I feel like I get this barely perceptible glimpse of "speed in space" for a play or two, but then that play is either called back or it stands and then we go back to being a slightly modified turtle, if you will.
September 21st, 2019 at 10:54 PM ^
Or if it ever results in an incompletion or broken play, we just decide to burn the series and play to punt.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:15 PM ^
Dreadful. OL was inexplicably a sieve. Shea was chucking it into trouble. Dylan has passing issues. Turner ran hard, but definitely need Charbonnet at full force.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:45 PM ^
Yeah, it isn't just that Shea was chucking it into trouble... but the fact that Dylan has shown no noticeable difference passing seems to indicate Gattis just doesn't have a well-designed plan.
I'll revise if Brian sees something different since he watches this stuff intently and often I base my opinion on his, but watching it live it just felt like JV play calls and wishful thinking.
September 21st, 2019 at 5:17 PM ^
Brian has never played or coached a god damn down of football in his life.
September 21st, 2019 at 5:22 PM ^
I’d let him call a few possessions at this point.
September 21st, 2019 at 6:20 PM ^
Be that as it may, by the time he posts he will have watched the film many times more and intently than I have, will, or care to. Hence my trust in his opinion.

"Brian has never played or coached a god damn down of football in his life."
Dude, you don't have to have the black plague to diagnose it when you see it.
September 21st, 2019 at 7:24 PM ^
Ha! Maybe that's what "Speed in Space" refers to. D-linemen running like Usain Bolt at our QBs.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:17 PM ^
You look at LSU and their new offense and you say to yourself, "why can't we execute like that"? Well we don't have Joey Burrow for one thing. Shea Patterson looked more comfortable in last years offense then he does in this one. He's shook no question. Stay with Dylan if he's healthy at least he looks like he gets this offense.
The OL needs to help out their QB whoever that is. The blocking has been poor at best and a lot of turnover can do that to you. Not having Runyon and Stueber has hurt more then I would have thought. I like Hayes better at pass pro then Mayfield, he gets lost on his protections too easy. And what the hell is going on with Ruiz? Did they change their pass pro concepts that much with the new O? I doubt it. Stay with Dylan, cut out the turnovers and penalties and you can get some things going with your play makers this offense could actually be lethal to someone other than themselves.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:25 PM ^
The difference is that Burrow was coached by a competent staff before arriving at LSU. Shea wasn't at Ole Miss, and he clearly hasn't been since getting to Ann Arbor.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:18 PM ^
So year 5 and Harbs still has no QB or OL
September 21st, 2019 at 10:57 PM ^
Depth is weird. I didn't expect it in year 3. Or even year 4, necessarily...but we were better at QB and OL in 15 and 16.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:21 PM ^
I’m not sure that we have an “offense”. This thread should be merged with the defense snowflakes thread.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:23 PM ^
Michigan may be a good school. But it’s dumb at football.
Fifth year and we’ve yet to see a stud QB under this purported geniu$$$. All hype.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:31 PM ^
It’s odd because so many Michigan fans see what the offense should be, and it’s bizarre that we didn’t see it until the fourth quarter. I mean, nico is a walking mismatch, and black and dpj will end up getting at least an nfl look. The offense needs to be a passing spread that relies on those three guys to move the football.
Patterson is almost unplayable. He’s routinely missing receivers running open, and he is really struggling to find guys on the initial read, which makes a struggling offensive line look worse.
September 21st, 2019 at 5:16 PM ^
One big caveat: Those 50/50 balls would probably not have been so successful if both Wisconsin safeties weren't kicked out of the game.
I was thinking the same thing - we were so successful just hucking it up there - until I remembered Wisconsin was down 2 safeties. Some of those could have ended up interceptions.
Couldn't have been any worse than what we did the first 2 1/2 quarters, that's for sure.
September 21st, 2019 at 6:13 PM ^
Then he ought to be clearly instructed to throwing 50/50 balls into single coverage only.
(If he could read defenses).
September 22nd, 2019 at 11:09 AM ^
I'll tell ya. I don't mind if a long INT happens now and again...because it's like a punt. But if me I'd be attacking deep three plays out of four, until he other team breaks down then gash with a pitch screen.
September 21st, 2019 at 10:59 PM ^
I think you force the defense to play more aggressively if you play aggressive offense. Sometimes it will backfire with broken up passes and interceptions, but they will also pay for it with holding, pass interference, targeting, etc.

