Jett Howard to NBA Comment Count

Seth March 23rd, 2023 at 6:10 PM

It won't be among the greatest careers by the Howard family at Michigan, but it's also hard to argue it's not the best thing for him. After one season of playing for Dad, Jett Howard is off to play for a paycheck.

Jett's single season in Ann Arbor demonstrated the kind of rising outside shot that the NBA covets. By midseason, his scoring ability had draft observers talking about a lottery pick, which is an opportunity few could pass up. But as the season went along, and as it became harder not to notice Michigan often looked better in games Jett missed—including the NIT run, apparently by choice—than those he played in, that draft stock started slipping. Dogged by questions about his focus, effort, and most of all defense—none of these plagues exactly rare among true freshmen—there was some hope he might help his dad out by coming back to develop his skills.

Unfortunately for Michigan, those aspects of his game are relatively less important to the NBA than scoring. And there's no doubt that Jett did plenty of it, with a smooth as silk jumper he could unleash from virtually anywhere. That alone makes Howard a better prospect right now than last year's early entries Moussa Diabate and Caleb Houstan. He can also point at injuries to either ankle that slowed down his production in the second half. It's hard to imagine a mid-round NBA team would pass up that all-important size, shooting, and athletic upside, or fear a few years of development in the G-League. Neither do I fault Jett for passing up a chance to do his pops and us a solid so he can start earning his own money from the skills he's been developing for longer than Juwan has been coaching.

What's good for Jett unfortunately sucks for Michigan. It's one thing to grit through a true freshman's growing pains, especially if he's offsetting them by filling the bucket. It's another to make it to the other end of those growing pains with nothing to show for it. And then have it happen the next year. Just as they did with Houstan last year, Michigan spent a season experiencing up a talented young wing, and there will be no payoff year to follow.

They still await word from Hunter Dickinson and Kobe Bufkin. The former seems likelier to return given the NIL potential at Michigan is probably better than what awaits in his pro career. The latter played himself into a potential first rounder before a practice injury knocked Kobe out of the NIT. Bufkin could leave as well to get a jump toward his second NBA contract, or he could stick around and hope to Jaden Ivey his way into the Lottery. Both options seem equally good for him. It would be nice for Michigan if they didn't have to replace yet another lead guard, especially since next-year Bufkin projects to an even bigger game-changer than next-year Howard.

Either way, expect Juwan to be shopping for wings in the portal. Wofford PF BJ Mack is a likely candidate to fill last season's sore four-spot. Even if they can get another year for Joey Baker and see good things in the development of Youssef Khayat, they're now in the market for a three as well.

There is no content after the jump. If you're going to comment, please keep the decisions being made in mind.

I'd honestly rather a player give minutes to someone who wants to stick around than someone who bolts in one year... The guy is set for life and took valuable development minutes from someone else who needs it.

No crying here. I am glad Juwan & Jett got to spend a season together as Dad & son. Jett probably has a great future where an NBA team needs offense & has a scheme that gets him open for shots. Defense optional. Michigan needs players who come to grind it out & excel as defenders & scorers. Slashers, 3 point drainers, & in your face defenders.

Bile?  What is wrong with bile?  I will direct my ire towards the group responsible.  The problem is NBA directors of personnel.  The NBA raised the draft age not because individuals were not physically ready, but to avoid the Kwame Brown debacle.  A year in college in theory would give the NBA better scouting on players so they would not waste a number one pick on a stinker.

My retort is what is the point of waiting a year if NBA GM's are still completely enamored with potential over a finished product?  Anyone watching last year's game against Villanova game would have concluded that Diabate and Houstan were not remotely ready for the NBA.  How can they stay in the NBA when the team was better off with Brandon Johns and Terrance Williams at the forwards at least in that game?  Whatever potential they had was esoteric and fleeting.  No wonder why there are so many crummy franchises in the NBA.  Many seem to be incapable of evaluating basketball talent or be stuck in the FOMO rut.

