OT - Snowmageddon POSBANG
The weather predictions for today and tonight have been all over the news with warnings of a nasty winter storm, so what better excuse for a POSBANG?! North of Detroit, we've only gotten about an inch of snow so far. The weather reports are saying the afternoon should bring the heaviest snow. Possible accumulation of 8-14 inches depending on your area. Monday and Tuesday we may set records for low temperatures. Be safe out there!

"God is executing here in the SE side of city of GR. "
This sounds scary.

Blizzard just kicked into overdrive here on the Rockford/Lowell border. They're saying 8-10 inches but of course there are still some crazy ice fishermen still sitting out on the ice. Spent 15 minutes shoveling until I Lee Corso'd it ("Ahhhhh Fuckkkk it....") and came back inside.

"Just shy of 11 am" doesn't sound like that much snow to me. Now if it were well over 2 pm or something, then I would get worried.

While recent weather hystical history is with you, your skeptical attitude will not stop the power of this POSBANG! You get an upvote!

A little over 700 miles south east of AA we still havent seen a flake of snow. but the percipitation is supposed to be the most we've received all year!!! All kidding aside, stay safe and warm up there!

I noticed a bunch of Facebook-posted pics of insane lines at Meijer and other grocery stores. It doesn't surprise me everyone is running out.

All I needed were my regular groceries for the week
January 5th, 2014 at 10:57 AM ^
yesterday afternoon in Ann Arbor, and it was crazy in both places. All the parking spaces in front of the Krogers on Maple were taken. Surprisingly, the checkout line didn't take that long. Glad we were able to avoid Meijer's. I hope everyone who has to travel, does so safely. The Michigan basketball game should end before the really heavy stuff arrives.

I was in that store about 6pm. There was no milk to be had, and even the produce section was wiped out.
Who buys celery and carrots when it's end of the world? I'd be setting in a supply of Lagavulin if that were the case.

What are these fun aspects of winter of which you speak? Lived in the upper midwest my whole life, and all winter means to me is shoveling snow, slower traffic, and the fairer gender bundling up.
January 5th, 2014 at 12:11 PM ^
I take it you're not the outdoor type.
January 5th, 2014 at 12:18 PM ^
I'm an outdoor type but not much for winter stuff. Don't ski/snowboard, don't own snow mobiles. Enjoyed sledding as a kid but kinda meh on it in my mid-20s. Not reall sure what else there is to do. I just don't like being cold.

There's always ice fishing and small game hunting.
January 5th, 2014 at 12:33 PM ^
Love fishing but I've been ice fishing once and didn't really care for it. Not much of a hunter either (of any kind).
January 5th, 2014 at 12:46 PM ^
Best way to ice fish is to find a lake with some decent pike and set some tip-ups. Then just sit around with your friends and drink until a flag pops up.

this storm is just sitting there. Thunderstorms in southern Illinois and Indiana ... I wouldn't chance I-69. Better chance on 94 ... but better yer stay home.
Go Blue!

Try to leave earlier rather than later. Right now, the snow isn't that hard. Have a safe trip!
January 5th, 2014 at 12:13 PM ^
If you take 94 be careful around the Hartford/Decatur area. That area is always a nightmare.

I'm not a meterologist, but I play one on mgoblog.com and the map tells me this one is for real. They have been right on so far.

There is almost a foot accumulated in my yard at the moment.

Americans might be the most easily frightened sheep on the planet. Costco and Krogers were wiped out by panicked, goggle-eyed, spittle-flecked hordes afraid that a few inches of frozen water were going to mean the end of western civilization. Many of these same people will think nothing of spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars traveling to locations specifically because of the accumulation of lots of snow so they can go swishing down the slopes on old barrel staves.
This is Michigan, ferfucksakes: it snows.
January 5th, 2014 at 9:19 AM ^
Isn't it better to have, like, food when you're snowed in?
January 5th, 2014 at 9:27 AM ^
Apparently people around here only run out of shit paper right before a snow storm. Otherwise they're always well stocked.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:19 AM ^
the three rolls in reserve should get me through this little bit o' snow...
why buy more? i never understood this buy of TP either.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:31 AM ^
Because when SHTF, you want some TP.
Seriously, it is always one of the very first necessities to run out during an emergency.
January 5th, 2014 at 11:11 AM ^
I guess that's because snow scares the shit out of people.
January 5th, 2014 at 11:53 AM ^
Have you ever been caught with no TP after a serious trip to the office?
January 5th, 2014 at 9:42 AM ^
It's a couple of days, not the end of civilization. I'm originally from up north and I love driving in this without the other cars. Around the Detroit area, too many don't know how to drive in this type of snow. They are the ones who scare me.
January 5th, 2014 at 10:40 AM ^
Americans might be the most easily frightened sheep on the planetNot just an American thing. I've been to Europe in the winter and they will freak out over much smaller amounts of snow - like 1-2 inches.
January 5th, 2014 at 11:01 AM ^
Where in Europe? I could see freakouts in southern Italy or Spain or maybe France. I would think any of the more northern areas and Scandinavia would be unfazed.
January 5th, 2014 at 11:31 AM ^
London and Paris. Just the mention of coming snowfall scared the crap out of people in both places and the stores were packed. (I heard about the "coming storm" when I was in London and then it happened when I was in Paris a few days later.) It turned out to be a pretty modest dusting. It would not have been enough to close anything down here, but quite a few businesses were closed over there.
This article came out the same winter I was there:

The Nordic/Eastern European countries are probably a little thicker-skinned, but Western Europeans completely lose it at the sight of the stuff coming down.