Patterson is too small and his arm is too weak to make the most of the pro-style receiving core. The announcers were right. Harbaugh has no identity in year 5 because he can’t decide what he wants to be. Peters would have likely been hitting these guys more consistently... hate to say it. Patterson also isn’t producing a run threat so it’s just a Ferrari with a flat tire right now.
September 21st, 2019 at 11:00 PM ^
Dude is 6'2" and plays so much smaller.
September 21st, 2019 at 11:29 PM ^
I stood next to Patterson for 45 min in the spring, If he is 6'2" than I am 6'0 tall and I'm not. I'm 5'10" and his eyes were barely above mine. he might be 6'2" in cleats on concrete

Harbaugh confirmed that McCaffrey has a concussion. Also not good that it was almost two hits to the head in a row
September 21st, 2019 at 4:29 PM ^
Yeah, that's just a brutal loss....at a time when it's clearly the moment to hand the offense over to him, he's now out for some time likely.....
September 21st, 2019 at 4:35 PM ^
in that limited time, it seems obvious to me that the offense clicks better with dylan at QB because of his threat to run. i think he also sees over the D much better than patterson. that said, he has to be coached up better to protect himself. already in his limited play, he has taken several big hits.
September 21st, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
McCaffrey is a really good runner, but he hasn't yet shown an ability to pass accurately.
Also, either he has terrible luck, he's injury prone, or he's just really bad at ducking - maybe a combination of all three.
Seems every time he runs he gets destroyed. That second shot he took was brutal. Feel for him.
September 21st, 2019 at 5:27 PM ^
He's so tall he's getting exposed even when sliding.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:43 PM ^
We ran the ball for 40 yards. Pathetic.

Here is a good example of how bad Shea is at finding the open receiver. It doesn't get much worse than this.
As fans its hard for us to always see what Shea is looking at but we know for sure there was also at least 1 other instance where Shea missed an easy TD pass which was when Nico was WIDE OPEN down the field but Shea still threw a bad pass to Ronnie Bell who dropped it. Supposedly Nico was pissed. So that's TWO touchdowns off the board that we could've had if Shea wasn't bad at finding open guys

Yikes! What happened to the whole Shae doing Shae things at practice we kept hearing about?
September 21st, 2019 at 5:12 PM ^
Maybe Shea being Shea is the same as Manny being Manny.
September 21st, 2019 at 6:19 PM ^
It's clear that all preseason banter is propaganda bullshit.
Shea had control of the offense, Sainristil was the real deal (forgot he was on the team), the offense looks good, etc.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:50 PM ^
He’s terrible. He shouldn’t play again. Mentally he’s not a d1 qb and misses the key throws.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
Our quarterbacks aren't going to make it to the ND game. Both will be out for season at this rate.
September 21st, 2019 at 11:03 PM ^
Gonna be seeing Cade McNamara before long. Maybe he's the true qb of the future.
September 21st, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
I'm amazed how low Shea's ceiling appears to be. I kept waiting, waiting...waiting for him to 'settle in' or something. But I think it's painfully apparent now that Shea isn't that good and his ceiling is a scrambling QB who can be somewhat accurate under 15 yards. And that's his ceiling. He looks lost most of the time back there

JOK 2.0

First off, I love your Hotel, but, we must not truly remember JOK, he was literally Threet 2.0
September 21st, 2019 at 4:53 PM ^
I'm mildly intoxicated, so please forgive any minor deviations in stats, but we had 19 carries, excluding quarterbacks we had 13 rushes on offense, all told for 40 total yards at 2.1 yards per carry. Wisconsin predictably had more, and was running out the clock, but ran 55 times for 361 yards. Noteworthy their third string rusher equaled our total rushing, and their 4th leading rusher outgained our leading rusher. Our 3 QBs threw 42 times for 259 yards, their qb threw 16 times for 128. We outrecruited them in every way, every year, but they absolutely did more with those recruits than we did today.

Gattis is Rich Rod v2 Bad
Harbaugh is officially on the hot seat.
September 21st, 2019 at 5:05 PM ^
Shea should be benched. Watching the Ohio game now, Fields is already far better as a true sophomore in his 4th game than Shea is as a redshirt senior. SMH

September 21st, 2019 at 5:30 PM ^
All the hype on the offensive line is over. They are shit. They can’t man handle anyone.
I used to love Shea as a QB, but man, something has happened to him mentally. He’s fried beyond belief. I knew the defense would be bad, but the lack of production from the offense is stunning