What does this mean for Michigan going forward?  As long as the NBA is in the FOMO realm, I would not even consider anyone with NBA potential unless it is a finished product to be the cherry on the sunday.  I would go after every undersized guard, every tweener, and every big man who is active but who has no perimeter game.  But not too much hops.  Else, the FOMO guys come looking.  If you want to win in college, you want Joey Hauser, not Jett Howard.

I often wonder if Juwan called sets for Jett, even if it wasn't the best option, to showcase his abilities knowing he was out after this year....in any case, I wish Jett luck and thank him for his time in maize and blue.

I agree with some of your points but I prefer to take the high road on whether or not to bash a young man for representing and sweating for a school....there are better ways to use my energy. However I am comfortable to say when a coach and his skillset are not working based on seeing things with my own two eyes on how the team operates through games.

FWIW - Didn’t attempt or need to bash Jett. He seems like a nice young emerging adult who enjoyed playing offense & shooting 3 point shots. I did not see much evidence that he had the grit & grind to play the defensive side of the game. Also did not rebound with intensity & fire. Did not show early signs of being the guy to go to during winning time when you needed that clutch bucket. Maybe that will come with age, training & experience in the NBA. The again maybe not. I have my doubts about his grit & grind potential.

This is where I’m at. I don’t wish any ill will on one-and-dones, I just don’t care about them one way or the other. I’m going to reserve my enthusiasm for players who display a loyalty to and love for Michigan that extends beyond staying just long enough to burnish their credentials for the pros. I’ve felt this way about the hockey program for years.

No college athlete has a moral obligation to stay in school just to please fans like me—it’s their life and careers they have to look after—but fans aren’t obligated to care about them, either.

Howard leaving for the NBA without ever becoming anything than an erratic but sometimes decent college player, and the fact that despite that, he’ll likely be drafted in the upper half of Round 1, highlights perfectly a huge reason why neither the college or NBA games are as good or entertaining as they used to be.

Was always a 1 and done, and played like he knew it. Ain't his fault the system makes him spend a year wasting time (for him) before hitting the pros, he wasn't fully invested (hence his worst aspects being the areas where hustle can make up for a lot) and I can't say I'd have been different when I was that young if I'd have grown up like him.

Hope Buf comes back.

Unfortunately I'm not betting on Jett having a successful career unless he learns to play defense, rebound and handle the ball. I didn't see big improvement in those areas this year, and if he didn't improve much next year in college, maybe he wouldn't have helped Michigan much.  Maybe some time in the G League will help him.  This is a player who might have improved more under Beilein than he did under his dad, because Beilein emphasized the basics more.

So be it. His leaving was presumed for so long that I'd have been shocked it he'd stayed.

Next year will be pivotal for both Jett and Juwan. For the son, it will be time to see if he actually has the goods to play with the big boys. For the father, the chance to show if he can right the ship coming off a bitterly disappointing season.

As the Zen master said, "We'll see."

So much whining about the state of college basketball in this thread because fans don't emotionally connect with players who only play a year or two. Wish we could go back to the good old days when we got to connect with players who played a whole two or three years instead. Really felt like a family!

I can't understand why we must tiptoe around the obvious?  Jett (and all players) are entitled to make decisions about their careers just like the rest of us. Are we not able to be critical of those decisions?  And if not, why? Are we afraid of offending the fragile ego of the next high usage, self absorbed, no-defense, diva who doesn't really give a crap about team results as long as he gets his, because he might take his inflated self-worth to Memphis or Auburn or Grand Canyon?  So we can give their roster spot to someone who cares and might stick around 2 or 3 years?  It's not like we will miss his defense, hustle, ball distribution, or rebounding.

Please. These are grown men making big-boy decisions. If they are so fragile that they spend their time looking at the MGoBlog message board, I, for one, won't miss them.

