
Three of those years had outright Big 10 championships. Seven of those years resulted in victories over Ohio State. One of those years resulted in a national championship.
Sure the number of 10 win seasons this decade has been similar but we would have only snuffed one co-championship in that time and one victory over Ohio State.
Sorry but 90s > 2010s
Also, I realize there is still one year to go and Michigan could very well win the national championship but until that happens the 1990s were a far superior decade.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:43 PM ^
I do have think you should consider that we might be talking about a very different decade if Harbaugh comes here in 2011 instead of going to San Francisco. The Hoke era was a massive fucking waste of time.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:48 PM ^
Now that I can't argue and its possible that our record versus OSU would be different as well since the matchup would have been Harbaugh vs Tressel for the start of that decade. Alas, we did not see Harbaugh coach the Michigan sideline for those beginning years and the nineties are arguably better because of it.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:47 PM ^
Obviously the 1990s were better than the 2010s. I'd never claim otherwise. We had Richrod and Hoke coaching us for half this decade. But the idea that we would have thought 10-2 sucked in the '90s is a stretch.
BTW, two of our three outright titles in the '90s came in '91 and '92 - before PSU joined the league, and while OSU was down. It was definitely easier to compete against John Cooper than Urban Meyer. Both Mo and Lloyd dominated against him.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:27 PM ^
I'd rather lose to fucking Rutgers and Maryland than ND and Ohio St, especially playing like that. I'm usually Johnny-Fucking-Positive around here, but this performance has me really pissed off.
This team had absolutely everything to play for and they came out and played like garbage. I know I'll probably come to my senses later but if you told me right now that Harbaugh was leaving for the NFL or another team or was fired I'd probably be like 'fine'.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:44 PM ^
Agree times one million
November 24th, 2018 at 5:05 PM ^
It's nice that we won 10 games but that game plan sucked. Our WR's couldn't be covered by that shoddy OSU secondary and we were way too conservative.
We needed to utilize that way more, Harbaugh seems way too stubborn and the personnel decisions were pissing me off, he kept taking Higdon out of the game right after a good run on a few occasions, why?
Also, McCurry was playing way too much, we have elite WR's, why was he playing as much as he was when we're going up against elite talent?
November 24th, 2018 at 5:24 PM ^
Our problem was keeping Shea upright. Our OL was absolutely owned by the OSU DL. Shea was running for his life most pass plays.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:34 PM ^
Simple explanation for the loss is Michigan got owned in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:47 PM ^
That is exactly right on the nose. Shea was pressured, Haskins was not. Shea' performance was pretty good given that pressure. If the pressure were reversed, I think overall QB performance would have been reversed, and possibly the score.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:31 PM ^
You stated a “great season,” which is not the same as good. 10 wins is a good season. That you’re calling someone a bitch is pathetic as fuck. First, why be sexist? Two, why can’t you handle the difference of opinion without resorting to insulting another fan for their perspective. Third, you act like him or her disagreeing means he/she is not happy to have won those games.
However, a great fucking season does not result in the worst beat down I’ve ever seen my team take, and in The Game, with National Playoff implications. Fuck with your morality schpeel and your inability to let others vent.
The team was beat down, stomped, throttled. That’s not a great season. In a great season, ones team doesn’t lose, and sure as hell doesn’t get put in a submission hold.
I have nothing but love for UM, but fuck the fuck off with the name calling.
November 24th, 2018 at 5:32 PM ^
Fuck off. This was not a great season. You’re probably the parent that’s in charge of getting the kids participation trophies.
Lost to OSU. No Big Ten championship. No playoff. In what world is this is a great season. Ridiculous post.
