Oh, as soon as his name was…

Oh, as soon as his name was mentioned the crowd gave a pretty thunderous response. But the exchange was so quick that I and the crew I was with didn’t actually know he was there. We walked out of the stadium thinking he was a no show and that Klatt just handed it over.

And since Zak was on the receiving end the booing transitioned quickly. I imagine that was planned.

Tony is on borrowed time, I think.

Got it. Verizon is…

Got it. Verizon is struggling in Indy today, but buddy with AT&T hot spot saved the day. Also allowed me to push in on Corum any time. Lfg.

I’d do it for you, but link…

I’d do it for you, but link isn’t working. May not be the link… also haven’t been able to hit a single online sports book in the last three hours. Too many degens flooding the city at once.

Go Blue!

I posted this last year and…

I posted this last year and think people found it useful. Not a lot has changed in old Indy in a year, so I'll repost with some minor updates. Have fun, and Go Blue!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Been an Indy resident for over a decade and been to every Big Ten Championship since it started save one where I was horrendously sick. I go annually with three pals, all chill OSU fans. If you spot a Wolverine with 3 Buckeyes, say "hi".

Anyway, since I'm local, here's my advice:

Booze

  • We don't have an open container law. Enjoy.
  • Yardhouse, District Tap, and Kilroy's are good bar options for the day. The best show in town (Scotty's) closed during covid. The Yardhouse bathroom situation remains woefully inadequate, so brace for that. The Slippery Noodle is "historic" and so are most of its patrons on a normal night. The local alumni club meets at O'Reilly's Irish Pub, but it isn't high on my list.
  • If you're looking for a brewery rather than just a bar, the following are downtown and worthwhile: Upland, Chilly Water, Taxman, Metazoa. People like Sun King, but eh, drink the Wee Mac if that is where you go.
  • If your stay was going to be longer you should also hit Bier, Black Acre, and Daredevil, which are not downtown. But you're not staying longer, so that's irrelevant.
  • No matter where you drink, go early.

Food

  • St. Elmo's is good but hella expensive. If you go, get the shrimp cocktail because that's the thing. You'll like the navy bean soup. But seriously, if you want steak just go to Prime 47, Capital Grille, Harry & Izzy's (owned by the St. Elmo's people), or even just Weber Grill.
  • If you're not after steak specifically, the best concentration of good food is on Mass Ave: The Eagle (fried chicken), Bakersfield (Mexican), Mimi Blue (meatballs), Bru Burger (burgers, obviously), Bazbeaux (pizza), Rathskeller (German food, German beer). This is a bit of a hike to Lucas Oil, so plan ahead.
  • After Mass Ave, I'd recommend Fountain Square: Revolucion (Mexican), Bluebeard (hipster farm-to-table sort of fare), Siam Square (Thai), and Upland (brewpub). Fountain Square is an even longer hike to Lucas Oil than Mass Ave, so probably best if you are looking for food earlier in the day with time to migrate.
  • Maxine's Chicken & Waffles is delicious and would make a good base layer. If you need breakfast Sunday, Cafe Patachou.

Area/Logistics

  • They close down Georgia Street and turn it into a block party for big events like this. Assume they'll do that this weekend. Free and fun atmosphere.
  • Skip the NCAA Hall of whatever. Or since we're here in 2023, maybe bring a sign and protest?
  • If you're driving you really don't need to stress too much. The city hosts a lot of events and you'll find something reasonably walkable.
  • Speaking of walking... if you're staying downtown, there's a decent chance your hotel is connected via skywalk to the convention center and Circle Centre Mall. This is true for the Marriott properties (including the JW, Courtyard, "Marriott", and Westin), Hyatt, Conrad, and Omni. This is a good trick if it is cold out.
  • The airport is easy, so don't worry about budgeting extra time on your way out. The airlines say to show up an hour before, and that's sufficient. Doubly true if you're rocking TSA Pre.
Already ahead after week 0!…

Already ahead after week 0! 2-1

What, no week 0?…

What, no week 0? Jacksonville State wins over UTEP (currently +100 ML), Vanderbilt covers (-17.5), and FIU keeps it closer than +11.5. Book it.

I can tell that you and I…

Responding emotionally to others’ words is a choice. If you spend your whole life pursuing the approval of others you will likely miss out on things that actually make you happy.

Yea, I usually find it’s…

Yea, I usually find it’s better to wait until a second or third assault before imposing any real consequences. It’s in everyone’s best interest.

Once you’ve distilled vodka…

Once you’ve distilled vodka a couple of times, as long as you’re cutting it appropriately, you’re going to get a substantially similar product.

