Why all the UM hatred ?

Submitted by jtstag on November 12th, 2023 at 9:19 AM

Unfortunately the media manipulators are still hard at it controlling the talking points.. Most average fans don't look at the details. The see the title of an article and run with it. There was actually an article today that Michigan was too emotional after the win and playing the whoa is me.

i would really like to understand who has such an agenda against JH and such an obvious hatred for UM. Regardless of what they do on the field, that faction's talking points are going to try to diminish any accomplishments. Is hatred/jealousy mostly among fellow big ten coaches ? Has it spread nationally ?If so why ? Is it a psy ops orchestrated by Ryan Day?

Whether its sports or some other topic, these days people don't bother with details. They repeat talking points which eventually makes it true in the public spectrum. All UM can do is keep winning. AND LEAVE THE BIG TEN !! The hatred maybe national. But its definitely  the worst in our own backyard.

What is this leaving the big 10 silliness?  You would really give up our rivalries?  You’d give up our opponents in ALL other sports?  Our academic connections with other schools?

Sure lets play Duke or something instead of Sparty and OSU that will be fun.  Out of spite over a suspension.

I’d love to hear you make this pitch directly to the Regents

Michigan won't be leaving the Big Ten immediately, but it should be planning for a post-Big-Ten era.  Rivalries don't mean squat anymore; it's all about money and the need to win to get paid the big bucks.

Absolutely we should play Texas and Alabama rather than OSU and Sparty.  If UM never plays another game against MSU I will be delighted.

I'd love to hear you pitch your "Michigan should take it in the ass because rivalries" notion to the regents.

Yep.  There is undoubtedly somebody with OSU’s connections behind this whole thing. I doubt it’s as clumsy as Ryan Day’s brother, but somebody funded it, probably at Day’s request. OSU/Columbus has gone a little over the top-see Herbstreit having to move because if overarching fan zealotry.  I lived for a year in Columbus.  It does mean more to them, in an unwholesome way. We have our crazy fans too-look under Stalions, Connor-but we don’t have as many of them.  Those if you who have lived in Columbus know that SE Ohio, in particular, is crazy.  Sad, but time to move on from the rivalry.  Even the police get in on it-ask me about my ticket got going 65 in a 60mph zone.  Not to mention bomb sniffing dogs, fake fire alarms, etc

I’d love to see the MSU rivalry end. It’s become toxic. Also, Michigan’s relationship with the conference will never recover. I also think the spirit of the Michigan/OSU rivalry is gone. It’s turned into something completely different. Efforts to ruin careers. The livelihood of coaches and their families. It’s a mess.

I wouldn't say it is silly.  At this point all options are worthy of consideration and analysis.  The college football world (and all college sports for that matter) is changing.  Rather than sit back and do, you know TRADITION, why not look and choose the best course of action for Michigan?  It could be the ACC, the SEC, the Big 12, a hybrid ACC relationship (like ND),   I don't know.  But what I do know is we have a lot of bright sports, legal and business minds that can look at this and give us rational information on which to assess the pros and cons of the various options.

Leaving the B13 doesn't mean we can't play Ohio or MSU in the future.  M-Ohio could still be like ND-USC.  Michigan State on the other hand could be a sometimes event where we hold the negotiating chips.  Sure we will play you, format is going to be Home, Away, Home.... Neutral refs, proportional revenue sharing.  Same goes for the Brown Jug.

Is some sort of psyop (I'm not sure that's actually the right word but we'll go with it for now) going on? Yes. Is OSU at the root of it? Yes. Is Ryan Day orchestrating it? Absolutely not. He may well have initiated it but he is not running the operation.

The absurdity of that thought is one of their strawman defenses.

I've experienced Michigan hatred well before Harbaugh became the coach. I think it's two separate things. I have a few friends who hate Michigan and are careful to keep that in check when they're around me. Colleges are tribal by nature -- we have our colors and our mascots and we battle each other in a variety of venues. Michigan people are loud and proud, and tout how good our university is in other ways. We love our school and that's annoying to other people who don't have that same relationship with their schools. And we know that we're good, which is super annoying to other people.

I've lived half my life in Ohio and maybe the intensity of that has desensitized me, but when I'm in neutral territory I don't experience what you're describing. I was in Minnesota late in the 2021 season and a total stranger in Menards saw my shirt and said "Man, I love the way you guys play football!!"

The only place I've ever gotten any of what you're saying is from MSU fans when I'm in Michigan. Especially if they find out I didn't even go to Michigan; it's hard to know how to respond to the sneer they give me.

But on neutral ground it's usually either respect or friendly rivalry. The media bullying of the last few weeks is something new.

Ohio's a different beast altogether; I've probably got at least a dozen of those irrational loathers that didn't go to OSU (or anywhere for that matter) in my own family. It's going to be an interesting Christmas.

But the other B10 schools, I haven't experienced. My last work group in Chicago was basically made up of one or two people from each of the old conference schools (MN the only miss). Plus a domer,, and two of us were from high-end LACs. Monday mornings wound up being football debriefings. Friendly rivals, everybody respectful, everybody proud of where they went. It's not like any of these are bad schools. Boss of one of our sister companies had played defense for Woody--it was a joy to talk football with him. Total respect for the rivalry; sort of reminds me of BuckeyeChuck I suppose.

