Can we petition the Big Ten to get John O’neill fired?
Year after year this guy and his crew is a shit show. What does it take to get this guy fired? Standing 3 feet from an obvious cheap shot, no call. Umpire gets the ball kicked out of his hand, no call. I’m not typically one to bitch about refs but this guy has earned it.
November 17th, 2018 at 6:54 PM ^
He should not be a ref in college football.
November 17th, 2018 at 6:55 PM ^
He shouldn’t ref Pop Warner.
November 17th, 2018 at 6:56 PM ^
We got fucked at the end of the half
November 17th, 2018 at 9:42 PM ^
It was amazing how quickly and flawlessly the spotted the ball all game for IU to go hurry up. But, they hVe 5 seconds to spot the ball for michigan and everyone gets butterfingers.
November 17th, 2018 at 6:58 PM ^
It’s been ridiculous
November 17th, 2018 at 7:00 PM ^
In theory, this is “Hell yeah!”
In practice, it looks like this weak ass shit: https://www.change.org/p/jim-delaney-get-referee-john-o-neill-and-his-team-fired
November 17th, 2018 at 7:07 PM ^
Doubt it, but I want them to send the film in on 72 for the dirty play O'Neill missed right in front of him. Ridiculous.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:14 PM ^
He's the absolute worst. The end of 1st quarter when we clearly snapped the ball before the clock hit zeroes, the dropped and kicked ball at the end of the 1st half, the cheap shot on Chase and the bs pass interference call just now on metellus. Complete piece of shit of a human being
November 17th, 2018 at 7:18 PM ^
Anyone have a gif of the kicked ball?
November 17th, 2018 at 10:32 PM ^

Not sure how the ref thought that was unintentional. Oh well. We can be okay with those things and have the film sent in after the fact since we won. To Victors got the spoils...of winning AND calling out the other team’s asshatty nature.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:21 PM ^
Completely agree. He is BAD at his job.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:22 PM ^
They let IU play like cheap-ass bastards all game and now Edwards is coming off on a stretcher. Fuck IU and these refs.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:24 PM ^
I am so not one to complain about refs but jesus this shit is just wrong. There's nothing more I hate than a ref who wants the game to run through him.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:25 PM ^
I tell you what, that number 76 wasn't ejected from the game, chase gets held on every play. I really think we should leave the big ten. Fuck MSU. Fuck John O'Neal, Fuck OSU, Fuck PSU. Fuck the entire west side (except you 2pac).
We shouldnt get penelatized for being Michigan. We should leave. Join the Sec we would be ranked #2
November 17th, 2018 at 7:29 PM ^
I agree. ACC would welcome them open arms
November 17th, 2018 at 8:41 PM ^
Yeah I hate penelaties. Why are we the only ones who get them.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:27 PM ^
Make no mistake about it, Indiana came to play (hence #beatIndiana). But these refs are a disgrace today.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:27 PM ^
And he still could have blocked the hell out of him without the launch into his chin. WTF.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:28 PM ^
They should. Indiana's cheap stuff all game and now Edward's down. Cheap shot on Chase too. That guy should have been tossed.
Every time his crew refs a game we get screwed

