Yeah but Alabama’s defense had to face the high scoring SEC for most of their games. While ND faced the puds of the ACC and MSU’s D got to save face with games like Rutgers and Maryland.
You put either of those 2 teams in the SEC and I guarantee their defenses end up being ranked much lower than they are.

Bama could be playing the North Dakota School of Mines and Performing Arts in a bowl game in Alaska, and Saban would still be determined to go and win it 63-0.
There’s not a chance in hell Saban’s not relishing the opportunity to destroy a guy who some still claim is his near equal in the coaching community, and who gets paid almost as as he does, despite not having 1/1,000th the accomplishments.
Yeah I’m totally confident that Michigan is going to be able to make up for Alabama’s superior talent and athleticism by having Jim Harbaugh out coach the man who is the greatest college football coach in history.
But if a 2 loss Bama team, who will no doubt be disappointed to be playing in the Citrus Bowl and unlikely to be fired up to give maximum effort and intensity, still comes out and blows our doors off, I will be extremely concerned about the future of the program.
So what happens if Bama in a “down year” absolutely blows us off the goddamned field?
Do we all just sit around and go “Well our expectations are just too damn high anyway. We can’t realistically be expected to compete with a program like Bama, even when they’re having an off year. Let’s just be happy with our 9 wins and savor the fact that we’ve put MSU back in its place.”
This is why I always thought Larry Bird was smart as hell when he took the Pacers coaching job. He knew they were a group of good/great players who were solid professionals like Reggie Miller, Rik Smits, Mark Jackson, Chris Mullin, Jalen Rose and Sam Perkins and he wasn’t going to have to do a lot of ego managing and motivating to get them to play winning ball.
A group like that would have been an ideal fit for JB.
