Tim Banks, the co-DC at Penn State, has some very interesting new follows.

Tim Banks was born in Detroit and played at Central Michigan. He's currently the co-DC at Penn State. His newest Twitter follows caught my attention.

I REALLY wanted Clark Lea from Notre Dame, but he's off to be a head coach now.  I hadn't even considered a DC from Penn State.  Can somebody else tell me if this guy is worth looking into?  What other DC candidates are really out there?  I know I'd love Jim Leonard from Wisconsin (not likely tho), Derek Mason was thrown around (and has prior Harbaugh experience), Muschamp is a bad HC but a good defensive mind.

If this can help us match Penn State's defensive recruiting (Micah Parsons, yes please), and their results against Ohio State (they always keep it close to a degree), then I'd be very pleased with this.

I imagine Penn State has plenty of money for assistants since they also have a 100K stadium and play in the same conference. Coaches don't go from co-coordinating to position coach at a school in the same conference and with a similar stature when that job would naturally pay less. I'm guessing he is coming in as the DC and safety coach.

He was a coach and crootin coord at Kentucky a few years back, when we wanted him to come as the TE coach (or something).  His grab on fame is based on experience and knowledge in the Ohio high school leagues.  I suspect that if he left Kentucky, they would drop back into the nether regions that UK football used to wallow in.

Heard this guy was key in getting our in state kids to penn state ( king brothers etc) but I think we could do better for a dc! Maybe a position coach?   Because his recruiting in Detroit?

I can't see him replacing Don Brown straight up. It's not like PSU is a defensive goliath, even with pretty good talent. Maybe replace Shoop as S coach, add co-DC title here with a pay raise?

Do people seriously think we're going to poach a DC coaching a defensive goliath from a highly-ranked program? Get real. There are only 2 high-level DCs I could think of that I think we could definitely get. Charlie Strong and Will Muschamp. However, Muschamp has spent his entire career in the south. I wouldn't be optimistic about our chances there. Strong at least has a few years at Southern Illinois and Notre Dame.

No, why would a coordinator at a better program like Bama, OSU, Clemson, etc. leave there to come to MI?  But, we certainly could poach a good coordinator at a mid-level or smaller program or a star position coach from a blue blood.  Personally I'd look to go with a young guy who is a strong recruiter who is flexible in their approach.  We'll always have to play some power running teams like Wiscy & Iowa while at the same time playing spread passing attacks like OSU, Indiana, etc.  We need to be able to defend both.  It may not turn us into the shut down defenses we had in 2016 & 2018, but it may make us more flexible and if the offense continues to develop as planned we don't have to shut people out.  The reality is Bam, OSU, Clemson, etc. never shut down their opponents when they play each other.  No one is going to prevent those teams from scoring 30-plus points.  We have to score more than that against everyone as well.

I would love the hire from a recruiting standpoint. He has been a DC before and has worked up the chain from the MAC to the B1G.

Unlike Gattis, Banks has been a DC before -- and beat MSU. He was DC in 2009 when they beat Sparty and finished 12-2.

His track record as a D coordinator isn't great though. In fact, it was awful at Illinois.

In 2011, Illinois had the 9th ranked defense in CFB under the Zooker and Vic Koenning (I forgot how solid those teams were). Zook was fired because their offense was mediocre (also crazy what their standards had become - Zook went .500 that year and they fired him - at Illinois!).

Then Beckman brought Banks in to be DC, his defenses promptly went 62nd, 103rd and 79th in the next three years as DC and they demoted him to co-DC. Hasn't been a primary DC since.

Would be great to get him to make another lateral move to come home and coach safeties and be Co-DC, but underwhelming if he would be the primary DC, IMO.

I think this would be a good hire. Not only would we strengthen our ties to a lot of the local talent, we would be weakening one of our main competitors.

Plus, Banks has a ton of experience as a coach, specifically in the secondary (safties coach but played corner at Central). Find an elite D-Line coach to pair him with and we are off and running.

Banks would be a good person to bring on staff and I get that he would help shore up in state recruiting. But we get a lot of people complaining about a bunch of three stars and he helped signed a bunch of......3 stars. He’s a good recruiter, certainly better than Brown or a few others on defense. But I wouldn’t say he’s a great recruiter, just good. And I’m not sure he’s an elite defensive coordinator. So maybe give him a pay raise and a better title but still a co-DC? Bring someone else in who will work with him that is also a good/great recruiter.