We won’t get them 2 weeks in a row, that can’t happen, right. Last week I heard the MSU announcers on WJR complaining about how bad O’Neil crew is.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:40 PM ^
Well they let TV Ted go in hoops so there is hope. You condone what you permit and this crew is a nightmare every weekend.
November 17th, 2018 at 8:35 PM ^
Anyone know if this is true? I have never heard of a rule that bars same crew from seeing a team two weeks in a row.
They failed to call penalties on several cheap shots and on the 'kick' at the end of the half. PI on Metellus should have been offensive PI.
Because of the storm trooper march, the refs for the M-MSU game had a quick flag on cheap shots and kept the game under control.
Today's crew sort of lost control of the game.
November 17th, 2018 at 7:41 PM ^
He completely lost control of the game
November 17th, 2018 at 7:46 PM ^
How about storm the field and beat the crap out of him
November 17th, 2018 at 7:52 PM ^
Give him the Ted Valentine treatment, please for the love of god. Instead the B1G will fine Harbaugh for complaining about obvious gross incompetence
November 17th, 2018 at 8:10 PM ^
I agree. I’ll sign. Also, FOIA the shit out of Delaney, O’Neil and Big Ten officiating.
November 18th, 2018 at 8:50 AM ^
BIG is a private entity and not subject to FOIA
November 17th, 2018 at 8:17 PM ^
Guy is an incompetent fuck tard. Get his old ass off the field before more kids get hurt.
November 17th, 2018 at 8:34 PM ^
was thinking of very many expletives tagged to his name during the game
November 17th, 2018 at 8:46 PM ^
Denali need to go first. Then John O’Neil. He was in two of our games this season. Very strange set up. Usually he will only ref one of our game each year. It was MSU, or Iowa in the past few season.
November 17th, 2018 at 8:59 PM ^
Refs main job is safety not watching the game
November 17th, 2018 at 9:04 PM ^
I would sign for sure.
November 17th, 2018 at 10:14 PM ^
Agree. He should not be allowed to ref games anymore. Guy is a disgrace.
November 17th, 2018 at 10:16 PM ^
I'm quite displeased the Fuck John O Neill thread was taken down. That man deserves the wrath from our fan base. Put it back up.
November 17th, 2018 at 10:55 PM ^
It's like he's pulling a George Constanza and trying to get fired so another conference can hire him. Please pull the trigger Delany.
November 17th, 2018 at 11:05 PM ^
I'm curious:
1. Who reviews the referees? Is there a Big Ten head of referees that looks at each game and grades out the teams?
2. How competitive is it to get a Big Ten referring gig? From reading articles about MLB umpires, it can be a long haul but they have a lot of people.
3. How much turnover is there? When the basketball ref Ted Valentine didn't get another contract that made news - so is it rare for there to be an annual turnover?
Ideally you want a ref team that is experienced, so they know the tricks and aren't fooled; mature enough not to be drawn into making themselves part of the game; fit enough to keep up with the game; knowledgeable about the teams/venues but NOT too cozy or chummy.
Being a ref is a tough job, and maybe it is time to make it a full time one - AND make it more competitive by turning over the lower scoring teams each year and opening it up for new blood/fresh eyes.
November 18th, 2018 at 8:33 AM ^
1. Yes, there's a head of officiating for the BigTen.
2. Extremely competitive. Guys have to prove their worth in HS/D3/D2/lower level D1 for years sometimes before getting the call.
3. There is turnover, but as mentioned in #2, to get their you have to prove your worth; they don't take fliers. They take guys they think will make it and are invested in. You'd have to suddenly go from very good to very bad to get a hook, but I've heard of it happening.
source: experience with and talking to officials at those levels
4. The O'Neil hate is pretty ridiculous here. It's basically the same whining every fan base does against every official who they can recognize. That the game didn't turn into a shit show after #72's unsportsmanlike is partially attributable to the job the officiating team did to calm nerves. Also, of course, a long delay where a player's long-term health is a concern certainly puts things in perspective.
But people are making incindiary comments (and others are liking them) because:
The kicked ball out of the refs hands... yeah, I was pissed. Pretty tough for an official to ascertain intent in the moment and it still would have been borderline whether the snap got off. PLUS, Harbaugh said they were going to clock it. If the snap got off and they took the 1-1.5seconds to clock it, they probably still don't get another snap. It was poor time-management by Michigan that cost them points at the end of the half, not the officials. Either way, it's not O'Neil's call to make.
The Chase injury... honestly, it seems nobody that is unbiased on the Internet is claiming it was a dirty hit. A little unnecessary? I think so. Happens every other play in football? Probably. This again is not a play O'Neil is watching as he is the "R." He is watching the QB all the way through the play. This is the Center Judge's call, not O'Neils.
Pass Interference... I never fucking know what pass interference is, so I don't even bother. I do know that as the R, O'Neil has nothing to do with decided pass interference. If guys on his crew are getting it wrong, it's not really on him. He doesn't pick his own crew. It's on the B10 office.
I honestly have no opinion one way or the other on O'Neil. But it's hilarious to me that because people recognize him (because he's been around), they think he specifically hates Michigan. It makes the fanbase seem like butthurt Internet losers.

I get it some people like to protect officials because they believe the job is difficult. I don’t disagree the job is difficult, but there needs to be some accountability for just completely botching plays. The kicked ball is an easy call. It does not matter whether the player intentionally or unintentionally kicked it. Time should have been put back on the clock.
PI is a difficult call, so it is hard to get mad at officials for that. The same could be said for holding. The key with those calls is consistency throughout the game.
O’Neill is known around the entire Big Ten as a garbage official. It’s not just him, it’s his entire crew. Go back and look at PSU when they played OSU in 2014 or 2015. PSU got hosed by this crew numerous times to the point Franklin made a couple of comments about it. It’s not just judgement calls that O’Neill’s crew botches, it’s the clear cut calls, like the kicked ball. There are some that think his crew is in on games based on the way they call them. I tend to agree with that thought based on what I have seen from them over the years.
November 18th, 2018 at 10:53 AM ^
No way you can miss the kicked ball. At that exact moment the entirety of interest of all parties in the game and the whole fucking stadium is getting the ball spotted so the team has an opportunity to spike the clock. A dude takes two steps over and kicks it OUT OF THE REFEREE'S HAND. If you miss that you are not even aware at the level of a house plant.
November 18th, 2018 at 1:57 PM ^
There were so many missed calls, it's almost shocking. Btw, one that people are not talking about yet - early in the second half, DPJ caught a ball in the middle coming back to Patterson and while being tacked an Indiana LB - #47 - targeted DPJ. The LB changed his direction and went right for DPJ's head. There wasn't a lot of contact but there was some and DPJ's head snapped. And yet, no call of course.