There have been analyses of the vodka brands for purity. After reading one such analysis years ago I’ve only ever bought Svedka (and the occasional bottle of Zubrowka). In the case of Svedka, it is inexpensive, scored well in the aforementioned analysis, and tastes fine. Unless you’re in Eastern Europe you’re mixing it anyway. Buying Grey Goose or whatever is popular is just throwing money away.

The NCAA are fools if they…

The NCAA are fools if they bring the hammer down on negligible infractions that are self reported. The logical consequence is that no one will self report if there is no leniency for doing so. At that point the only fools would be those still self reporting.

And this is where I grit my teeth and hope that neither the NCAA nor my school’s administration are fools…

Well, the Michigan parlay…

Well, the Michigan parlay was lousy, but who saw THAT coming. I generally don’t bet on Michigan because I’m biased, and my record of Michigan bets reflects that.

Disappointing outcome, but the guys fought hard til the end. Often victors, always valiant.

Honestly a terrific season…

Honestly a terrific season. Love the fight that the team showed in the second half. It was ugly, but this team doesn’t have quit in them.

Thanks for everything, 143! Good luck to those moving on in their journeys, and see you next year to everyone else!

I’m disappointed, as I’m…

I’m disappointed, as I’m sure everyone else is.

But I’d like to congratulate the team on an awesome year. Undefeated in the regular season, Big Ten Champs, beat Ohio, and made it to the CFP. Heads high! On to 2023!

Congrats on the under! Haha…

Congrats on the under! Haha. Absurd game, and I’ll take it!

Iowa under back on track!

Iowa under back on track!

Snagged that Michigan parlay at +500. Player props are pretty dicey, but can be fun to watch (or not at all when an undisclosed injury keeps someone out of the entire game). The little 2 pick that is now half complete was at +179.

And I snagged Alabama ML when they were down 10-0 at even odds. Wish I’d bet my house!

Thanks for posting these!…

Thanks for posting these! Always fun to see how I line up with your thoughts. This week, we are pretty sync’ed up.

I have:

  • Bama covering (even got ‘em way back at -5.5)
  • Georgia covering (at -6.5, go Dawgs)
  • Iowa - Kentucky under mostly to make that game bearable to watch
  • A couple of fun parlays  including this one: a Donovan any time TD, JJ rushing 14+, total under 62.5, Michigan -2.5, and Quentin Johnston receiving over 54.5. #degensparlayprops
  • And this one: Bama first half winner, Michigan-TCU first half under

I’m up on the season, but not over the last week, so tail with caution.

Easy fix. Download…

Easy fix. Download DraftKings or FanDuel and put a few bucks down. Suddenly you’ll find yourself intensely interested in Western Kentucky blowing out South Alabama at 1am because you need WKU’s top receiver to gain a few more yards receiving before garbage time.

Or so I’m told.

What does it say about our…

What does it say about our fan base that I briefly contemplated doing this analysis myself and then decided, “nah, someone else is probably going to tackle this anyway.” I wonder how many readers had the same train of thought.

Fun analysis overall! Thanks!

Sun King has its following,…

Sun King has its following, as evidenced by the volume they produce. That said, I’d rank them outside of my top ten in Indy. My opinion is partially colored by my view of their Sunlight Cream Ale, one of their most popular for some reason, for which my tasting notes include, “hairspray”. But the joy of the last couple of decades in breweries is that there’s enough variety for everyone!

Duckpin is definitely fun. For a quirky afternoon you should hit them up and afterward go across the street to New Day Meadery. Mead has a reputation for being either cloyingly sweet or rocket fuel, but the honey wines at New Day are nicely balanced. They do flights and you’d be hard pressed to find a bad example. It’s also super local - founded by a husband and wife duo. I haven’t been in for a while, but the owners used to work the counter pretty regularly. No tvs at New Day and not really a game day sort of vibe though, so know what you’re getting into if you decide to check them out.

Booze

  • We don't have an open container law. Enjoy.
  • For bars, the best pre-game venue was Scotty's, which closed during the height of covid under new (and inept) management. Kilroy's and District Tap are going to be good options now. Yardhouse is another good pick, but doesn't have an adequate restroom situation for the size of venue, so be warned. The Slippery Noodle is "historic" and so are most of its patrons on a normal night. The local alumni club meets at O'Reilly's Irish Pub, but it isn't high on my list.

Nojima Rise

I will be traveling to Japan for the middle two weeks of October.  Any tips for a Michigan fan with an interested in seeing the Nojima Rise, Carcajou?  I plan to be available the weekends of the 15th and 22nd.

Pipkins impersonation lives on...