Eh. Much of it is the same reason I hate Alabama and USC, and Duke in basketball. So much winning over the years, so much media attention, and fans who really have no idea what most teams struggle with. We go apoplectic if we go 7-4 two years in a row, whereas for most teams in the country going 7-4 two seasons in a row would be remarkable.

And some of it is that Harbaugh is, frankly, a kind of weird guy. He's not charming, he doesn't show up on PTI or do good ole' boy shtick, and he's burned bridges at every other team he's worked with, despite winning. He's definitely an acquired taste. But he's one of ours: See also, Rodman, Dennis, and Laimbeer, Bill.

Finally, there's our own myopia, so all the stories we see about Michigan seem incredibly unfair, but stories about other programs we shrug about and forget. (Obviously right now we're in the center of the media firestorm, but not always). I live outside Michigan, and I have a lot of sports friends who are curious about the Signgate story but by no means gleeful about it or obsessed. It's simply not true that "everyone hates us."

It'll pass, my friend. But this is the cost of being one of the top 5 football programs (and, frankly, top 5 overall) in the country. The rest of the country follows you ... but enjoys watching you lose/struggle, the exact same way I enjoy watching Notre Dame lose/struggle. ESPN knows if it can put a news item up about Michigan it'll get clicks, because we're one of the few genuine names in the college football world, that people from all over care about.

The benefits outweigh the negatives, though. Undefeated with two left to go. I'll take it!!

Brady Quinn said something to that effect about Jim - he absolutely does not go out of his way to make friends in the media. He’s hard to work with. Sports journalists are people, and they aren’t going to go out on a limb for a guy that’s a dick to them. Harbaugh is many things, most of them good, but a skilled politician is not one of them.

Part of it with Harbaugh, I think, is that he is not part of the good ole boys coaching club.  He really didn't come up the coaching ranks.  He was never an assistant at Toledo or a position coach at Iowa.  He didn't eat at Waffle House while carrying another coach's bags.  He was a pro-bowl NFL quarterback who briefly was a position coach for the 49ers and then because a head coach in college, where he immediately began kicking butt.  He's not one of them and doesn't act like them, and they don't like him.  And he doesn't care, so they dislike him more fervently.

He calls other coaches and schools out, or at least has in the past. Remember when he was at Stanford, and fired a shot at Michigan for their lax academic standards for athletes? I'm actually surprised he ended up coming back here after that, from both sides. He's an acquired taste and if he's not your coach or on your team, you're not going to take the time to learn how to like that taste.

The fact that this team is embracing the hate is absolutely the right thing to do. Use it as motivation and give the haters the middle finger. Certainly helps that the administration is firmly behind them.

I lived in AL, TX and KS the last 35 years and there's always been an underline hatred for Michigan. More to do with Jealously, since we were one of the big blue blood programs and anything negative that happened to Michigan was something these opposing fans loved to cheer for. I remember, I went to the CMU vs KU game in  '07 and they announced the final score of the AppSt game the crowd at KU went crazy for over 10 minutes. I was wearing my Michigan jersey and cap and the people were shouting F-U Michigan. Now all the KU and KSU fans at work are all fighting me about how big of a cheat we are. I'm sick of explaining everything to them but they just read ESPN and say it is the worse scandal in college football and that the NCAA should give us the death penalty. LOL, you cannot change minds when social media causes the cancel culture effect.

Actual answer: TV sports are an entertainment industry, and virtually everyone involved wants to make money off of it however they can.

Michigan fans are rabid about their football team, and rage is the best way to get engagement. Fans of other schools don't like Michigan because they are fans of other schools, and rage is still the best way to get engagement. If you get most everyone in your audience worked up, it's payday! Support your local mgobloggers, kids.

A lot of people are just ignorant so they just hop on the wagon like the rest of the sheep’s. The comments I see about Michigan and this “scandal” on social media the more I laugh. Will continue to enjoy the show.

On JH specifically, he comes across as somewhat combative and distrustful in interviews and he is always looking for an edge (satellite camps), the yearly flirtation with NFL doesn't help the reputation. He's kinda like Bill Laimbeer was, great at his job and opponents hated him, but would have loved him if he was theirs.

As far as Michigan itself goes, the arrogance is a big part of it and now the defense of all this sign crap is "no big deal, and everybody does it" attitude pisses people off. The media really fuels the fire and CS's elaborate scheme that allegedly involved other conferences and so many teams and was so obvious, turned a lot middle of the road people to hate Michigan.

All of it is so blown out of proportion.

that struck a chord with me. Have you listened to sports talk around here??? you would think we were in Columbus Ohio.

I was raised with fraternal feelings for all the BIG schools, except MSU, no more.  Michigan is hated by the entire conference.  Time to leave and let the haters learn to live without one of the main financial supports of the edifice.

Just Remember the people sounding off in the comments section in The Athletic are self selecting.  It’s a little like the whole”Twitter can’t be mistaken for the real world” thing.  I’ve gotten mild shit pitched at me, but for the most part people either think this is overblown or just don’t care.  The “this is so much different from what other teams do angle.” Is being pushed by OSU hacks like Mandel and Wasserman.
