Warde can take a hike at…

Warde can take a hike at this point. This feels like the Bill Martin on a boat level of complacency, arrogance, and cluelessness from a few coaching transitions ago. Wish this AD would do everything in his power to surround Sherrone with the staff he needs to continue Harbaugh's success. All these coaches are proven commodities and culture builders by now.

Yeah, and you need a lot of…

Yeah, and you need a lot of those guys to do what we've done on this three year run. The story for a lot of people seems to be that we identified and developed a bunch of flyer-type guys into stars, like Kris Jenkins, but you can't ignore that we also had a lot of highly-sought guys on this team who we won close recruiting battles for, often head to head with OSU, like JJ McCarthy, Donovan Edwards, Blake Corum, Kenneth Grant, and Will Johnson, to name a few.  If we start losing those types of guys to OSU over NIL, I think we'll be on the wrong side of this rivalry again and quickly. It doesn't matter how good the coaching, culture, and identification are by this staff going forward, you still need to compete for the top guys somehow.

Well said. These kids won a…

Well said. These kids won a championship and deserve to be rewarded for it. The fact that other schools are willing to pay more for a lesser result looks...bad. It makes me feel embarassed.

I'm against inducements and…

I'm against inducements and going after the recruits/transfers who only want the biggest paycheck, but we've got to show kids that if they sign with us, we've got a big NIL war chest to support them once they're here. No reason why we couldn't be in the top tier. I can't stand this complacent, arrogant attitude of Michigan as a 'brand' that sells itself, and that players will eventually figure out that it's best for them to sign here if they know what's good for them. We're an institution, like any other in college athletics, who has to figure NIL out in alignment with a set of values (which I acknowledge makes this harder for us than say, Kentucky, Texas A&M, O$U, or whoever).

We're national champions…

We're national champions until proven otherwise, and that still feels good as hell. It'll probably keep me smiling for a long, long time. And I love Sherrone, especially after the Penn State game, so that's some good news.

Go Blue, Ace!

Go Blue, Ace!

Fwiw, it seemed like it…

Fwiw, it seemed like it still had a pretty heavy, old-school Dutch Reformed vibe in the mid-to-late 2010s, which was when I lived in MI. This is mostly, like, in terms of who seemed to have influence...political positions, prominent families and businesses, etc. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that or a town/area being pretty 'white' overall, which I don't think is what he was saying (or what you were insinuating he was saying), anyway. In terms of personal experience, I don't know much of anything about GR besides a couple visits and knowing a bunch of really good folks from out that way. Cool little city, though. MadCap Coffee and Founders are great.

Yeah, good point on Holland…

Yeah, good point on Holland. I had black roommates when I lived in Detroit a few years ago. I told them I was visiting a friend in Holland and asked if they wanted to come with me. They looked at one another, then back at me, and said, "They don't really like us over there." Idk how much they were joking or what, but that did kind of stick with me. Otoh I worked for a black man who was formerly in DEI at a university in Grand Rapids who seemed to miss the area a lot.

My parents half-moved to South Haven in retirement, and that's probably a good choice. It historically has a large black population for a lakeside town and still does. There's neighborhoods with black businesses, parks, churches, etc. It's got a lot of other stuff going on, as well. Festivals, beaches, Van Buren State Park, farmer's market, etc. Very walkable, too.

+1 for Holland. Awesome town…

+1 for Holland. Awesome town, fantastic beaches. But must be at least as expensive as Ann Arbor, no?

Oh, Luddington is beautiful…

Oh, Luddington is beautiful. The state park there is great for car camping, as well. Never been there in the snow, though! I've only been in the fall, but it felt a lot sleepier/quieter than the towns around Grand Rapids.

The Lake Huron side/The…

The Lake Huron side/The Thumb can be pretty rough with towns like Bay City and Saginaw. In general, the beaches/lakefront aren't as nice or upscale as the West side of the state. Not to say there aren't lovely bits--like Oscoda is really nice, for example. It's just a lot more rural/rustic and harder to get to. Don't expect Saugatuck or Leland over there. A lot of those West Michigan towns and beaches are as much vacation destinations and second homes for Chicagoans as anything else. Lots of wealth and investment over there, whereas the East side isn't really tied to any big metropolitan area. The nicer side of Huron is actually in Canada, like at the Pinery...sort of like how the nicer side of Lake Michigan is in Michigan and not Wisconsin. That has something to do with weather, as well, but I don't remember why anymore. Best of luck to you and your family! There's lots of lovely towns around Michigan, esp around Ann Arbor and out west. I'm sure you'll find something! Have a look at South Haven. I think it was pretty affordable a few years back, and the town and beaches are nice there.