It kinda seemed to me that Jett was playing for the draft, not the team..... or maybe it was just a freshman playing like a freshman.

Its disappointing that his time in A2 wasn't part of a team making a run in the B1G Tourney and March Madness as well.

Wish him all the best in the NBA.

Regarding the frustration with one-and-dones, I think one promising approach is to recruit the type of guys who will be good college players, but have a flaw when it comes to their NBA potential. Hunter Dickinson and Dug McDaniel are too good examples. Dickinson can be dominant in college but may not be enough of a plus athlete to be more than a role player in the NBA, and McDaniel has a lot of awesome traits but will always be 5'11". Zavier Simpson and Jordan Morgan are good examples from years past. Those guys can end up being more valuable than higher-ranked recruits like Houstan, Diabate, and Jett, because you get their upperclassman seasons too.

I am going to speculate on the meta question that I believe has impact.  The NBA values possibility not certainty which is the opposite of the rest of the world.  An individual has more value if he is younger, and his skill set has not been defined yet.  The strange reasoning of NBA GM's is that a player "COULD" have that ceiling.  This encourages players to declare early because if their value as a PRO is defined, their value is decreased.  The NBA literally values the two birds in the bush verses the bird in hand.

This means that fewer players make the decision of Franz Wagner who played himself into a higher pick by remaining another year.  Using math terms, I set the variables C equals ceiling and F equals' floor.  C is greater than F.   A player's real value is X.  A players perceived value in year one is between F and C.  NBA execs are inclined to say X equals C.  If a player waits a year, they fear that X will become known and most likely not equal C but be some value less than C.  Why bother proving you are close to C, if the NBA execs are making that conclusion anyway?  The worst thing you could do is for them to discover the real value of X.

Franz Wagner ultimately made a mistake in that a FOMO exec would have picked him high anyway.  I dispute this logic because I believe people who stay like Franz Wagner learn how to be leaders by being the alphas of a team verses having to be a sidekick and traveling 50 days a year.

Crawford and Poole were different than Jett Howard in that they were alpha dogs.  They were the focal point of a college offense and for better or worse were willing to take the shot.  In fact there is still friction in GS because Poole is still taking shots his coaches/peers would rather he not.

The meta problem with Jett Howard is that he has never been an alpha dog.  He was third fiddle on a HS team.  In college he acted like a sidekick not a leader.  Jett has never had to be the leader.  Now he is going to go to the NBA and be a sidekick again.  Unlike Franz Wagner, I believe Jett Howards development will be delayed because he does not have this experience.  This is the one thing college can do.  It can put a player in a position where something matters and they have to try to seize it.  Thats priceless.

Knew from the first few times watching him he was likely a one and doner. Oozes with offensive talent and NBA loves to draft potential and sometime staying to long and having them dissect your game costs you money. I can't even be mad or disappointed figured this was a thing that was bound to happen.  Jett had to much on ball responsibility this year with our PG situation. He was called on way to much to initiate offense for the team. In the league he will be a shooter however if he hopes to stick he's going to have to be able to defend a lot better then he has shown this season or be able to handle the initiation of offensive flow for team. I'll predict he has a long NBA career and may even reach All Star level at some point.

If Bufkin goes Juwann seat is going to get hot.... I don't see how we are a tourney team without Howard or Kobe. If Kobe and Dickinson return, Dug continues to improve and we land a wing or solid 4 out of portal I see the path won't be easy!

Can Michigan please stop chasing 5 stars?  I don't care if they are related to you.  I don't care if other schools make it work.  I've thought for many years that one and dones are massive risks.  Chances are they will leave before they really contribute anything to the program.

Michigan's program has been decimated in the last two years because of three one and dones that have done little to help the program, and then bolted.  Good for them for getting paid, but it's hurt the program severely.  Send the 5 stars to Kentucky and go for solid 4 stars if you can.  By the time they are sophomores or juniors they will be as good as a five star, and will actually help the program in the meantime.
