Woj: “Beilein wants an experienced NBA staff”

Seems to maybe calm some of the nerves about Beilein taking some Michigan assistants with him
2 good threads in a row, let's keep it going friends, can we go for three??
To be fair, this is actually a useful post. This is a relevant tweet from a reputable source regarding Michigan's coaching staff.
Complete speculation from 'Thunder Wire' and 'Coaching Changes' on the other hand...
News doesn't have to be true, it just has to be EXCITING
This is just too surreal.
I hope Beilein does great there but I can't watch a second of it. I'll get too sad.
I cry.
Were we really that excited to watch coach B get next year's to to overachieve and maaaybe get back to the sweet 16? Personally if this is a rebuilding year I'm not too sad to see coach go. Going to the Cavs is a head scratcher. But let's be honest. Belein is approaching 70 and his highest ranked recruit ever was Mcgary. 6 years ago. 2 final four appearances have raised the bar for our program but I can't squint hard enough to see us clearing it without better players.
Beilein has always been one to surround himself with people that complement his weaknesses. No surprise here.
Rumor is he’s actually bringing Juwan Howard on with him. Howard interviewed with the Cavs too I believe.
And Billy Donlon and Brad Stephens.
This is suddenly a bad feelings thread now!
(not actual news)
He needs someone to coach the defense. The #HardHedge has not been successful in the NBA
You don't coach defense in the NBA, that's why he left UM.
You don’t *play* defense in the NBA, that’s why he left UM.
FTFY
The 'no one plays defense in the NBA' is something everyone likes to say because it sounds dismissively snarky but isn't factually true.
You are correct! Someone likes to play defense in the NBA, I even saw it once.
Unless UM wants to hire Yaklich or Washington, we should operate under the assumption that they will be coaching at other destinations next season. It’s pretty rare for a new HC to come in and retain assistant coaches from the previous regime.
This is true. You can venture to guess that both of those two are going to be poached by another school. The safest hire Michigan can make is either one of these two, but safe isn't good enough in the Big 10 recruiting wars. Michigan will try to go big here. Sorry to say, Yaklick/Washington are most likely gone as well.
This in itself makes me want them to bump Yak and throw gobs of money at Saddi that much more. Fuck it, give the keys to Yak, pay Saddi and absurd amount of assistant money, and bring in Pat Beilein.
Don’t care. Shouldn’t this be OT?
This makes perfect sense. Beilein is smart and he knows he needs to hire to his weaknesses--he needs NBA experience on his staff.
Hiring favorite college guys is the sort of thing you see Steve Spurrier and Chip Kelly do. You know, guys who were seen as geniuses but failed to recognize how much they needed to learn at the next level. Beilein's not going to make that mistake.
As opposed to an inexperienced staff that is known to be well coveted.
I mean, it sounds like Beilein being Beilein - hire experience where you know you're not as proficient. That's the move of a seasoned, wise coach at any level, as we all knew Beilein was.
Do I care what beilein does with the cavs?.
NO
Thanks for your time at M, Coach B.
Ok, but do I care what beilein does with the cavs?
SURE WHY NOT
Thanks for your time at M, Coach B.
Reporters need twitter editors. Jesus FK. Okay, fine, talking with Bernie Bickerstaff is newsy ... but telling us he "wants an experienced staff?" Oh really? He doesn't want to be surrounded by people completely new to the NBA? Nobody in any senior leadership position EVER in the history of the frickin world wanted to surrounded themselves with newbs. Those who did ... well, history forget them for a reason. Thanks Woj.
He should hire Greg Mattison
Makes sense, and shows a guy who understands he'll need help to succeed.
I do think that if UM doesn't hire a guy internally, one or both of the major assistant coaches will be gone. I just don't see a guy coming in from the outside and sticking with two holdovers unless they absolutely blow him away or address an area where he's a bit weak (i.e. an offense-first coach taking over and Yaklich hanging on).
Who is JB Bickerstaff?
Bernie's son?
I knew the Cavs roster was bad but after looking at the entire roster ohhhh boy is Beilein in trouble
Osman, JR Smith, Love, and Sexton are their best players. Beilein will be reunited with Stauskas so maybe he can get him on the right track
Beilein will definitely need all the help he can get
Sure Beilein wants an experienced staff. He's not going to get it with the Cavs...
