Why didn't we take Shea Patterson in 2016?

Submitted by Communist Football on

I'm confused by something. If M was Shea's dream school, and he was excited by his 2016 offer, why didn't he end up here in the first place? Was it that Ole Miss hired his brother? Was it that Harbaugh & staff cooled on him? Wondering if anyone knows.

UPDATE: Some commenters saying "Well of course he was bought by Ole Miss." That may very well be, but I don't assume corruption from a kid that Michigan is reportedly interested in bringing on as a transfer.

So, Shea was the #1 pro QB and Peters #3 according to 247. My guess is the staff liked Peters > Shea and if Shea ended up at Ole Miss, maybe something shady happened or maybe he saw all of the offensive weapons they were hiring and decided to sign there? Would love to know the actual story from recruitniks

I'm going to try to put this delicately, based on the stuff I heard at the time.

Michigan offered a scholarship but wasn't willing to, um, roll out the red carpet for Patterson like some other schools.

I don't know if Michigan would ONLY be interested if he's eligible in 2018, but that certainly makes things more enticing. Michigan's in sort of a precarious position for 2018 with only one guy who has taken any snaps, and even that guy only had a few games under his belt. I think if his career would extend through 2020, that would certainly be more threatening to Peters, McCaffrey, and the like.

That number of starts among current QBs is very scary. In a very small sample size, peters looked good. Having watched Patterson several times, he looks like he could be a big difference maker for the team. The question I come back to is this, is it worth potentially trading Peters or McCaffrey for Patterson? I think my answer is yes.

Let’s face it. Shea and Brandon are in the same class. Shea started the last three games of his true freshman year, so let’s compare those games with the three full games Peters started. The comparison is not even close ... Shea is raw but very dynamic and then went on to start much of this year before suffering a minor-ish knee injury. He’s got some pretty spectacular plays on his highlight reel. Peters on the other hand has played pretty good but has comparatively had training wheels on. Patterson’s running ability negates some of our OL woes, and I’d be excited about the prospect of having Perry, Black and DPJ as downfield options for this guy. We would also probably move toward an offense that highlights a dual-threat QB a bit more, which would transition nicely to McCaffrey. I see this as a move to get a Speight replacement, and then we’ll see how it all shakes out. Peters may be the odd man out.

Harbaugh is interested in either scenario. Michigan would have taken him at the time if they would have been a serious contender for him. They weren't. But they were for other IMG players as well the schools playing them (obviously).

I agree with you though. If he is eligible, it becomes much more likely that he ends up here as opposed to sitting. However, I would not be surprised either way because Patterson is probably looking at the shortened college career as one he is going to have to max out in order to end up in a position to be drafted since at this point he would only have his Ole Miss association for the resume so to speak.

Well according to someone on the "Shea Patterson granted permission" thread, Hoke didn't recruit him although Hoke was fired in 2014 lol