Edit: I'm commenting a lot on this topic, lol! I moved away a little over 2 years ago, and this discussion's making me a little homesick. Idk if I'd move back to Detroit, the metro area, or A2, but Michigan lakes, parks, and their small old towns are just so special. Happy for you and a little jealous, man!

Watching him in the open…

Watching him in the open field is crazy, innit? He's tentative to the line, but if he gets space, he runs with this amazing agressiveness and speed that I don't think I've seen at Michigan in my lifetime. Maybe 2021 Blake Corum comes close.

YEAH! The guy had a tough…

YEAH! The guy had a tough year, but he's still my dude. Glad we'll get to see him go off and be the man in 2024! I remember how heartbreaking it was to see CB's to OSU for him in 2019 and then how absolutely triumphant it was to get him to come home in the end. Really hope he caps off his college career with an All-American type season.

Something about ND in the…

Something about ND in the top tier reeks of a special kind of desperate entitlement.

I'm HOPING Ohio State will…

I'm HOPING Ohio State will be a pushover like they were in 21/22, but idk...what has you convinced they're only worth mild worry? I mean, if we can rush for more than them in the shoe (which we can), it's probably a done deal, but this could be a team w/o JJ and Harbaugh.

'OSU will be our biggest…

'OSU will be our biggest competition for the big ten title.'

The more things change...

Never undertstood how MSU…

Never undertstood how MSU became such a bitter rival. I don't give a shit about them, never have. Maybe it's bc I'm not originally from Michigan, but it feels more like some weird holdover from the calamitous nexus of Dave Brandon/Brady Hoke and Mark Dantonio. We have one rival, and it's Ohio State*. MSU has been good like 8 times in the last 75 years.

*And not 'Ohio'...another weird thing from that era that won't die.

All they have is hate.

All they have is hate.

2003 was excellent and 2006…

2003 was excellent and 2006 was crazy, but the scheme wasn't there to fully make use of the talent. 2016 was fantastic but didn't have the offensive weapons. Obviously 97 was incredible. This team has the weapons and the scheme to get them wins. Is it the greatest? Hell yeah. Nothing's better than this feeling.

He's lights out in a clean…

He's lights out in a clean pocket, but Michigan got to him and made him pay.

Those players and coaches…

Those players and coaches deserve a lot of respect. Ditto for Alabama and even Ohio State this year. All crazy talented and schemed like hell to beat us. But 2023 UofM cannot be beat! Go Blue!

Toughest bastards in college…

Toughest bastards in college football since 2021. I love this team.

Well, damn right! When you see what happened to Penix's QBR under pressure all year wrong, it's like this was bound to happen against Michigan's D. Maybe the network will finally have their come-to-Jesus moment.

Thank you! What a difference…

Thank you! What a difference. The ESPN highlights tell the story that Washington beat themselves despite an unstoppable passing attack. These highlights tell the story that Michigan was more physical and dominant from start to finish, especially on the ground. Hell yes.

YES!!
When Seth, Brian, and…

YES!!

When Seth, Brian, and Alex talked about how Washington's defense misses tackles and puts RB's in space, I thought, DE is going to go off, and this game isn't going to be close. Congrats to him and that O-line, who has to be the most athletic, tough, and disciplined in the nation at run blocking. Some of the pulls made my jaw drop. The whole rushing attack looked as good as 2022: efficient AND explosive.

A lot of peole have been shitting on Donovan all year, calling him a bum, saying all he's ever done is two long runs against Ohio State. This dude is a bad motherfucker. He's a threat to go the distance very play. He had a tough year, but people forget he nearly put up 1000 yards rushing last season, and for a second year in a row, he's been clutch in the biggest game on our schedule.

Yes.

Yes.

Both teams in the B10…

Both teams in the B10 championship look like they're in a different stratosphere from us.  They're playing fast and confident.  They look ready for this game and seem to know the stakes.  They line up and look like they know the play, and their offenses line up with real tempo (especially OSU).  Even on Northwestern, everybody out there is playing fast and flying around.  Why the hell doesn't Michigan ever have this intensity and swagger?

"The administration at Michigan has always had a reputation of not seeking buy-in/input from other campus constituencies."

Nailed it.  This is the institutional arrogance of the university administration, the football team, and beyond.

Welp.  Looks like DPJ is…

Welp.  Looks like DPJ is fast and can run a route.  How in the hell does Michigan have zero big play ability on offense since Denard Robinson?  It's befuddling.  Hell of a play, DPJ!  And Peppers still looks like a beast.  The dude plays hungry.

Don't get me wrong because I…

Don't get me wrong because I'm a big believer in the old time way, but I just think the "old way" can be kind of counterintuitive, especially in schools.  A lot of the old-school values came about culturally because they were useful and truly valuable in the industrial and agricultural world.  Put your head down, work hard, do a good job, come home, and put your family in a position to be successful in that world.  We don't need your ideas or your emotions.  Just get it done.

Now I think it's the opposite.  The modern world thrives on knowledge and creative economy.  Industry has either moved where it's cheaper or been automated, and service jobs that require you to put your head down and work are just awful in terms of pay, benefits, and job quality.  All of a sudden, good/big ideas, creativity, writing, and good emotional and communication skills are pretty essential and valuable if you want a good life and career.

I don't like that we seem to have all gone a little soft and that all we do is sit around and complain on the internet.  I think this creates a sort of learned helplessness, and I really feel for people because it's hard to escape society.  But I'm also not thrilled that so much of education, government, religion, and even the corporate world are still clinging to the old way, pretending that we still have the economy and society of 50 years ago.  It's sad when there's absolutely no interest in adaptation and problem solving and confronting the problems of current times head-on, especially coming from these gritty "old-school" types who claim to value honesty and courage so deeply.  I feel for them, too, but it seems like their cynicism is what's holding success back in a lot of situations, and this is also a kind of learned helplessness.

I think that's what's wrong with Michigan football:  so hung up on the inherent, mythical superiority of Bo (and Carr, to a lesser extent) and the Michigan difference that we are in denial about our real-world performance.  Any adaptation or attempt to get with the times would be an admission that we're wrong, and then we would have nothing.  But the tradeoff there is that you have a program that is in shambles and completely behind the times in every way.  You don't actually apply the values handed down by Bo simply by being stubborn and trying to turn back the clock to when your way won the day.  You have to embrace discomfort and have the courage to confront today's problems and change.  That's Bo.  This is happening with Michigan football, and I see it happen all the time with organizations and small businesses that are passing the torch to a younger generation.  It's like they'd rather fail and blame it on society today or a rigged game so they're protected from acknowledging any hard truths about themselves.  You can fall into that trap no matter what your age, where you come from, or who your coach was 50 years ago.

Anyway, I realize we probably agree about all this, I just wanted to offer my take because that's our society these days, lol!

Personally, I have no…

Personally, I have no problem giving a guy 6-10 years.  Even when Harbaugh was hired, I figured we'd need about 6 years to see what he was...and here we are.

It seems like he knows how to turn a program around: he's done that everywhere he's been, including Michigan, but that's not someone we need anymore.  IMO we need someone who knows how to recruit and motivate (in a way that's suitible to modern college football), and someone who's going to instill identity, pride, and a winning culture in the team.

I think that it takes a long time to see that result.  Despite the NC, even Urban Meyer took about 5-6 years to build that kind of structure and identity at OSU, to the point that even though he's gone, they're still building on what he created.  I don't want the homerun hire--no innovators or gurus or turnaround artists.  I think I want Hafley.  I think he has the chops as a recruiter and motivator to get us where we want to go over the long term.  I would "trust the process" in that situation and want to see it through has a fan.

At this point, it looks like Harbaugh has no idea how to build a program.  Get in and turn a program into an instant success?  Sure.  But create a program of sustained success?  I don't see it.

Also...kelly’s beaten their…

Also...kelly’s beaten their rivals.  Has he lost to USC?  Navy?  And he hasn’t really had to play Michigan year-in-year-out.  I believe he beat one of Hoke’s teams 38-0.  (They also have a weird rivalry situation because they don’t have any conference rivals, and therefore their rivalries don’t have any real stakes.  They’re kind of one-way streets, but that’s besides the point.)

For what it’s worth, my brother is an ND alum, and he says a vocal segment of the fan base thinks Kelly is a mediocre coach, and they should dump him so they can go after Urban Meyer.

I mostly agree, but I would…

I mostly agree, but I would flip Rutgers and MSU.

Why isn’t the roster…

Why isn’t the roster situation a coaching and recruiting failure?

2 of those OSU losses were…

2 of those OSU losses were heartbreaking.  3 were downright painful and humiliating.  It's worse than you make it out to be.  The MSU losses are mostly baffling.

Yeah, absolutely ridiculous…

The amount of shit she's taking is absolutely ridiculous.  She's entitled to her opinion, regardless, but it has to be painful and disappointing to watch this program collapse when your son is sitting out with an injury and the team is losing many games it should win.  And it's pretty whack that Milton has progressed absolutely zero since high school despite having the best work ethic on the team.  Idk how these guys could trust the coaches anymore, and they probably do feel set up to fail at this point.

And as for my high school football program...I'm pretty sure nobody had more insider info than the moms, lol.  I'm sure she knows something about the state of the locker room, at least, or how the guys in Milton's camp feel.
